PvP is the focus of this game. Always has been.

Um, no, a game can’t be said to be PVP focused when PVP is tucked away in its own zones, out of the way.

At the absolute most you can argue PVP and PVE are equal, though you’d be hard to show that the majority of layers ever PVP.

Focus of the game… not what the players chose to do. The game design has a large emphasis on PvP from WvW to sPvP with every patch bringing more class “balances.” Anet advertised and still seems to seek to make this game the PvP king GW1 once was. Again not saying they are right or it should be done this way. Just that it is being done this way.

In my experience more players participate in one of the forms of PvP, than players have participated in all the dungeons. One persons experience so not worth much, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if over half the GW population participates in PvP. That also may be what Anet is looking at when considering PvP or PvE balance changes.

i could delude you but i doubt that PvP gets near 10% of game population (possibly more near to 2%).

And www being broken as PvE has still lower numbers than PvE.

Dungeon are way more popular than people (i would say PvP/www players) thinks

They can get 50% of pve players attend pvp only losing 96% of their total playerbase, thing that i suspect is slow happening….

P.S. even if www get some number if they already look into hours played even WWW is no match for PvE.
Unless something changed last months but i doubt it

GW2 balance:
A PvE player is supposed to avoid a 1-2 second 1 shotting aoe.
A WWW player is considered uncapable of avoiding a 5,75 second aoe for half his health.

Like I said in my experience. I play a lot of fractals and run some CoF but I haven’t even been in all the dungeons let alone completed all the paths, same goes for the circle of people I play with. WvW seems pretty full to me, more full than many PvE zones so that’s the conclusion I came to based on that. But again just what one guy sees proves nothing.

No, my assessment of the game is PvP focused is completely from the patches/direction the Devs seem to push the classes in every single update.

Unparalleled means having no equal just like your quoted definition says. Being the complete worst means you have no equal, being the complete best means you have no equal they are both unparalleled.

Unparalleled does not mean best. Something can be exceptionally bad, or incomparably horrid, they are not necessarily good terms, he was right. Though you could assume Anet did mean it in a positive light.

Not sure if English is your first language but unparalled is synonymous to best. It’s not used as a neutral “no equal” definition and it does not apply to the other end of the spectrum as you define it to be. It implies “no equal” because by definition it is “the best”.

The problem is that ANet EXPECTS an initial reaction to mesmer and ranger (even boonmaster-eles) …
But they also expect us to kitten soon and find other things to do..

for example: it is STUPID obvious that mesmer sword (blurred frienzy) was nerfed BIG time not because the skill was op… it has been a gd skill to use only bcos it’s similar cooldown with leap…
No. they nerfed the hell out of sword mechanic ONLY to “advertise” and market their new cutie-pie of a piece of kitten of scepter because some developers got a frontal wedgie from his poor excuse of a new condition…

With all due respect arenanet… I’ve been working on leveling my mesmer for a month now, it’s been my baby, i spent almost all my money on exotic gear and weapons not even a week ago… and now? all worthless. you literally KILLED the race. it does NOT promote new builds, in fact, your ruined most viable builds, especially with illusionist celerity becoming trait25….

I’m boycotting playing mesmer or ranger. If you players have ANY shred of dignity and respect to your OWN CREATION… you would do the same.

Sorry arena net… but my mesmer is NOT yours. it’s mine. I leveled it, i fought with it, i spent weeks baby-ing it… you don’t have the right to just kill the profession simply because of your sorry excuse for PvP tests…

Get your best developers and have them meet us in WvW on their new mesmers… if they survive the onslaught, i’ll rest my case.

Lol @ PVP is the focus of the game. It may be ANET’s focus, but certainly not the player base. It’s funny, a very vocal minority cries and cries and anet responds while fully ignoring 80-90% of the playerbase. It’s like they don’t even understand the game they created. Or maybe more correctly, they sold one game, but are now trying to make another.

If you want to look at a game where PVP is really the focus, look at the battlefield series.

PvE is always the biggest focus for the game. That’s how they marketed it as. And that’s where the majority of the player base is.

this thread on patch balance has basically devolved into an axe/axe ranger and the notorious anet-defender both trying to tell the entire ranger community the nerfs weren’t bad because it didnt personally effect them.

Personally, I like how the biggest balance patch of all time blatantly ignored every glaring shortcoming of every class, and instead made some random “turn-the-knob” tweaks. And I like it in the cynical, no-faith-in-the-direction-of-the-game kind of way. Camelot Unchained, hurry the heck up.

When people say PvP, a lot of times they are including WvW. I find it hard to believe 80-90% of the player base doesn’t wvw or do any type of non-pve game mode, that they just sit around PvE-land running fractals and doing events. I know they dont, because almost none of the events on any server are ever past stage 1. I think a more likely split, is that 35% of the players arent 80, 35% of the players are level 80 and wvw, 10% only PvP and 20% are 80 and only PvE. At that point, every group is a vocal minority.

I disagree with thief (Edit: build breaking nerfs to all the thief builds i actually use) nerf.
I disagree passionately with Elixer R nerf.
I disagree with changes to warrior. (I won’t state how)
Edit: I’m beyond caring for my ranger, it has been dead for six months.

My remaining goodwill is gone. I’m heading to Rift.

Edit: I am thoroughly insulted that they gave a hp buff to mesmers’ clones and phantasms (which i don’t agree with, despite leveling mesmer to 80 twice and putting many hours of WvW and a bit of sPvP on it), and not touching Engineer’s Turrets.

No more non cosmetic world event rewards. We haven’t forgotten the Ancient Karka.

This sounds more like the numbers I see daily. The Idea that only 10% of people PvP sounds wrong when nearly every zone is empty but WvW is always full (on my server).

Warrior’s Burst Mastery trait is now bugged with the changes to Discipline. It doesn’t reduce cooldowns whatsoever on burst skills (maybe due to it not stacking with the changes to Discipline?), which essentially reverts it to its old functionality. Eagerly awaiting a fix.

This is not a bug. This is ‘a change missing from the patch notes’. Look at the description of Burst Mastery again.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/index.php?title=Burst_Mastery&diff=prev&oldid=610295

The burst damage from Discipline and faster recharge from Burst Mastery swapped places.
The effect of the change is that with Burst Mastery trait Burst does +10% which is up from +3%. Burst recharge rate went from 20% faster to 30% faster.

That’s it.

I’m not saying Anet should have done it or shouldn’t have done it. I’m saying these changes aren’t affecting my game significantly enough for me to notice..

No, thats not it. You are not merely defending your playstyle, you are telling people that they are wrong about their perception of how the changes affect their playstyle

I’m saying that rangers aren’t as broken as people say they are.

If you had restricted your comments to something on the order of ,“these don’t really affect me,” then you would not have received the same sort of reaction as when you decided to tell others how the changes affected them.

He’s probably referring to the fact that all of the balance patches are based solely upon pvp results, and these fixes for pvp have completely removed a bunch of pve builds from the game.

Anecdotes are fun are they not?

When you look at player populations across game modes, you have to take a few factors into account. WvW is comprised of only three maps and one instance. PvE has 31 explorable areas, eight dungeon instances, fractals of the mists, and more personal story instances than I care to count. Population density in a given game mode may also depend on which server you’re on. A server more focused on WvW may have a higher WvW population than PvE population.

I would argue, across all servers, the average player population is higher in PvE than in WvW or SPvP.

They’re called RANGERS for a reason they fight at range.

Actually that’s not what Ranger means.

Actually, yes it is. Let’s take a look at what it says under character creation, shall we?

“Rangers are proficient with the bow. They rely on a keen eye, a steady hand, and the power of nature to slay their targets. Their loyal pets, which rangers tame and train, distract enemies while the rangers strike safely from a distance.”

They can use both types of bows. That looks like proficiency to me. They can summon nature spirits. That looks true as well. And they do in fact tame pets. So what part of that description is it that you have a problem with?

PvE is always the biggest focus for the game. That’s how they marketed it as. And that’s where the majority of the player base is.

Of course sPvP has been a major focus, they’re obsessed with making it an esport. The majority of balance changes through the life of the game have been for sPvP. And the stupid thing is they deliberately made the game so that sPvP balance is entirely separate from Pve/WvW yet now they don’t want balance that is too different because its too confusing.

So you get balance changes like the ranger nerf that are made only because of 1 particular build in sPvP but they affect the whole class, instead of looking for a more nuanced solution that would affect that build only. Absolutely ridiculous stuff.

You cannot argue that pet nerfs work when they were supposed to patch all skills (including those of pets like turrets, summons and creatures) separating the behavior of PVP PVE and WvW because it clearly states it was a nerf across the board.

The nerfs to pets on the rangers is the equivalent to the nerfs felt by the engineers in three sections before the shift to the separation of behaviors, on condition damage back in September, grenade nerfs multiple times, and nerfs to the speed of pistols that both thieves and engineers suffered along the way. It is to say these were essential to the DPS in any setting in PVE and nerfing them just made a poorly designed class even worse.

It was bad enough before with the lack of prestige the extremely slow shots and the lack of damage for anything other then AOE (anyone can see that only certain weapons are useful for that 1 AOE compared to other classes) the problem is this, they have 1 class that takes the cake on everything and this nerf to pets pretty much reinforces what many people were saying just after launch, that they’d might as well name this game Guild Warriors 2 for all the good any other class is worth compared to the same weapons the warriors use.

Warrior Rifles outdo Engis, Warrior longbows outdo rangers, Warrior long swords outdo guardians the list goes on. If it weren’t for condition damage on some of these classes there would be no choices at all and even that’s nerfed or controlled unjustly with a broken stack system all to save on resources but not allow for any augmentation of condition damage in condition builds save the norm or the new torment. Even the new engineer shots trait doesn’t work well. I and others tried it. Head on over to their forums you’ll see what I mean. It’s simply not well balanced and it’s only for two weapons most of which most don’t use because we’re usually using a kit or two even in heavy turret builds it doesn’t work well.

PVE balance in this game is a joke it really is, their focus was always esports trumps everything. PVE was dungeons and even that has forced people into running Zerker only and only certain classes because their damage is highly imbalanced compared to the three weaker classes. It’s sad eventually they’ll see what they are doing but then it just might be too late.

WvW servers can only hold 70-80 people per map side before a queue starts up. Assuming all three BL’s and EB are queued for a particular server, that is only 280-320 people max. That would have to be one dead server for the WvW population to ever ever outnumber the people in the overworld/dungeons.
