I’m trying to decide on a main, I know I know play what you like but after reading profession forums and it seems like there are only 3 viable professions for all round game play warrior, guard and thief. The rest of the professions are either bleh or only good situationally or nerfed to the ground. Is this just general forum whines or is it really not worth leveling anything but the 3 above??

I guess it depends on what you want to do, but every profession is viable in this game. More so than ever after the last few patches which have shown some love towards Necros and Rangers. Arguably mesmer is the weakest class ATM, but they are still a standout utility class…

Necro and mesmer are both great, and ranger supposedly is pretty good now. Me personally, I picked mine based on innate movement speed. Its the one thing in this game that has a constant effect on the efficiency of whatever you’re doing.

I <3 my ele, but I just connect with that class it seems. From what I’m told its good in pvp as well, but generally I’m just a pve scrub….

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

i would say that it is just general forum whiners.

a good guild mate of mine mains a necro and she kicks butt in WvW, she doesn’t even like to play necro in Spvp because she says that it’s not sportsmanlike enough. so she instead kicks butt in Spvp with a ranger.

in my guild i’m one of 2 people that mains a warrior, the rest usually either play rangers, mesmer or ele. we regularly run dungeons and have had zero trouble to this day. the only class i see very little of is engineer but engy’s have always been a little rare.

to me it’s all about being creative and inventive. for a while people thought the ele was terrible until someone picked up dagger/dagger and started building for healing power. i say don’t listen to the forum haters and instead build something that they will scream and cry about because you are a little cleverer then them.

Every profession is viable. Find people of like mind and forget what everyone else says. Warrior was my first 80. I knew nothing of the game and failed at making a good build and gear set up. So I shelved him and leveled a Guardian. I found I could live through almost anything and played that for a while. I had tried an Elementalist but I was squishy I couldn’t play it anymore; that is until I came back to it later and read up a lot on the class and how to play it better and now I love it. Now I just hit 80 on my 4th character, a ranger. So much negativity said about that class but I am doing exceedingly well. I’ve also now revisited my warrior and geared him up nicely. With might stacking I am hitting up to 29k with certain abilities.

I also have a mesmer in the 60’s and I love it. I have tried an engineer about 5 times and scrapped it each time, until I made a cool looking Asura and I love how it looks and moves with dual pistols and a flamethrower. I play it purely for fun and I suppose I will work on leveling it at some point.

Basically anything has its place and can be fun if it feels right to you. If other people’s opinions do have an effect on you, then you’re going to have to decide if you are going to let that guide your choices or not. I say heck with them and find a good guild who doesn’t have those issues.

Those 3 professions still have niches. Ok, Guardian is good everywhere. But warrior isn’t that great in PvP and thief isn’t that great in dungeons due to limited support capability. But they each have their strengths. My engineer main is amazing to me cuz it’s so versatile, is useful in every facet of the game, and is constantly underestimated. I may not be able to dungeon dps like a warrior, but it’s way more fun. Mesmers are another profession that have a lot of group utility as well as being very good in PvP & PvE.
