Guild Wars 2

Q: Does anyone know if you will progress in the story if you are on the same chapter as a friend like the current living world for Personal Stories? (Friends asking never tried it before)

If both players are in the same Personal Story step and you do it in a party, 1 of you will get a message in the end of the instance asking if you want it to count towards the progression.

but then if you haven chosen the exact same background your friend wont be able to do their arc they will be stuck with yours untill the end

untill you get to the next part of the story its divided up in 3 parts you/ a group/ someone else
