There was a thread on this topic by another person before, and for some reason it seems to have been deleted, so I’ll make a new one to keep the discussion going (I’m very interested in the idea myself).

It’d be a very welcome change if the Gem-store skins could be perma-use, for example, by having them available in a similar fashion to the achievement Zenith and Radiant/Hellfire skins.

Their system with the Transmutation charges is a great system, but not great for Gem-bought skins. It’s a wonderful idea for the normal armors and weapons, but for Gem-Store items, it’s basically saying you need to pay twice to get a decent use out of the Gem Skins.

I know that you can get Transmutation charges from sources other than the Gem Store, but why should I have to work more after I buy the skin to use it?

This is a free to play game. Buy once, play forever. They need to generate revenue somewhere. I personally feel the transmutation charges are fine, and I only have 26 myself.

I really have no argument other than that to be honest though. I’d welcome being able to use my Gem-store armors for free like my HoM armors and Achievement armors or outfits, but at the same time, I’m perfectly fine with system.

While I agree with what your saying, what we have to remember is that you can buy gems with ingame gold. So people could get these for “free” and ANet sees no money from this. The way it is now there is a chance ANet may see money come in from one of the two items. And I think that’s the resin it is set up this way.

The way I look at it is this; I pre-ordered the Digital Delux version of the game. If I where to have bought it now, I would have got what I have now, (minus the pre-order ring,) and a Suit of Legacy Armor, Mithril Box, 10 Experience Boosters for the same price, or cheaper if I got it on sale.(in truth I can’t remember how much it was at launch) But I don’t exspect ANet to give me those Items. It would be nice don’t get me wrong, who dosnt like free stuff, but to exspect them to add those things even though I bought the same thing from there own store is a little much. The same as saying that people who use gold to buy gems should get the same be benefits from items that people used cash to buy is a little off for me. It probably balances out, there will always be people who spend what most people consider crazy amounts of money on ingame percheses(I play an App game on my phone and know a guy who in the 2 years the games been out has spend enough money on it to buy a top end Bugatti moter bike. Crazy I know. At one point he even gave me $500 dollers worth of ingame items) but where do you draw the line on what ou can get for “free” and not upset your cash paying customers.

The one I’m talking about was deleted, it was talking about how the guy’s wife liked to change her skins every week and how he thought it was wrong to “double-pay”

I’m not saying they should remove the charges. I like the system too, just not for Gem-bought skins.

While I agree with what your saying, what we have to remember is that you can buy gems with ingame gold.

Have you looked at the exchange rate since just after launch?

Yes, it’s theoretically possible. No, I don’t think there are very many people who actually do this, and if they do it’s unlikely they’d have the cash to do it again for the next skin. For that matter I don’t think there are a lot of people out there who’d consider it worth the cost in terms of both time/gold. (It’s what, 100g for 800 gems now?) Even the handful of people who are crazy enough to go after multiple pricey skins like T3 cultural might object to that eventually.

No matter how you put it, the current system essentially asks you to pay to unlock a skin, and then pay again for using it. I personally have something like 100 charges so am in no danger of having to buy them any time soon but I do object to the principle of paying twice for something.

I understand that ANet needs revenue to keep going. I’m happy to donate by means of a real money gem store purchase or two (or however many I’ve done since launch), even if I’d prefer an expansion over a dress. I don’t mind beying tempted by the occasional new, gem store exclusive skin. It supports a game that I enjot playing.

I do mind being treated as a stupid cash cow, and that is what this system is.

I don’t expect unlimited use of all skins I unlock, but the ones I unlock with real money? Heck yes I want unlimited access to those.

And as I said in my post. It set up this way to if someone buys the skin using Gems ANet might see them buy the charges. If you have lots of time Gold comes easy. The conversion market dips and peeks. It’s high at the moment because of the sale. A few weeks back you could convert 7-8g for 100 gems. 100g is easy to make. Do your dailies/monthly at the end of the month use the laruals to buy T6 mat bags. Sell what you get on the TP. Depending on what you get you can make around 100g just by doing that. Add in key farming and your looking at between -70-100g per skin. So if you have the time and buy gems when the rate is low things on the store are quite affordable using only gold. I’ve made around 400-500g in the last 2 months doing the above.

Out of that I got;
Commanders tomb
Zepherite rescue pack
10 BLK’s
4 minis that cost around 5g each
Cooking mats to level cooking on an alt to max.

If I had know the sale was coming I would have saved the gems. Normally I buy gems, but dew to going on holiday the weekend I can’t spear the money to buy the items I want. But then I’m sure they’ll pop up again, and if I don’t have the gold I’m sure I can spend the money next time.

“If you have lots of time…”

Not everyone does. A lot of us have families, education, careers and other things to do as well. Should we just continue forking over lots of cash just to compensate for the fact that we don’t have all day to play/farm the ridiculous amounts of gold it takes to get a few gems these days? That defeats the purpose, and design philosophy, of the game: fun.

Basically all this statement says is that people who can’t, or won’t, spend all day in game deserve to be cash cows when they are clearly already are spending more real money on the game than you do.

That fallacy is so bent that it actually proves the point I made.

Simple truth: some players having a lot of time to farm does not justify others having to pay again for something they already paid for.

Nobody minds spending the occasional cash in the shop on something new if they can. It supports a game they love. People do mind paying for the same thing over and over. I’m actually less inclined to buy new skins from the Gem Store this way than I otherwise would be. Let the charges be for skins you loot, craft etc., just not for what you pay for. It would be a lot fairer.
