I noticed that the wooden boxes we pick up on a lucky drop will contain an item that is considered valuable, however, I got one today and it was a pile of putrid essence. Are these essences even worth having anymore? They sell for nothing on the TP yet they are organized in the same tier as a rare or even exotic item. I don’t think this is right, it raises a lot of hopes thinking its something awesome to be severely disappointed with a “t6” crafting material.

All the items with the rarity “rare” (Yellow text) is in these wooden chests. And the putrid essence is indeed rare

I guess just hold on to them. They don’t take up room in your inventory and maybe one day a new recipe will come out and they will be worth something. Or if you haven’t leveled crafting yet, use them for that,

The main issue with these things is they dont seem nearly as rare as rare weapons and armour, I usually get 3 of them per 5 chests

It is an increadable letdown to finally see a chest and get something like this. It does follow the guidelines of rare, it is just not useful.

I think the reason they’re not worth so much is because there used to be a fair chance of them dropping from Risen enemies. And there were SO MANY RISEN in Orr, combined with the low amount of recipes that use them and the low desirability of them, that everyone got them, nobody needed them, nobody wanted them, so they all got dumped on the TP.

Eventually they started dropping less often, and with the lower amount of Risen in Orr since launch they’ve become a lot more rare, but the damage has already been done.

I think it’s similar to Ancient Bones. In Halloween, they dropped OFTEN from enemies in the Mad Realm (Especially skeletons), and the high numbers of skeletons made them easily farmable. Due to this, the price went down. However the only reason THAT didn’t crash was because bones are still highly desirable both for crafting various insignias and as a component of every Legendary recipe. A similar instance, yet not as extreme.

Supply and Demand, dude. Supply and demand.

And not even one of the hardest ones to get either. I get those constantly when I’m in Orr. That’s the sad part. Where are the lodestones at in these boxes? They are like water in Arabia seriously, that’s how scarce they are!

These things are basically diamonds these lodestones are yet we have them as a regular design to be crafted.

Each loot group has a specific set percentage chance of dropping. Arenanet didn’t want to risk people leaving/not-buying due to the ridiculously low drop rates they think should be used, so instead they bumped up the drop rates and filled each table with a bunch of junk. Thus the, hypothetical, drop rate of 0.0001% gets cut in half or worse.

They’re just the risen version of lodestones.

Unfortunately you can’t crafting anything interesting with them, aside from powerful potion of undead slaying. -_-
