Phantom event markers
At least some of them are these:
Grab yourself a Stabilizer and start getting event credit! They are the easiest and fastest map events in the game.
You can find them in almost any map (sans Starter Zones, I believe), including Cities. They are especially prevalent in Ascalon.
Good luck.
It is not related to the stabilisers, it is bug which has existed for some time which comes goes. Ive had it many times, unrelated and long before the stabiliser events started.
Ive reported them before, but since ive never deduced a pattern to what causes it, its difficult to give them enough context for a fix
There are only two, that I know of, that were around before the Rift events. One in the Black Citadel, and one in Divinity’s Reach. They are both ‘ghosts’ of past Living World events. There may be a few others, but most now seen are Rift events.

I reported plenty in Blazeridge, Brisbane, Frostgorge and Snowden previously. This was before the Rift Events. I suspect it’s a bug with the event tracker somewhere. It certainly occurs less frequently (for me) than it used to, so I’m not overly bothered by it anymore.
The rift events could be it.
But, even after reading the wiki, I don’t know what to do about them. How do you jump through a rift? I don’t think I’ve ever even seen one.
And, it’s impossible to jump through something when the only way to create it is by having a device that you only get AFTER you’ve jumped through it.
Finally, if it was it, and it’s this easy to figure out, why doesn’t tech support know about it? The latest action they gave me was to rebuild my game from scratch.
Someone else opens a Rift; you jump through. I open them all the time. If you are on NA, I would be happy to open one for you.
Unfortunately, not all of the CS Team plays the game, or are as familiar with it as some of us. You could update your ticket, or contact Michael H., and enlighten them.
Good luck.
Also, the “official” way to jump through them is to wander around the lake where they happen, since they will sometimes open without human interaction. Getting someone who already has a stabilizer to open it is much easier though. (Also, when the daily is events in one of the zones they spawn in, at least some people like me run about and open them, so just looking around might work.)

Perhaps they assumed that you knew about the rift events, and wouldn’t report something that was working as designed? Alternately, perhaps they don’t know about them at all. Hard to say.
You would have to ask them about that. Incidentally, adding that to your ticket would be a useful way to help communicate back that they need to update processes to handle this…

If you go to Gillscale Pond at Fields of Ruin, there should be some rifts in that vicinity that start out open for you to jump through and kick off the whole thing. That’s where players were directed to head when they debuted five months or so ago.

That would work, but it doesn’t solve the problem. Somebody had to open the first rift, with a device they could only attain once they had already gone through it.

AHA! THAT solves the problem. I wish I had read your post first. Thanks!
Seriously, though, I’m also open to being asked nicely to open rifts for people in game.
Well, I was going to post that the Rifts open by the pond spontaneously, but it can be a rather long wait, at times.
It’s easier and much quicker to have someone open one for you.
Your choice, of course. Good luck.
Thanks for all this info. I’ve noticed the “phantom” markers and just blew them off, assuming they were glitches. Maybe some are not. Looks like a trip back to Fields of Ruin is in the cards for me.
Me, too, Sarpan.
Thanks!
OK, I’ve talked to Auris now, but his dialog is supposed to change once I’ve seen him teleport. It hasn’t. Am I missing something?
And, what does a rift look like?
OK, I have one now. I was right: you can’t get it without someone else’s help.
So, how did the first one get into the game?
As stated above, they spontaneously spawn, but not often. At the time of release, there needed only one to spawn; after that there were always plenty of people around opening them.
It’s just faster and easier to have someone else open one.
OK, thank you!!!

http://dulfy.net/2016/10/04/gw2-october-4-current-events-guide/ — includes a picture of a rift, as well as general guidance to getting it done. FWIW, dulfy is both good and fast when it comes to guides for pretty much all the current events in the game.
I can only assume someone pays them the big bucks for doing this.
Thanks!
Now all I need to do is get my other 14 characters over there (the device is soulbound).

Yeah, I recently went through and did it on an additional character. It’s really annoying that you have to do it that way. At least it’s relatively fast.
Pro tip, since I was confused for a bit: go to each destination with the stage 1 stabilizer, then go through it one more time to break it. Not just visit all the destinations. I found this out after a long time wondering which one I had missed, deciding on one as “the most likely”, and breaking it when I screwed up and jumped to the pond.
Thanks!

Soulbound? shudder My 15 characters feel the same pain.
You don’t need a Class II Stabilizer to take advantage of Rift Events for Dailies, etc. A Class I Stabilizer works just fine. So, no real need to go through all the Rift destinations.
Good luck.

good to know; for some reason, I thought we needed II
(still, it’s frustrating to need an inventory slot for every single toon)
You only need the Class II Stabilizer to turn yourself into a hostile anomaly and let other players kill you.
I’m not sure how long we’re going to get to keep these stabilizers working as they are, but they sure make for cheap transportation if you’re ready for it. Now I’m not so bothered by those “phantom events”.
Do be aware, it’s not required to jump through a Rift once you’ve opened it, and/or stabilized it. That would kind of defeat the purpose of using a Stabilizer for the Daily Map Events completion. ; )
I don’t use them for travel because a Rift event must be near when I’m ready to travel, not to mention I would have to look up the coordinates because I’ve never memorized them. The only one I might use is the one to Dry Top to try to get the Diving achievement there.
Good luck.
