Thanks for the detailed update, this takes away a lot of worries.
With 4 characters having made it through the entirity of PS before the NPE and the changes that broke it, I’ve been withholding progress on my other 5 characters since September 2014. I’ve checked them all, and if I understand things correctly:
Ele + Necro2: C6 Priory Step 3 – The Ghost Rite (Should be fine, pre any story-breaking/changing steps)
Engi: C4 Step 3- Killer Instinct (Currently locked out, access to C4 is now beyond lv40, char is lv30 and unlocked access before NPE)
Guard: C7 Step 6 Innocent – A Sad Duty (Appears to be okay, I think I should leave this as is and progress after update goes live to ensure everything happens in proper order?)
War: C8 Step 5A – Ossuary of Unquiet Dead (since before NPE, should be fine and leave as is?)
I think that in my case, the best I can do now is wait just a little longer and do nothing, with no dramatic impact to my story. (Yay. I guess.)
However, I have a few points of note/concern with the status quo and impending changes:
Replayable Arah story mode going the way of the dodo. I would like to stress, first and foremost, that I am very happy that Victory or Death will be a scaled instance that can be played solo if wanted/needed.
That said, I don’t see why this must come at the price of no longer being able to replay it other than hitching a ride or playing an alt allll the way to this point in the story. Surely a more balanced solution could have been worked out? 2 versions of the same instance, for example, such as version one being the existing one (ArahStory1.game) and remaining in place as is, and version 2 being the updated version (ArahStory2.game), included in the PS. Both versions could add progress to Dungeon Master (whichever is played first), or just version 2, and the benefit is that it remains re-playable and easily accessible for those who wish to do so. Coding for both versions exists, so why not try to combine that? As others have said here before me, the last thing GW2 needs is even more content that ends up permanently locked beyond a certain point.
Story maps/scenery reflecting the game’s timeline. As in; currently not at all, such as with PS steps in LA showing post-Scarlet scenery. Grating, immersion-breaking, and completely undermining any and all effort to create a valuable story experience. Don’t get me wrong, I like Back 2 the Future and all, but I don’t think it works in a GW2 setting. I’m sure we can expect Tyria to change even more in the future- please take this point into consideration when you’re updating maps and find a way to fix/avoid this issue.
???
Profit! It looks like the update with intended changes may possibly coincide more or less with my wedding day. (Yay!) It is worth noting that further gestures of goodwill and well-wishing are perfectly acceptable to celebrate the occasion. (Hi ANet, a full set of legendaries in my mail as a wedding gift is totally awesome, but I’m sure I could settle for just one or two. I’m not picky.)
TL;DR version – wait, what? Go read, you lazy forum lurkers! >.>

I don’t know exactly what you meant there but it was already mentioned that they are brining the old look for the instance maps to look as it was “when” that instance happened.
Good to see story Arah becoming soloable, it should’ve been that way since the beginning. This also applies to every other story dungeon, they really should be soloable.
We should be able to replay PS, just with the choices fixed to the ones we took the first time.
Downlevel us according to the chapter, just like happen with the different maps, and add some achievements to the mix to make it more interesting.
If you want to replay a chapter with an old character, you can. If you want to try another path, you must create a new character.
No conflicts, no retconing, better replayability, no bugs, no complications. Everyone happy.
I can argue this. Some story chapters would involve having your characters choose options on how to approach the next situation. And having the other choices that weren’t the ones you picked initially be present be unchoosable when replayed would just make it even more awkward from a design standpoint.
Is there any news on when this is going to happen? I just reached the story step where I will be entering the dream with Trehearn. How far past this step can I go before I would start interfering with this upcoming change on my character? I want to experience the new story exclusively and to never have experienced this interim change they’ll be fixing.

From the OP it would be 8 weeks. I believe it’s around 6 weeks now from the date of this post (4/13).
I can’t recall what chapter and step is the one you are talking about, then I can’t tell how you would be affect and if you would be so.

I reread the OP and I am at the specific first mission relevant to this change. So basically if I want to experience the whole story I have to not continue with that character until it’s done.
Hmmmm…I have quite a few high levels, around level 80, give or take a few levels, and when the Restoration update went live, I did NOT receive the restoration for Chapters 7 and 8. The story skipped the entirety of “My Greatest Fear”, and onto “Forging the Pact”, and the “Battle of Fort Trinity”, in which I completed. Does it matter what level I am, before I choose “My Greatest Fear”, or is it just going to take me to “Forging The Pact”, no matter what my level is?

If you are referring to the Personal Story ‘restoration’, it will not be implemented for at least 8 weeks from the date of the OP post.
If there is one complaint I have in relation to this future update is inconsistency where the story dungeons before that would remain as they are but only the Arah dungeon will be changed. I think it would only be deemed appropriate if the story dungeons have adjustable levels of difficulty depending on how many people you are able to bring from 1-5.

I would also like to see the other story dungeons given this treatment and then also fit into the personal story where they belong in the context of the story. That way when you reach Arah the last thing you experienced from Destiny’s Edge was the group working through their issues and accepting each other, not the group coming together for a moment only to break up even more thoroughly back at level 30.
The very same thought, that the Destiny’s Edge dungeons should also be playable with 1 – 5 players, had occurred to me too. I decided I wouldn’t say anything until the current mentioned update occurred, for fear it’d push the release back weeks.
Now that the thought is out there, I’d recommend that they go ahead and release the final stage adjustments to the Personal Story as suggested, then make the adjustments to the Destiny’s Edge dungeons. I’d really like to see that content, and I’d prefer not to have to get a pug and find out no one wants to wait for me to watch the videos…

I have the same issue. While I have some of the cute scenes I’ve not seen all of them and I would love to see them with it being my toon interacting with the npcs XD
Though I admit I have started to look into soloing this content. AC story wasn’t too hard, the two lovers are the worst part and because I hadn’t realized my bow was what was killing me I called in a friend the first time to duo that fight but that friend hung back while I killed the king. But soloing is a lot harder than going in with a group and is a lot longer of a time spent in the dungeon if you’re only after the cute scenes.
I would rather they restore the personal story and finish HoT before worrying about dungeons. There is a lot wrong with dungeons and not with just the idea of not being able to see the storyline in the story mode after all the same thing happened with the story content in GW1 where most people skipped and got mad at you if you didn’t skip the content. It’s just the way it is in most games. People want the reward for doing the content but not worry about seeing the same story over and over again.
Given that there’s no indication of any of this information in the game itself, or the launcher, how is it fair to players to make it impossible to access so much of this content? I decided to work on some Personal Story progress today on a whim, and found out after my session that I have permanently locked myself out of Greatest Fear and other quests through no fault of my own, with no warning. This information should have been in the patcher since the day this was announced, and there should be a warning in-game when starting the respective quests. I’m… both angry and disappointed at this failure on the part of the developers. I hope there will be some form of reparations, and some attempt to fix this by way of making the quests available at a future date.
As a suggestion, other games such as The Secret World have fixed this kind of problem by producing duplicates of their story quests which are repeatable and replayable, made available as soon as the respective quests were done for the first time. It wouldn’t be enough to make up for the loss of rewards and the show of bad developer judgement, but it would be something.

This is an incredibly unreasonable expectation. Pretty much all of it. I don’t know what you think is involved in implementing this sort of thing, but it’s more, a lot more.
If your character has not completed Setting the Stage (chapter 4) will allow you to see every map (primarily Lion’s Arch and Concordia) as it originally was.
It says “(primarily Lion’s Arch and Concordia)”, but all maps will be restored to how they were when the game released?
Also does this mean that Southsun Cove will be removed until you make Living Story season 1 replayable?

What page was it? Also no, I think you must have misunderstood. What’s going to be restored are the map inside story instances, it will look as it was while you are doing Personal Story. Very possibly it will stay as it is on open world.
I’m not sure about this though as I don’t what wiki page are you referencing to.
Ohhh btw.. to the devs.. could you guys take advantage of this restoration and do something about the stupid “feature” that makes players to get confused about their order? It doesn’t make any sense to change a bunch of their story for co-op’s sake. Here is what I’m talking about:
Again it’s just a confused and unneeded feature. If anyone want to play with others they can just follow each other and one invite other to the instance, no need to mess up with their story tracker.

The personal story is instanced and does not affect the open world. The map for LA will be the original map when you are doing a PS mission that takes place in LA. When you are not in a PS mission, you will be in the LA as it exists currently. Think of the PS as being a form of time travel. When you’re doing a PS mission, you are temporarily sent to the world as it was at the time the mission took place.
So, when your PS first sends you to the brand-new Fort Concordia to meet with Trahearne and plan the advance into Orr, you will see a brand-new Fort Concordia. When you are outside the PS, you will see the wreck that it has become due to later events.
The same thing will be true of Southsun if they make LS season 1 replayable. When replaying a chapter, the world will be as it was when that chapter took place. Otherwise it will be as it is currently. It will be no different than season 2, where the door to Scarlet’s room in Prosperity is closed when you’re playing or replaying the early chapters, but is wide open whenever you’re not playing the story.

The maps only change during the personal story. Basically, you travel through destroyed (and later on, renewed) Lion’s Arch, and once you enter the instance you witness the original Lion’s Arch.
This does not talk about the open world. I’m sorry if my wording was confusing, but there was an implied “during story instances” at the end of that sentence – seeing how the article which that’s on is about the Personal Story.

I wrote that up based on Bobby Stein’s OP here, and the PoI afterwards in which he mentioned that story instances will use original maps if they’ve been changed in the Living World.
I’ve updated the line to be more clear.
Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.
“The Cost of Victory” is pretty much the only Achievement I have left in Hero Achievs. Within the 4 months that I’ve been back playing GW2. I’ve mananged to lvl 8 characters and all have completed the main storyline.
I have one mule that I can run though the storyline again which is fine. I can burn through them pretty quick, but I assume “The Cost of Victory” is directly related to “My Greatest Fear” restoration… which I had to look up because it was the only thing missing.
I always thought it was weird doing the storyline 8x and tree lady kept asking me those weird questions about my fear no reason :S

Earliest we’ll see the update is May 26th. But in all honesty I’d probably expect the update to come 16 weeks from the announcement, not 8 (Stein said 8+ weeks) – which would be July 21st.

Hmm…why do you say 16 weeks out of curiosity?
The pvp community reminds me of what Obi-kittenenobi describes Mos Eisley as from star wars.
Here’s my main concern so far. One of my characters has experienced the flawed version of the PS and since you can’t rewind the progress back, I’d have to reroll another character. While I could just grind for gear, I practically invested a heavy amount of gold on my previous character and it just wouldn’t be fair on my part to have to grind again just to get gold again to re-gear my character. Is it possible to request for duplicates of my character’s existing armor so that when my rerolled copy hits level 80, I can just set him up after? Same goes with the fact that I used a styling kit on him.
I’d contact Customer Service if you have questions or concerns that aren’t covered in the original post or F.A.Q.
I contacted them and so far, they have not given me any options other than “we cannot help you.” I may be asking too much from them, I suppose but it’s not my fault I did not know at the time that there were missing parts of the Personal Story. And I don’t have the mats nor the gold needed to make ascended armor to just transfer over to my character.
Ascended gear is always account bound. If you equip it it’s still account bound. If you put it in your bank it’s still account bound. If you wear it on a second, third, fourth toon it’s still account bound. This goes for armor, weapons and trinkets/necklaces/earrings/backpieces etc.
The only problem you’d have is making your character look the same as your first one.

So long Treeface.

they already added Trahearne dialogue on Battle of fort Trinity cinematic, just finishing my other character story missions. shame we have to wait too long, I just made another character, well i’ll just have to do crafting then, never even explored the map.

To expect it in the minimal of what’s said is to set oneself up for disappointment. Setting a high number results in higher chances of it occurring sooner.
Plus lately my hopes and expectation in Anet has lowered greatly. So a high number it is.
Lastly, I’d be surprised if this wasn’t put alongside the trait line (aka core specialization) changes, and likely other pre-HoT feature patch changes.

Yeah, wiki editors have noticed small changes in Trahearne’s dialogue lines throughout.

Yup ill agree with that! I was thinking more 12 weeks, but 16 wouldnt be to horrible either..i dread the day the 8th week passes though.. I could also totally see them doing that, it would make alot of sense unless the plan on keeping it split, which would be odd.

So do anyone know the ETA for this? Like maybe 3 weeks?
Q: How long do I have to advance my character’s story past “The Source of Orr”?
A: While we haven’t set a release date at this time, we can confirm that you will have at least 8 weeks from the time of this posting (March 31st)….
So, yes, the earliest would be in about 3 weeks; though there is, and has been, no set release date.
Yeah, I wouldn’t hold my breath on that yet. Still, I got more reason to just focus on map completion first. That way I can get the bags of loot that come with the Personal Story in one big bulk.
Still, I would appreciate at least some kind of update as to the progress of the patch development. Just a general idea of how close they are to finishing it.
While it would be nice, I don’t see the need for them to weigh in now. In two weeks, when the minimum time has passed, then they should give an updated estimate, if only to prevent daily “are we there yet?” posts. Bobby already gave us a far more concrete goalpost than we usually get.
Even MORE steps between having lost claw island and getting fort trinity? Way to go anet, you have managed to degrade my experience even more. Remove some of the steps so you do not make it even longer for us who have not reached there yet.

These are steps that should never have been removed in the first place and are arguably the best part of the later story line. Getting them back is something many of us have been demanding since they were removed because we believe they enhance the experience. Nothing is stopping you from going to Ft. Trinity (or beyond) any time you wish outside of the PS.
Nop, the latest news was it was coming in at least 8 weeks from that initial post (that seems to be tomorrow). Nothing else was said so far.
Obviously, it won’t be ready tomorrow.
I know this is not what you usually see on the forums, but it’d be nice from ArenaNet to tell us how much is the minimum waiting time they’re expecting now that the 8 weeks are almost over.
So, Bobby. Just like you said at the beginning of this thread. How much is the minimum time we should expect to wait for this to happen, right now?
I’m not asking about when will it be ready, but when it won’t.
