Since the Betas, the greatsword has been the best weapon to deal massive damage very fast (I’m thinking of Warriors and also some Guardians).
ArenaNet even released three models of legendary greatswords, whereas there are only one model for each type of weapon.
This proves to me that they focus more on greatswords because that’s what the majority use, just like they focus much more on humans and not fixing Charr armors clipping issues, because female humans are what the majority of players use.

At any rate, how do you want people to try anything other than greatsword since it gives so much damage with low cooldown? Hundred Blades has a 8 seconds cooldown, even 6 seconds with the right trait for more spam. Most warriors in PvE use either greatswords and sometimes axes. Some people do want to try something else, but we obviously cannot because when you compare the damage done, greatsword is always better no matter what in PvE thanks to low cooldowns and huge base damage skills.

As I said, how do you want people to try new builds like people used to in Guild Wars 1 if you give us very few and limited possibilities with weapon-skills and the fact that power based builds works way better than conditions? I thought the game was sold with the “play your way” idea. An idea that makes games like Skyrim work great because whatever you want to play it will be powerful.
Guild Wars 1 gave you the possibility to make the weapon do what you wanted, because you had the freedom to really play as you wished. That is why people played the game from Prophecies to Eye of the North with more than 3.000 hours without huge pauses of more than 3 months. That is in my opinion one of the assets that made Guild Wars 1 really interesting: diversity with balanced skills and the will to improve your own build.

It has been more than one year, and I’m tired of seeing that I cannot try something new with competitive damage since I cannot create a build and select which skills to use from the second to fifth slot.
At least give the weapons the ability to be good when specialized either in conditions or raw damage.

It is indeed dissapointing and frustrating to not do better than the A weapon because you cannot change how some of the skills of the B weapon works.
And the day I will stop seeing in the Looking for Group tab things like 4 full Berserker wars, 1 mesmer, no ranger, will be the day something has really changed in the game in PvE.

Sincerely,

The thing is, p2 CoF is so fast (not p1 speed, but still quick) that those groups wait longer to form a group than a regular balanced party would take to just run the dungeon. :P

Anyway, the answer is not only in reducing the prevalence/impact of Critical Damage (the true culprit), but also adding more meaning and depth to control or support.

I made a post about the snowball effect of critical damage down below.

GSs are indeed favored in the art design team.

As far as balance goes, GSs are easy but I think most good players sort of “graduate” from them and leave them behind. They tend to have some high damage skills (such as Hundred Blades or Maul) that are great to switch to, but only if you can switch back out in a timely manner and get back to your higher DPS weapons.

As far as those groups are concerned, they are just statistically avoiding trouble caused by people with their own level of skill screwing up the much more difficult classes.

[Warrior, Ranger, Ele, Mesmer, Guardian] groups can do those paths really fast, but with PuGs the chances of finding a 70% Frost Spirit ranger and a mesmer who doesn’t wait till 10% HP left on bosses to pop Time Warp are incredibly low.

Except greatsword isn’t the highest dps weapon.....for any class.

Axe/Mace for Warriors
Scepter/Focus for Guardians
Sword/Sword for Mesmers
Sword/Warhorn for Rangers

All better DPS than greatsword.

Sword/Warhorn for Rangers

Sword/Axe :P (Unless you’re pugging and no one is granting fury)

No, it’ Sword/Warhorn. Neither axe skill does more DPS than the sword auto attack, at least the warhorn gives fury and a blast.

Greatswords are awesome but like Peetee has stated they’re not the highest damaging weapon for any class.
I do realize that people feel pressured into using them and I do feel that some other weapons should be buffed ( for PVE) in order to make them more appealing.
Greatswords are fine as they are – but if other weapons were buffed in PVE maybe we’d see a lot more hammers and other things around.

If here they fall they shall live on when ever you cry “For Ascalon!”

It may be a favorite but it is up to the player what he will use and how. I got bored of the GS and not using it for a very long time. I use axe/axe now because i wanted to get away from the sword(1h) now but I used hammer and others too.
