So, I’ve gotten 4 or 5 of the emails in game in the last few days from people pretending to be ANet GM’s (despite the warning message in the mail that clearly show they aren’t).

Most were the usual “Your account will be shut down unless you click on this link” format (again, ignoring that you CAN’T click on a link in game – boy how DUMB are these people?) but today I got a new variant.

Apart from lacking the ANET symbol the excellent use of language and vocab are fun to read sometimes.. only thing that let this mail down was there was no
“Hass a nece Dai” at the end.. fun times

But yeah there has been a marked increase in the last few days of goldsellers and crapmail in game – maybe they know something we don’t???

I got the same mail sent to me. Whats concerning to me is it was sent when I was offline. Hope I am not on some account hacker spam list.

I’ve got to be perfectly honest… That grammar is simply adorable!

Thanks for the update.

The fact that people still fall for these when it explicitly states it’s from a PLAYER and not from Anet themselves leads me to believe that there is no hope left for the human race.

I don’t know if it’s true but I’ve heard some gold sellers will go into a busy area (like the Heart of the Mists or a town) and take a screenshot of a whole load of player names, then target them gradually. Possibly out of the mistaken belief that this game works like GW1 where you could only report people who were still in the same map as you. Possibly so they have time to do things like find account names to make their mail “more authentic”.

Actually they do it so they can create a list ahead of time, and get off as much spam as possible before the account gets banned. Going in and targeting one player at a time, sending off spam that will be reported, is less efficient use of a limited resource.

They have to buy these accounts, so they are naturally going to try and get as much use out of them as they can. (Speaking of the obvious GHJKJHGLHG.90210 spam accounts, though it still holds for hacked accounts, they will want to get as much use as they can before they lose it.)

I think the current uptick is still fallout from that $10 sale a while back. The ‘smarter’ ones likely bought quite a few copies and gave themselves a surplus of accounts.
