Updated up to Nittles’ characters. Be back to do some more later. Even though it’s early, it’s interesting to see some of these results, isn’t it? Some things are really not a surprise, other things are. For example, I’m surprised most of the Norns so far are female. I would have thought a big hulking Viking character would have been popular among guys. Shows what I know.

Norn men are weird looking. Their scrawny little legs, tiny heads and oversized arms make them look like cartoon characters. Norn Women, on the other hand, also feature somewhat distorted proportions, but in a way that we’ve been culturally acclimated to find sexy. I suspect that a lot of the guys looking to make a giant awesome looking battle monster gravitate to the Charr, who are allowed to have weird proportions because they’re not otherwise human-looking.

Also, I used to work as a GM for another MMO, and between data mining and outright polling some of our players we were able to paint a very interesting picture of player gender choice. The short version is that female players play male characters about as often as male players play female characters (just over 2/5ths of the time in either case), but often cite very different reasons for doing so. That was a pretty different game though, and the question of gender differences in fantasy races is a pretty huge complication we didn’t have to deal with.

I actually started out with ALL female norns. After a while, they felt slow and plodding and the armors (particularly heavy) look better on the human models. (Skirts flair too much like 1950 poodle skirts.)

Asuras have ended up being a lot of my go-to characters because other than one set of armor, all of the armor on Asuras have good coverage and don’t look indecent. (Subjective preference.)

I’m a female, and Guild Wars 2 is the first game where most of my characters are female, instead of all male. I like female charr in particular, because while they’re clearly women, they weren’t designed to appeal to men. They aren’t sexy—and so they appeal to me as a player who likes gender to be represented with diversity. For my female human, I can give her unsexualized armor, so yay. As for my males—one of them represents a cartoon character, and the other just turned out male. And, as you can see, I like warriors and necromancers XD
