You might be the only person to ever say that the personal story is better than LW1/2 / HoT.

Personal story was … horrendous.

I think I might just be a nostalgic person because I totally miss it and would love to do it again haha

The Personal Story had some good points. Mainly, it was that each plot was convincing, and most of the NPCs felt like developing or developed characters. Mostly. By which I mean 95% of the time give or take.

But it had a lot of bad points too. You move on to a completely different storyline too fast, and completely ignore past storylines once they no longer matter. The mechanics are dull. The cinematics in the rare cases there are real cinematics and not the two-characters-side-by-side (which while not bad… there’s a lot of story steps where they’d be greatly improved by switching those out with HoT’s open world dialogue) are often bland, boring, and buggy. And the story instances were too short.

The good and bad points effectively switched around with Season 2. But one thing remains consistent, and this is a bad thing: it’s too rushed.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

In my opinion season 2 was the best so far.
The original personal story was nice story wise but lacked good encounters. Its just one-shoot nearly everything.
Season 1 lacked the feeling that it is YOUR story, cause nearly everything was open world. Sure there were good encounters like the marionette or scarlets holo, but these were for huge groups and only temporarily available.
Season 2 felt good. To discover new things and build up for HoT. There were good fights, nice mechanics, hard mode versions. Really great.
HoT felt … short. You get just one instance for nearly anything, while the personal story and living season 2 guide you trougth the story with several instances. There is no build up like in the figth for zhaitan where you gather an army and figth your way to him. There is no research part like in season 2 where you discover a lot of things. HoT would really have needed more sory instances for how to handel with the pact, more interaction with the itzel/nuhoch and the exalted. More regather the pact. More off many things.

I loved the cinematics with the characters side by side! The open world dialog moves so fast and sometimes if I’m not looking the right way or my volumes down I will miss it! But yeah it was kind of rushed in retrospect but the character development was really good. Just sucks that I did it on my main 2 years ago and I can’t go back now and do it again on my main just for fun haha

I kinda liked the side by side cutscenes too, because I could see the characters in more detail. Now I’d have to zoom in and try to make sure I’m always looking at the character speaking right now to see those details.
The talk scenes now do feel more natural though, with everyone present in place and visible, not only the two people talking atm.

Storywise, I prefer the current developments. Can’t compare to LS1 however, since I missed that.

The PS wasn’t terrible. I really think what happened is that they got bogged down in having excessive ambitions for it and it ended up just falling flat because they overwhelmed themselves in the execution.

What it really needed was a lot more immersive, dungeon style instances where you’re fighting alongside cool NPCs and a lot less awkward, shallow dialogue cutscenes taking place amidst 5 minute-long missions in an instanced version of the normal world. It would have probably turned out better if they hadn’t tried to implement so many ultimately meaningless branches. I’d love for them to revisit it at some point and make it more in-depth and more interesting, but I doubt it’ll ever happen.

Hopefully they can continue to refine their storytelling over the course of the Living World. LW season 2 was vastly superior in execution to either the PS or LW1, so I’m optimistic about the future.
