Personal Story Restoration update
The entire instance, including this part, will be soloable. You will only have to step on one plate to open the gate.
Awesome, thanks!
I’ve been attempting to solo Arah story for about an hour now and I cannot get past the first door.
Every time I stand on the switch the progress bar goes up by about 5% and then goes back down; I’ve tried standing on the switch, emoting, and jumping and nothing seems to work.
Is there something I’m missing or is the instance 2+ people?

Yes, as per the original post(s), the fix won’t happen for at least 8 weeks? Perhaps, not until the launch of HoT?
Good luck.
Edit: Here is the quote:
Q: How long do I have to advance my character’s story past “The Source of Orr”?
A: While we haven’t set a release date at this time, we can confirm that you will have at least 8 weeks from the time of this posting to complete “The Source of Orr”, should you want to advance to step 1 of chapter 8, “Temple of the Forgotten God.” Otherwise, as stated above, you may miss out on much of chapter 8 with this character.

Know what’d also be a nice change to the PS? Make the missions/instances with Lion’s Arch look like the OLD Lion’s Arch. It just makes way more sense. If people ask like “Why isn’t it ruined by Scarlet?” just let them know the PS is meant to take place BEFORE Scarlet. Please, fix this. Having Lion’s Arch look destroyed by Scarlet and then fighting off a Dragon who attacks, it just looks… wrong.
I’d add Fort Concordia too. It seems weird for the Pact to choose a ruined fort that’s full of Mordremoth’s vines and on fire as their first base. Especially since Mordremoth hadn’t woken up then.
But I suspect that’s probably a bit too much work. From the first post (and earlier posts on this) it sounds like the changes are all being made by the writers and voice actors, not people who can change which version of the map is used in the instance.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
F.A.Q.
Q: I’ve never beaten the Personal Story step “Victory or Death” because it required me to play in a group. Are you making any changes to the final fight against Zhaitan?
A: Yes. With this release, we are changing a few things about the final Personal Story step “Victory or Death.” For starters, the instance has been modified to support 1–5 players so you will no longer need a full party to complete it. We have converted the story mode of “The Ruined City of Arah” dungeon to be a Personal Story step, so after this update goes live, you may only play it once as part of your Personal Story. We are also unlocking the explorable mode of this dungeon by default so access will no longer be gated by story mode completion. We are also updating the Ruined City of Arah Dungeon Track to be unlocked by story mode or explorable mode completion. Additionally, the “Master of Arah” achievement is being updated to only require completion of explorable mode paths. Please note that the core gameplay and structure of this story instance has not been changed—the difficulty has been adjusted to allow for solo play and will therefore be more accessible for players.Q: Can I reset my character’s Personal Story progress, or revert my story progress to an earlier state?
A: No. You cannot reset your character’s story progress, either partially or fully.Q: Why can’t I reset my character’s Personal Story progress?
A: The Personal Story was not designed to be replayable. Attempting to adjust a character’s story progress introduces a wide variety of bugs across various content and game systems. We investigated different solutions for partial and full story resets. In all cases, the changes led to unpredictable results in many different content types, including permanent blocking of story progress.Q: If I can’t reset my character’s Personal Story progress, does that mean I can’t play certain parts of the restored Personal Story?
A: That depends on what Personal Story state your character is in when the Personal Story restoration goes live. Consult the scenarios above for more details. Also, all newly created characters will be eligible to play the restored Personal Story in its entirety.Q: How long do I have to advance my character’s story past “The Source of Orr”?
A: While we haven’t set a release date at this time, we can confirm that you will have at least 8 weeks from the time of this posting to complete “The Source of Orr”, should you want to advance to step 1 of chapter 8, “Temple of the Forgotten God.” Otherwise, as stated above, you may miss out on much of chapter 8 with this character.Q: What new voice-over is going into the game?
A: We wanted to update some key lines for several characters in the Personal Story, including those of Trahearne, the Pale Tree, Tonn, and Apatia. In some cases, we are merely re-recording the existing lines to get a more appropriate delivery to match context. In other cases, we are rewriting character dialog to better fit a particular scene.Q: What should I do if I encounter issues after the Personal Story restoration goes live?
A: If you are experiencing any issues regarding the Personal Story restoration content that aren’t listed above, you can contact Customer Service for help.Q: I have more questions about this update. Who can I ask?
A: Feel free to post your Personal Story restoration questions in this thread, and we will do our best to answer them in a timely fashion. You can also consult the Personal Story pages on the official wiki for information about each chapter and story step. We’ll be posting more information closer to release. Thanks for your patience and all of your excellent Personal Story feedback over the past few months.
So what about the other story mode dungeons? It’s relatively hard to find a group for those now because people just farm explorables (hopefully SOMEONE in group has unlocked explorable..), and they’re required for some traits.
I’m glad this is happening. Now (or rather, in a few months or so) I can take my kid into Arah without having to worry about anyone being mean. She’s very excited to hear this!
Thank you!
Pathetic? How? It’s not a matter of “can’t” but a matter of how long it takes to get four other people. You’d find people who would ask on map chat to do the story dungeon with them and most of the time you’d see them refuse or ignore it. Usually it would take me an average of 30-45 minutes to gather people via LFG in case my guildmates aren’t around to join me when compared to the other story dungeons. This way, players can simply don’t have to wait that long anymore.
If you don’t feel like playing PS again, why not just don’t do it? You can still play the game as normal and you can just disable Personal Story if you are aiming for map completion.
Ok, well I just finished chapter 5 “A helping Hand”; the journal says my next mission is “The Battle for Claw Island”. Hopefully this will change to “Greatest Fear” when the update hits, if not. I’m one sad panda. I won’t start the battle for claw island, but I’m still nervous.

I think that’s the only line in all the PS that grates on me so harshly every time I hear it. It’s delivered with an entirely wrong emphasis for the situation.
Actually the Lion Guards shout is done correctly, it’s this way: we sink the bone ship and she cry’s out: “A small victory”…(all the other ships start to surface and she says, “Gods, there’s so many of them”. “A small victory” is a triumphant yell, if rather insignificant, followed by the horror of “Gods, there’s so many of them”. Exactly as it should be. it’s nuanced but it’s correctly done. Now, all of my characters waiting at Victory or Death will finally be able to complete the PS.
Dunno about you but every time I play through this, “Gods, there’s so many of them” shows up before the additional Bone Ships.
This happens a lot in certain cinematics, where things don’t really seem in order or properly timed. Any dialogue featuring one character cutting another off is often seen as character 1 saying an incomplete sentence, three seconds later character 2 starts their sentence that cuts off character 1.
One of the biggest gripes I have in regards to dialogue and story sequence/scripting is one of the norn chapter 3 story steps: Underground Scholar where the dialogue implies that you were present when the dredge show up, rather than showing up just behind the dredge (dialogue implies a situation of you show up, missing dialogue, dredge show up and you head out and then return to see Vyacheslav run away).
Truth be told, there’s a LOT that needs to be done throughout all of the Personal Story, not just the second half. And if amongst such improvements are means to allow the Personal Story to be repeatable… well… -coughs-

You haven’t reached the Greatest Fear part. You misread Bobby Stein’s listed story step The Battle of Fort Trinity for The Battle of Claw Island.
You have 3 story steps you can do before you hit the first “stop before” point – A Light in the Darkness.
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.
Thanks, sorry I thought he was referring the name of the chapter. No need for this Quaggan to give in to the rage.
Can you also revamp the Zhaitan fight? Remove those minions fight and just let us fight Zhaitan.

Just advertise with the LFG tool
The first changes are in A Light in the Darkness which is the last instance of Chapter 6. The Greatest Fear storyline comes after that.
Just clarifying, the last step to chapter 6 is, in fact, Retribution. A Light in the Darkness is in the middle if chapter six – the fifth of seven steps.
The rest you got right though.
Can you also revamp the Zhaitan fight? Remove those minions fight and just let us fight Zhaitan.
No thank you on the latter bit for reason I stated in the thread you made in the lore forum.
For others, the minions he refers to are the dragon’s, Mouth, and champions on the ground. He’s wanting a net to remove everything but the worst part of the instance.
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.
Mmmmrrreeeeeooooowwwww, my heart is doing barrel rolls of joy. Thank you ANet and Bobby Stein for this effort and for the lucid communication about it.
Question for Bobby Stein:
There are quite a few story steps that could use improvements due to poor scripting (read: NPC actions in story steps). Some that come to mind are Underground Scholar, The Battle of Claw Island, and The Priory Assailed.
Is there a place where any… shall we say irksome story steps that could use tweaking be reported? Such things wouldn’t really count as “bugs” as far as I know.
For example of what I refer to:
- In Underground Scholar, you zone in to see the dredge already assaulting the Priory structure, however, the objectives and dialogues give off the impression that you missed a part where you are in the structure before the dredge assaulted, and went out to fight them to return to seeing Vyacheslav for only a moment before he retreats.
- During the Battle of Claw Island, there is some dialogue/cinematic/etc. scenes that don’t line up well or show what’s happening (when the first dead ship is sunk, when Commander Talon is killed) and the part where you have to hold off the risen easily comes off as never ending, especially to those who haven’t done it before (I certainly recall feeling like I was fighting for nearly an hour when I first did it).
- For The Priory Assailed, the destruction of the laser had near no reasoning for such happening, and though I think this was fixed the priory NPCs would wipe the floor of risen, removing any sense of urgency, as there would rarely be risen for players to kill (for once, competant allies!).
So yeah, is there a place you’d like non-bug ‘feels weird playing through this’ reports for the PS, since you’re working on them already?
Another question: any update on Season 1 bring made permanent as was promised in the past? Would be nice to have that before HoT…

I’m not sure if this was posted on March 31 or on April 1. This whole thread might be a hoax.

I’ve advertised for over an hour at a time with no results for HotW story and CoE story.
The new trait acquisition (well I guess it’s not new now it’s almost a year old) is junk.

It’s not a hoax. These changes are definitely real and we’ll announce a specific release date sometime in the near future.

It’s totally fine to give us feedback regarding story instances that you feel could benefit from some tweaks, but we’re at the point in this development schedule that we’re not likely to add them to the task backlog (a.k.a. the “list of things we’re able to do”). I’d suggest posting them on the story step discussion pages on the wiki and/or assigning them a category, similar to how folks handled the lore discrepancies reports.
Regarding Season 1, we have nothing new to announce at this time. As we’ve said before, we’d still like to bring it back someday (and hopefully make some improvements where possible) but we’re actively working on other projects at the moment.

Will you guys revamp the disappointing Zhaitan fight since this is the best chance to do it?

You can click on the “2 days ago” or whatever it is saying to get an exact timestamp of the post. Alternatively you can hover over it. In this case the opening post was published on March 31st, 17:16.

Please note that the core gameplay and structure of this story instance has not been changed—the difficulty has been adjusted to allow for solo play and will therefore be more accessible for players.

~Snip~
It’s a visual thing, if we want to get down to it, yes, the statement comes before they show all the ships surfacing, by a second or two…there should be a longer delay between the end of “A small victory.” and “Gods, there’s so many of them.” allowing the Undead ships to surface before you hear that second part, since that entire sequence is one cinematic. You’re right on the sequencing, I was more commenting on the tone of the two statements.
This reply is pretty late in the game, but if 5 players enter Victory or Death can we expect a tougher Zhaitan fight? I’d be happy to face the dragon at full strength if his powers are scaled up now.
On a related note, I’ll be on tomorrow’s Points of Interest and will likely mention some more information regarding the Personal Story restoration.
Yay! Look forward to seeing you there, Bobby. =)
Thank you so much! Now I can continue my Personal Story! Hurayy! Would you consider making the other story mode dungeon paths possible to complete with 1-5 players as well?
(edited by ArrogantHero.4965)
That change to the story mode is really great.
I would love it if you considered doing a similar change to all story modes, not just Arah.
Sometimes you just want to see the cinematics with the destiny’s edge characters and your character as lead without skipping them, and you can’t alway do that with other players.
That are great news, it seems I finally will take my personal story off itkittenus it has been since that patch xD.
Btw, while you are at it, can we get rid of the level gating on Personal Story? Can we have it available with each level instead having it in chunks? It could still be locked if your level is below that step but make it always available. It sux finish a part and have to wait 10 levels without no idea of what is next.
Personal Story helped me with exploring as it would lead me to explore the areas where the next step were going to be. Now we are left without no direction to explore around. Of course, exploring on our own is great and I like that, but what if we go exploring the opposite direction and then the next chunk becomes available? Give players more freedom to play it as they wish. (one can dream…)
Here’s my main concern so far. One of my characters has experienced the flawed version of the PS and since you can’t rewind the progress back, I’d have to reroll another character. While I could just grind for gear, I practically invested a heavy amount of gold on my previous character and it just wouldn’t be fair on my part to have to grind again just to get gold again to re-gear my character. Is it possible to request for duplicates of my character’s existing armor so that when my rerolled copy hits level 80, I can just set him up after? Same goes with the fact that I used a styling kit on him.

Finally
I’ve been complaining about those changes for a long time XD
I know a lot of people never cared much for it but im really glad complaints have been taken into account and these changes are coming
swapping the story steps around was a serious issue for me since I get very invested in the story more than anything when it comes to video games..
meeting characters for the first time after just completing a mission with them and honoring friend characters that I never even met was just a big throw off for me..
it really put me off playing the personal story through again..
but im super happy that its finally getting fixed ^^ I can’t wait to start leveling up my other toons once these changes have come into effect
I just watched PoI. I posted some questions in a discussion thread in the HoT forum but it’s likely more convenient for you to see them here:
Some questions I have:
What if you don’t do the PS? I personally will do all of it in all its permutations, but I know many players never bother with it. What effect would that have on zone play?
Will PS-result-specific dialogue only be audible to the player? So different people, even grouped, hear different shouts and comments?
You said there are changes in the PS revamp that have involved the cinematics team. We know there have been some re-recordings of lines by VO’s. I know you want to keep some as surprises but can you give a couple of examples of the more subtle changes that might otherwise have people debating “that’s new” “no it was always like that?”
And, not posted in the other thread: What’s the earliest step of PS that is getting reworked, even if only in small ways? I’m fairly far along on most alts but I think I have one or two that still have PS set in LA to get through. I’m fine with waiting to advance them if it gets me a chance to see the scenes in the proper setting.
The question “What to do with characters who stopped progressing the Living Story after the September patch and are in chapter 7 or 8” is still open. I guess that the answer will be to wait for the patch and pretend nothing happened in September? My Engineer is (still) at Estate of Decay and that is for me C8 Step 4A. If I continue now I will miss part of the story (the part that is now the end of chapter 7 instead of chapter 8 )?
Not sure if it has already been answered but from what I see if you had put your Personal Story in a hold since that patch I would say: “just continue doing so (not progressing it) until the fix comes live”. It seems the worse case and issues would be for those who progressed it through the changed order, so they could miss parts after the fix comes. However, if you didn’t “move a inch” on progression so far you have nothing to worry, possibly you aren’t going to miss anything. Btw, that’s my exact case. My chars’ PS has been on hold since that patch.
I also would like that and it would make a lot more sense. Although I can see a reason for what they did I have a suggestion: why not having another copy of the map to be used for these instances? I see they reused the current map maybe to not having copies of the same map in the game files, but what would be the issue for doing so? What would be a few more MBs for a game that has just hit 20 GB? :P I’m all for having these instances in their original look. Playing “An Apple A Day” in a destroyed LA ruins all the immersion.
The PoI addressed this very thing.^ Lion’s Arch will be back to its original form for the Personal Story, and I’m guessing that Fort Concordia will, as well. The Devs expressly stated that instances that were changed in the open world due to Living Story would be in their orginal form for the PS.
Yay! =)
Do we have any idea of when this will be implemented?

Oh woot, that’s great to hear. Sorry I didn’t see PoI then I missed it, thanks for the info.
Do we have any idea of when this will be implemented?
See the OP, it was said that’s in around 8 weeks at least.
This is maybe a stupid question, but my situation was not mentioned in the OP:
My Engineer was already in the Greatest Fear plot (Breaking the Bone Ship, not completed) when the NPE update launched. I stopped playing the PS at that point, hoping it will be corrected sometime
I would assume everything will be fine with my PS after the coming update and go on like it would have before the NPE update?

I believe so. If you didn’t progress any further after the changes hit then possibly you won’t miss anything after the restoration.
I don’t know if this topic is closed or not, and hopefully a dev or GM or whatnot sees this question…
Once this goes live, those that have done the Personal Story 100%, finishing the Victory or Death Arah mission, what will become of our Journals?
Will our journals reflect the new order of missions? As in will the parts of chapters be put in the original order? I know this isn’t a major question but as it’ll effect… a BIG amount of people, I and hopefully others are curious to know! Thank you.

Well with the return of old Lion’s Arch and Concordia, the minimum earliest would be Setting the Stage, the first level 40 (currently) instance. But going off of what I’ve seen, such is only for the visuals of being in pre-destroyed LA.
There is no earlier story step that takes place with visuals changed during the Living World (either season). The only possibility I can think of is in the human storyline: Triskell Quay. But I don’t think the Tower of Nightmares’ physical appearance has altered that far now that it is destroyed.
Unfortunately, there is no story step at Fort Salma or Viathan Lake, so that is forever destroyed unless Anet decides otherwise.
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

I contacted them and so far, they have not given me any options other than “we cannot help you.” I may be asking too much from them, I suppose but it’s not my fault I did not know at the time that there were missing parts of the Personal Story. And I don’t have the mats nor the gold needed to make ascended armor to just transfer over to my character.
Hopefully, some day, you will create a new character….maybe something like the Revenant, and take said character through the Personal Story so you can experience all the restored episodes/parts.
It would be unreasonable to expect CS to replace every character’s gear that played through the PS, or parts thereof, in the last year or so.
Good luck.
[suggestion]
since altering story progress for characters (ie, removing the progress from the character save-file) results in so many bugs… how about making a copy of the complete personal story, and labelling the copied PS “replayable story step chapter 1 step 1”, or “season 0, chapter 1 step 1”, etc. since it would be a copy, it would technically be a different instance, and therefore wouldn’t affect the character save file. granted, the new “copies” would have to recoded so as to not save the choices in the character save-file, but rather simply be more like the season 2 instances, with achievement flags,
(please forgive my pseudo jargon here, i’m not a programmer, so i tend to refer to permanent choices as save-file data, and gaining achievements to me is tripping a flag, in my own words)
so then you’d end up with two categories of personal story. you’d have category 1, which contains all the PS as restored, including the programming that prevents us from replaying the instances. category 2 would be the copied PS, which would include updated programming to allow for replayability and achievements, while removing the programming that saves PS choices to the character save files.. this would entail some work, but would prevent the game breaking bugs caused by resetting the PS.

since altering story progress for characters (ie, removing the progress from the character save-file) results in so many bugs… how about making a copy of the complete personal story, and labelling the copied PS “replayable story step chapter 1 step 1”, or “season 0, chapter 1 step 1”, etc. since it would be a copy, it would technically be a different instance, and therefore wouldn’t affect the character save file. granted, the new “copies” would have to recoded so as to not save the choices in the character save-file, but rather simply be more like the season 2 instances, with achievement flags,(please forgive my pseudo jargon here, i’m not a programmer, so i tend to refer to permanent choices as save-file data, and gaining achievements to me is tripping a flag, in my own words)
so then you’d end up with two categories of personal story. you’d have category 1, which contains all the PS as restored, including the programming that prevents us from replaying the instances. category 2 would be the copied PS, which would include updated programming to allow for replayability and achievements, while removing the programming that saves PS choices to the character save files.. this would entail some work, but would prevent the game breaking bugs caused by resetting the PS.
Yeah, same, I don’t even have a clue on how this stuff works but I really wish they would find a way for us to to be able to replay the PS. Maybe when they find a way to get the Living Story season 1 out in story journal form, they may be able to work in a replayable PS.
I can understand why we can’t replay it, as we make choices in them. Especially the choice of what order to be in. That wouldn’t make sense to let us replay and pick another order.
Still, for those of us that had to play it in it’s broken form (Between the Sept patch that removed the Greatest Fear arc and messed up the order of missions) it really irks me that our character can’t have enjoyed it as it should have been.
But yeah, totally understandable that it’d be buggy and wrong to let us replay the personal story due to stuff like what order/race we picked. So how about just let us replay from “A Light in the Darkness?”
or if not let everyone reply, at least let those that experienced it the “Broken” way be able to reply from A Light in the Darkness.
or if not that, at least fix the journal to reflect the change? Shrugs
Hopefully, some day, you will create a new character….maybe something like the Revenant, and take said character through the Personal Story so you can experience all the restored episodes/parts.
It would be unreasonable to expect CS to replace every character’s gear that played through the PS, or parts thereof, in the last year or so.
Good luck.
I suppose. Still, I am just asking for a replacement for one character only out of the 4 characters I have in my roster. The rest I have halted their PS progress until the fix.
