I was out chatting on “map” when someone said “oh joy! another chest (sarcasm)”

Well, I responded with my honest problem:

“I wish I had a chest! I’m sick of getting so many keys!”

and apparently, it’s usually the other way around to everyone basically going O.o at me

I began playing this game about two weeks ago and here is my count:

-10 keys
-2 chests

At one point, it was 9 keys and 0 chests.

I would actually get a key and go “man, when am I gonna get a chest?!?!?!”

So it really is strange that I’m currently more excited for chests than keys? :L

Are you talking about Black Lion Chests? You can buy those on the trading post for 2 copper.

yes it is really strange. chests are worth a couple of coppers each. a pack of keys would cost several gold

When you first start playing, there are a few set content that give BLK by default. Once you have been playing for a fair while, like me, your ratio of chests to keys is going to be around 200 chests per key.

How many alts have you rolled in those two weeks? Some starter stuff drops keys at certain points. You can buy the locked chests on the cheap from the TP if you are looking for some to use your keys on.

I’m on five alts, to be eight soon.

there some goodies you can get from them… but a lot of the stuff are junk to me

There are many things you can get from the chests. A lot of them are not really mind blowing but can be useful like items that give XP buffs. There are some items that can be even more useful like total make over kits, and there are other fun items like minis and mystery tonics. The buffs and and things like Trading Post express seem to be the most common items. Also sometimes they drop more keys. I had this happen a lot where I will open 5 chests and get 3 more keys so I buy 3 more chests from the TP and maybe get one more key.

I feel like this is your problem.

I havent done the trading post yet, so wasnt too much of a thrill for me.

The buffs I’m already getting from achievement chests.

A mini though, yeah, that would have been sweet and I really did think I’d get one.

I had like 300 chests and 4 keys.

I now have 296 chests 0 keys and a golden ticket …

oh and a new character slot……..must have more keys LOL

Are those keys from drops? Or personal story / zone completion rewards?

I’ve heard it rumoured that keys can drop from mobs.. but playing since release, ballpark of 100 chests, still never seen a key drop.

But as has already been said.. just buy chests on the trading post for a few copper each.

keys do drop from mobs but they are rarer than exotics

I’ve had two keys drop from mobs since beta…

Be nice if we could chuck a stack of a few hundred chests into the forge and get a key! I’ve got to the stage I just trash chests now, don’t even bother with the market any more.

Ive had maybe one key off a random drop since launch, over 1000 hours in. I have over 160 chests. Ive purchased maybe 10 keys off the gem store, and received maybe two or three from map completions and from opening chests themselves.

Lol I wish I had your issue. I have close to a stack of BL chests in storage, and in my 10 months of playing, I may have gotten about a dozen keys (not including the 5 I bought waaaaaay back at the beginning).

150 chest sitting in my bank at this very moment. All drops. The only time I get keys is from something like zone completion or story. I think in the past 5 months I’ve had maybe 2 keys drop for me. The early months (pre Nov) keys seemed to drop almost as much as chest.

The only time I gave in and bought some keys were for the fused weapon set. 40 keys and noooooooooo ticket. My luck is terrible in this game. RNG has a hit out on me. The bounty is so large Guilds are going to start targeting me during their missions.

Curious to calculate how many of my keys have been drops of mobs.

5 alts, all past level 10, and done personal story up until then, so I guess that guaranteed me 5 keys?

I have completed zones too – so maybe 1 or 2 there.

I guess true drops for me is somewhere around 2-4 keys in the past 2 weeks, and 2 chests.

Which, I see, is still better than most people.

Will you also get upset if I tell how many celestial recipes I can’t use have also dropped for me?

Thats why I don’t mess with RNG boxes. :D
