Even though this is a PVP related question, I’m posting here because it’s directed GW2’s biggest population base (hence this forum) and their interest (or not) in PVP (not including WvW). Currently the PVP population seem pretty small and alot of people in that community are wondering how to get more people in and interesting. Wondering how many of you:

1. Have tried PVP? If not, why?
2. Tried it and liked it or not?
3. Are active PVP players?
4. Done both WvW and PVP: which do you prefer and why?

1. Have tried PVP? If not, why? Nope, no interest whatsoever. I spend too many hours of the day at work, stressing this, that, or the other thing. I log on to relax, enjoy myself, download the brain. Enganging in a competitive situation would just destroy that for me altogether (sidenote, same reason I’m not a member of a baseball/football/insert sport here league through the local park districts).
2. Tried it and liked it or not? Haven’t tried it, wouldn’t like it — tried it before in other games when friends were all, you gottttta try this. I did; it didn’t take.
3. Are active PVP players? I am the antithesis of active PvP.
4. Done both WvW and PVP: which do you prefer and why? Done neither, prefer neither, see response number 1.

Not sure why pvpers want more people to play it, smaller communities are better. As long as you can get a game its all good. I play pvp mostly after becoming bored of pve, wvw just doest do it for me, huge empty spaces with huge zergs. Unlike other pvp only games I have the option to pve when I want with same character.

Edit: it also makes you allot better at pve when you dive in, in relation to knowing classes etc

1. Have tried PVP? – Not in Gw2. If not, why? – Because I have played way too much in other games. Too many people entering /rage, too much trash talk outside the realm of healthy competition, too many players that think being good in PvP makes them a great person as a whole, I play to relax and PvP is more annoying than relaxing.

2. Tried it and liked it or not? – Never tried it in GW2 and never will.

3. Are active PVP players? – Nope never will be.

4. Done both WvW and PVP: which do you prefer and why? I’ve done WvW and find it boring. I probably won’t play much more WvW and I simply avoid achievements tied to it. As stated I have not done PvP and won’t so I don’t prefer either.

1. Have tried PVP? If not, why?

No, I have not tried PvP. I do not see the appeal of PvP in this genre of video games.

2. Tried it and liked it or not?

N/A

3. Are active PVP players?

N/A

4. Done both WvW and PVP: which do you prefer and why?

I have tried WvW and it can be fun at times, but suffers from a lot of (in my opinion) poor design choices. The very nature of it makes zergs the only viable strategy and makes your character feel pointless. For this reason, I feel that PvP would likely be more interesting than WvW

I think one of the biggest turn aways of PvP to me is that I cannot take with me the gear I earned in PvE. I have enjoyed PvP only once in this genre, and it was on a MUD that I played a decade ago. I enjoyed the game style where you PvE’d to get your gear and then PvP’d with risk of losing said gear. You could also engage an opponent while they were completing a dungeon as a form of strategy. This made both running dungeons and PvP risky and required a lot of caution, thought and strategy to do well. When you died, your opponent took your hard earned equipment, which meant you had to PvE to get it back again (or try to beat them in PvP while being underpowered with weak gear, this could be offset by being a good player).

If the above MUD-type scenario were introduced, I would be interested in PvP. However, going into PvP with very little risk seems boring to me, and I do not like the massive separation of it from PvE.

2. Tried it and liked it or not?

I like the idea of it. It’s cool for some people. I’m not one of those people.

3. Are active PVP players?

Not active in PvP. Active in PvE.

4. Done both WvW and PVP: which do you prefer and why?

Definitely prefer WvW. That I do on occasion. Just a lot better than straight PvP for a ton of reasons.

Yes
2. Tried it and liked it or not?
Haven’t played it since release, and only played a few hours. I have over 2300 hours in this game.

I do not like it because the success of your team largely has to do with the team and the individual. And more often than not, failures by just one person on your team can put you at a serious disadvantage. Not to mention the players who leave immediately, making the match one-sided. I don’t consider this fun.

3. Are active PVP players?

4. Done both WvW and PVP: which do you prefer and why?
I’ve played a lot of WvW and I like it because there is still room to play as a zerg, as a party or go solo. Even if your server is mediocre, you still have stuff to defend and take, like yaks, sentries and camps.

I’ve tried sPVP, WvWvW, and the themed PVP fights like Dragon Ball and this new Aspect Arena.
2. Tried it and liked it or not?
Bored of sPVP, I hate WvWvW because it is mandatory for world completion plus the armor repairs (seriously?! Remove it!), I actually enjoy the themed PVP games.
3. Are active PVP players?
Nope, I’m active PVE and apparently plan to stay that way.

If I’m only given the choice of those two then neither. Both are frustrating or just not worth my time.

I try on a weekly basis to do a bit of everything available in game so GW2 stays somewhat interesting for me so I do not burnout. In past games I was very big into PvP, was not great at it by any means but still found it very fun and was able to consistantly improve my gameplay. Gw2’s PvP for me for some reason is missing that “It” factor that would hook me in and get me addicted.

1. Have tried PVP? If not, why?
Yes! Mostly WvW, but I do a few hotjoins every night to mix things up.

2. Tried it and liked it or not?
I am in the middle here, I do a lot of WvW, but after a night or 2 in the zergball I get very bored! So then I roam for another night or 2 only to find myself victim to the zergball far to often so I get a bit bored of that, than I move on to Spvp and it all becomes fun again for a night or 2, then I get my confidence up to do some Tpvp only to have it ruined by far to many whiny players who complain about anything and everything.

3. Are active PVP players?
Somewhat, would like to be more active

4. Done both WvW and PVP: which do you prefer and why?
Done both as stated above and if I had to pick between the 2 I have to go with WvW, the community in WvW is just miles ahead, much more friendly and fun to be around.

4. Done both WvW and PVP: which do you prefer and why?

1. Yes

2. A bit of both. I like having smaller engagements (1v1, 1v2, 2v2, etc). No skill lag and the different objectives (secondaries → Spirit Watch orb and such). What I don’t like is the lack of rewards (both for PvE an PvP). You can’t get a lot of gold or anything playing PvP and on top of that the progression in PvP is very slow where you have to be a hardcore PvP player to progress to a higher level in a short period of time. As a casual player you’ll be at the same rank for a long period of time. Lastly, the lack of different stat sets in PvP. I know it is for balance but it would be nice to get a variety of stats that you can use to build your profession in PvP.

3. Somewhat, I try to PvP for a few days per week.

4. I like them both. However, I would WvW more since the rewards are better (e.g. going towards legendaries) and the progression is faster. WvW wxp is easy to acquire so you can progress levels and get upgrades versus PvP where the rank progress is slow. Finally, WvW I can use a wide variety of stat sets and this is fun since I can theorycraft and build my professions in a variety of ways.

I like it when the two teams are relatively balanced and people have enough skill to work together and assist each other rather than when individuals play selfishly.

3. Are active PVP players?
I do my PvP daily for the achievement points and if I find myself in a match with team player types I might stick around for another couple of matches.

4. Done both WvW and PVP: which do you prefer and why?
I prefer WvW because I’m a team player. I enjoy representing my server and the camaraderie that comes from fighting a protracted battle. Also, rewards I receive in WvW can help me in other parts of the game while PvP rewards are for skins which don’t interest me.

well, i play spvp once or twice a week (sometimes none), got to rank 30 and i never even tried ranked tourney. I like pvp as much as i like pve but the fact that i can’t use my pve stuff in pvp kills it for me, plus the only game mode available is one of the most boring game modes i’ve played in recent years. How can people play spvp for longer than ~2h at a time is a mystery, while i could play 10h straight in gw1’s pvp np

I detest WvWvW, I feel like I am slaying wounded animals. The people that hang around WvWvW are the type that lose a 1v1 after popping thieves guild and ambush trap.

I can’t stand people who gank, let alone poorly play at the same time. Killing enemies in WvWvW is a complete joke and it’s just simply not for me.

I have tried both. I like WvW and play there regularly, but I didn’t wildly enjoy sPvP as I am not very familiar with ‘twitch’ style games (not into Call of Duty and such) and 1 on 1 pvp isn’t my favourite thing. I end up finding it too pressured to have fun with it, and I prefer things without such short, fast-paced time limits.

Tried it and still do it on the odd occasion. When I do play sPvP I generally cycle through each map once and by that time I’ve become bored of it and go back to WvE and PvE. Why don’t I like it?

  • It’s all too much of the same.
  • It’s only conquest or conquest with a slightly different gimmick.
  • It’s always the same professions and builds.
  • It has no impact on anything outside of sPvP (and I don’t really want it to either)

I “dabble” in WvW, and I have been in sPvP a few times.

I don’t hate either one, but sPvP is a bit fast-paced for my tastes.

WvW is a lot of fun as long as I work “in the background” and don’t run with the zerg. Sadly it’s come to the point that I turn off map/team chat because all I see is people who are wearing the commander tag order everyone around to places that are strategically less important than where they “should” be… Tactics and actual “warfare” are lost in the “Follow the toon with the blue marker” frenzy.

Case in point: I was in EB the other day and spent my entire time building trebs and carts to protect a part of Stonemist that was empty except for the NPCs and groups of enemy combatants that insisted upon hammering our walls. There were maybe 2 or 3 other players there with me, and we defended it until we couldn’t stay any longer. I think I got 8 or 9 kills that day, when the other guys got too close to my epic sense of targeting (jk…I think it was accidental)

What did the “commander” say to us? he/she said “Stop building stuff… You’re wasting supply,” as he/she ran by with about 200 people following. (By the way, they completely bypassed the group that was battering Stonemist in favor of a smaller camp with no supply value.)

I hate to say it, but…it would be better if the Commander tag couldn’t be bought, and had to be earned. Yes, there are some truly capable people out there, and I have seen them, but unfortunately, there’s a lot of them that simply want to wave their kittens and stroke their egos.

I like WvW. I would like it a lot better if it didn’t already turn into the zerg vs zerg mentality.

So, until te team over at ANet makes it so that there are actual objectives that don’t involve winning by sheer masses, I will probably spend most of my time in PvE.

1. Have tried PVP? If not, why?

Yes, both sPvP and WvW.. though very, very little of the former and more of the later.

2. Tried it and liked it or not?

When I first tried sPvP it was at the beginning of the game so of course didn’t know my class well. I think I tried 3 matches and found it frustrating. I recently went in again and had a much better time.. actually found myself doing quite well. So, I think it’s alright. I find it hard to fit into my pve activities and also find myself always scared of going back in as I’m afraid of being horrible (I know.. it’s silly :P.) Being killed repeatedly isn’t so fun. :P

WvW, it’s alright too, but I absolutely hate the armor repair cost. I also don’t like big zergs and nor does my PC. The few times I’ve managed to find some smaller skirmishing, it was much, much more enjoyable.

3. Are active PVP players?

n/a

4. Done both WvW and PVP: which do you prefer and why?

I think I’d have to go with sPvP as there’s no consequences on my wallet if I die, it’s very easy to respec and play with builds, I don’t get lag so can see what my opponent is doing and it’s more small scale.

I just wish it was possible to hot join with friends. That’s one of the reasons why my boyfriend didn’t want to keep playing this game as we couldn’t pvp together. I’m not about to go do tournaments as I’m still a noob. I also think they could use different scenarios like capture the flag, or hold on to a certain item as long as you can (I’m thinking about some of Rift’s pvp I did.)

1. Yes played a fair amount of GW2 PvP.

2. I personally like the conquest model with some strategy/tactics mixed in. Needs more/different modes however. Needs a much better matchmaking system.

3. No, not active in sPvP for some time (I play 2-4 hrs WvW most days), not even tried that new PvP map. No rewards at all for doing sPvP, so something else always wins the battle for my playing time.

4. I prefer WvW by a HUGE, HUGE margin…its far more dynamic, vastly more strategy and tactics involved. Battles in WvW are memorable and you feel like a true hero on occasion. Its also just about rewarding enough for you not to be concerned that you might be missing out by not doing PvE. WvW guilds are huge, some are 500 players strong and you have a great time playing together in WvW. Honestly, I don’t know of 1 sPvP guild…

I have. It was ok. I play a lot of CoD and stuff like Last of Us multiplayer already though and those games do PvP much more interestingly… and I have them if I feel like doing PvP. There is just no point to GW2 PvP and none of my friends do it either so I have no reason to do it myself even for fun.

I do like WvW though, even if I do it infrequently. Its as pointless as PvP but its long-term, dynamic, and the PvE bonuses make me feel like Im contributing to my server.

My issue with sPvP is that they went too esport and segregated it from the rest of the game too much. If there were PvE rewards or PvE experience for doing it then I would probably at least play casually. Or like you know, having GUILD WARS back like GW1.

1. Have tried PVP? If not, why?

I haven’t tried PVP yet on the game, in part because I find it a bit confusing? I’m new to MMOs I suppose with GW1 being a CoRPG. I used to do things like Fort Aspenwood and JQ and Alliance Battles. They felt structured to me, and I knew what I had to do. I also appreciated the meta builds on PVX. I would play those for some thoughtless fun. I don’t understand how the PVP here works.. nooby as that may sound.

1. Yes
2. It’s okay.
3. Not really.
4. WvW. Mostly because in PvP, it’s a bunch of no-name players randomized to where you’ll end up raging because of a few people being idiots destroying your entire team’s chances of winning. In WvW, you need a LARGE group of idiots to pull that off, plus it’s nice that I don’t need to be with the main force to pull something off there. Not to mention the community is 100x better and doesn’t immediately call for nerfs on things just because they died to something once.

1. Have tried PVP? If not, why?

Yes, but only in the past few days (played PvE since pre-launch). Why? To earn enough glory to get a PvP salvage kit to clean out my inventory of AP chest PvP skin duplicates.

2. Tried it and liked it or not?

Night 1: Tons of trash talk, lack of organization. Good amount of success but feeling like it was holding back my “wealth” progression time in PvE
Night 2: Late at night (west coast)). Less trash talk (still some), much higher calibre of players. At the end of the run, I went back to my PvE “AP maximization” project and realized that there is a great -consistent- AP/hr ratio.
Morning after Night 2: Starting to pull together a group of friends to play it.

3. Are active PVP players?

Looks like I might be!

4. Done both WvW and PVP: which do you prefer and why?

My second attempt at PvP came right after my first experience as an invited member to a 360+ member guild’s organized WvW session.

It felt more like a Hack-a-thon than anything else, and the leadership was very one dimensional (standing around at a gate, trying to get in, until the enemy got themselves together and flooded a huge army into the area, decimating us, while at the same time sending another large army in to take back the keep we acquired shortly before that). It took half an hour to get the group organized for an hour of play before I was disenchanted.

My main takeaway:

PvP is a great opportunity because, at the introductory level, it doesn’t require anywhere near the time investment of PvE or PvP. It’s what makes games like Unreal Tournament (wayyy back!) such a huge hit – easy to get in, easy to put down. You don’t feel the pressure of a large time commitment, like with a (non CoF!) dungeon run.

… and back to those Achievement Points..

2. Tried it and liked it or not?
3. Are active PVP players?
4. Done both WvW and PVP: which do you prefer and why?

1. I will not participate in PvP in this game for as long as I play it. Until the general gamer attitude regarding competitive play seriously changes in online gaming, I have no interest in involving myself with others in such a way.

4. I do play WvW. For starters, it offers a more diverse array of actual scenarios than PvP and it gives more freedom of stat selection than the garbage amulet and jewel that PvP provides. Secondly, my enemies are anonymous until I elect otherwise – this minimizes rude behavior from my opponent. Oh, and just to smash the hornet’s nest, WvW involves just as much player skill as PvP while also incorporating an aspect of leadership.

Sil, why would that open a hornets’ nest? I agree completely.. WvW needs command and control over a huge army of independent people who (for the most part) have no willingness to follow orders.

I’m a PvE player who tried both WvWvW and sPvP.

What I dislike about WvW is that it’s only really enjoyable when I can play it for 1+ hour straight or so. It usually takes me a while to find a spot to do something, and by the time I find one and arrive there (and hoping there’s still a battle going on) it’s already 30 minutes later.

The sPvP is fairly enjoyable (coming from a PvE player), but competitive play just isn’t my thing.

Just who the hell do you think I am!?

I’ve seen a couple of threads before where people argued back and forth over the subject, haha. Agreed on what you’re saying though – it seems to be a test of a person’s charisma to get those individuals to cooperate in one direction. It’s pretty cool to see in action.

I agree about it being based on charisma and competency. In fact I’m starting to agree with the camps out there that believe the commander’s tag shouldn’t be bought, but earned.

Elona, Land of the Golden Sun….and undead…and poison. The travel brochure lied okay?!
