Guild Wars 2

This is a public service announcement regarding necro’d and new threads concerning Dueling and Mounts.

These two topics are “hot button” items that keep re-ocurring every couple of weeks.
In order to prevent any new threads from getting out of hand and shut down (like they all eventually do) please use the search as outlined in the sticky regarding searching the forums.

In whatever search engine you use enter in
site:forum-en.guildwars2.com/forum [dueling] [mounts]

Using either of the tags at the end will bring up tons of results. In almost every thread about these subjects contains the same arguments for and against. There have also been several dev comments to the effect of “It’s not something we are looking at implemeting in the foreseeable future”

So for your sake, and the sake of the community, please do the search before decided whether or not its worth starting a new thread, getting a bunch of people angry, and the thread shut down.

Odd, the only dev comment on dueling that I have seen has been something more like, “it is something we would like to implement,” without much if any indication of timeframe (or solid commitment).

You have anything to support that claim about a dev comment on dueling?

That’s true, there were a couple of comments to that effect, but open world dueling (or PvP in general) is not something they plan on doing afaik. They might introduce some sort of official 1v1 mode in sPvP or maybe even just some sort of practice duel inside the Heart of the Mists staging area, but it’s highly unlikely we’ll ever see something like that in PvE. Nor do most of us want to.

I had the urge to blindly post “No.” with an animated picture of a guy beating a horse after reading the title. Good thing I didn’t. :P

Dueling + Mounts = Jousting!

Something that could easily be ignored while still offering something exciting and fun to the mount, duel, and PVP in PVE folks.

Win/win/win.

I dont really expect dueling at this point either, but the OP claims that the devs have made specific comments about it. I am very curious to see if he has a source or is making it up (for whatever reason).

I suppose that a pro-duel player could make an answering thread claiming that Anet has stated that they very much want to add dueling to the game and will act if enough pro-dueling threads are created. They wouldnt have less support for their claim than the OP provides.

He might, and it would have been helpful to post sources to put some of these arguments to rest, but he might also just have been following the multitude of opened, closed, and deleted threads which would make him informed, even if not exactly the most credible.

Why exactly aren’t people allowed to post new suggestions considering mounts and/or dueling but other kinds of posts like “we want new dungeons”, “we want raids”, etc. come up at least once a week?

I’d love to create a thread to suggest ground-mounts in the new HoT-maps only as a new mastery to travel faster in the mid- and lower biome.

I must remind people that both exist already:

• Dueling
  • With PvE gear in WvW maps. There’s just no way to pick teams, but that could be added in some way in the obsidian Sanctum, allowing people to become hostile to whoever they want by entering several extra teams in the map. Remember the bandit camp in Silverwastes? That event puts you in a different team allied with bandits temporarily.
  • With PvP stats, in several dueling arenas.

• Mounts
  • To change your appearance when you move, get Travel gizmos.
  • To ride things that get different skills and abilities, it depends on the map. Thare’s things like Siege Golems and Siege Mecha Devourers to ride in battle.

They already exist, and that’s the form they take in GW2. The design leaves no room for them in many other ways.

Don’t forget that mounts that should do duelz needs to wear proper capes ^^

I commend you for trying to educate about the history of these topics on the forum, and demonstrating how we can work around the forum’s terrible search feature in order to find those earlier threads.

However, if you did not wish this to become yet another discussion regarding those things, you should not have presumed to speak for the majority by declaring a general consensus.

Without your statement that there is a general consensus, this could have been a post helping to direct people to appropriate threads, rather than starting new ones, and reminding them to keep the conversation civil so as not to get threads locked.

Might just be another surge of fresh players following the recent sale. They play GW2 and struggle with some of the differences they might notice between it and their previous MMO experiences. (i.e. WoW)

We might see these threads every once in a while, but the sheer amount of threads we’ve seen in the past month that basically boil down to “GW2 needs to be more like other MMO’s/World of Warcraft” are just staggering. Something is up.

Or maybe people think that if they re-raise their concerns around the time an expansion is a HoT issue it will be taken more seriously. Of course the opposite is true.

The post was about open world PvP servers. (which can incorporate dueling, even if kept seperate for “normal” PvE servers.) The devs comment CAN be interpreted to encompass any form of open world PvP/Dueling.

I suppose it all how you look at it.

In any event, this is just a heads up to newer players coming in and starting threads about these topics and encouraging them to search before posting yet another thread on the same topic that has been discussed at length. Nothing more.

I am sure your motives are good but by posting a supposed dev quote your thread implies otherwise. It does come across as intended to discourage people from requesting things that devs have supposedly stated are not on the table for the forseeable future. Had you focused just on the search workaround, and perhaps links to existing threads on these topics it would be different.

Has anyone mentioned chariot races? I mean, ya know, even if we don’t have chariots, we still have brooms and flying carpets or whatever. Deck them out with guns and blades, maybe some smokescreen and oil slick add-on contraptions — earned through Chariot Racing Mastery! Is there any other medieval/steampunk/science fantasy MMO out there with chariot races?

The linked thread is a request for adding PvP servers. That is not at all the same as adding dueling as an option.

You made a claim quoting devs as making statements about dueling. Not community managers commenting about creating PvP servers. Can you support that claim?

You say that your goal was not to discourage pro-duel posters but you create a dev quote that gives the impression that the option is off the table.

I would really like to see mounts in game. I hope it will speed up walking.

Understood. I feel that counterpoint to the effort to discourage players with an interest in certain features by attributing negative commentary, that Ive not seen, to devs is important in the context of this subject. Of course if you can find a dev quote that states what you claim I will retract my concern.

until then you are providing unsupported supposed dev quotes for one side of a debate. This creates the impression of an agenda as regards to the debate itself. This could be avoided by sticking to the advice on searching the forums and perhaps linking existing threads.

Honest question here:

How beneficial for the forums do you think it wod be for someone to invent a dev quote claiming that Anet has claimed that they will add open world PvP if enough pro threads are posted ? That poster would be doing essenty what you are, for the pro side of the debate.

I Support the idea of consensual dueling (though I would be unlikely to use such a system) but very much oppose general open world, non-consensual, PvP (which is what is referenced as being avoided in the first link/quote) The two are very different things. They are different on the order of discussing mounts and capes IMO.

Nice. However it still is kind of open ended. “We would like to in the future”. It’s not a yes, we are going to add dueling, and it’s not no, we are not going to add dueling. Its kind of a “it’s not off the table, but sometime in the future.”
