Played another MMO for 10 min. back to GW2
I really dislike most MMOs. I’ve always liked the idea behind them, or rather saw the potential, but very few MMOs can hold my interest for any length of time.
What was it?
Feel free to name, names…
I completely agree with you Vayne, I have tried several other MMOs and just couldn’t get into them at all.
It’s terrible design. If they are all that bad I’m surprised this genre ever got off the ground.
They’re all that bad.
MMORPGs rely on keeping people addicted to mediocre content, so they keep doing mindless and boring tasks over and over for some small and irrelevant reward.
GW2 is better than most MMORPGs, which translates to saying it isn’t as mediocre, but it still has a long way to go before going from “not a mediocre game” to “a great game”. I’m not sure ArenaNet is moving in the right direction, though.

I may get infracted, but it’s Darkfall Unholy Wars.
It’s from a small developer and is suppose to be full loot PvP, which my RL friends like. But the interface is terrible. Movement is so clunky I don’t know how you are suppose to fight. Every action takes a ridiculously long period of time.
When I started the basics, my friend said to me, start chopping the tree and go hang out with your wife for a while. You can chop the tree for half an hour. WHAT?? Who chops trees for a half an hour????
Maybe it’s suppose to be a lumberjack simulation.
Let’s not even talk about it crashing while I was running around and losing my mount.
What was it?

I think any mmorpg that not GW2 is like this they like the shard nodes and loot drop making rng far worst and the ability to make gold soo much more painful. Something even like shard exp is soo bad for a team base game why would i get less exp from events and mobs if i am doing it with other ppl i just do not get it most mmorpgs punish ppl for being in a group when it comes to getting exp. I am so happy that GW2 dose not do this.

I think for people who have this as their very first MMO, it will be nigh on impossible to play any older MMO. For people who have played other MMOs first (not Guild Wars 1 mind you, but “true” MMOs), they might be able to get back into other MMOs.
While I agree that it is really nice being able to chop down trees in a MMO, I do miss actually fulfilling a role in-game. That’s probably the reason why I still play other MMO’s, but yeah, I agree that chopping down trees is much more rewarding overall in this game.
GW2 is my first MMO. Before this I was playing BF3, BF2, BF1942, and HL mods, . All FPS games.
Whenever one of my buddies mention another interesting MMO, I search up a video on youtube to see what it’s like. All MMOs seem to have terribly boring combat mechanics, lame clunky animations, or are super extremely grindy. Either that or they’re ruined because they have subscription fees or are “pay to win.”
I would not play any other MMO out there at the moment.

You make like ff14 reborn then there is a simulated tree chopping over all node farming in that game! Just non of the fast combat and more then likely a LOT of grinding.

Not sure, I’m really enjoying The Secret World and Neverwinter, i still pop into GW2 occasionally to help my guild with guild stuff but i’m gone pretty fast after..
I guess a lot of what people complain about, quest givers, mounts, trinity, need/greed etc never really bothered me at all anyway..and those two are way less RNG based..

lol that’s right!
There are these little and big stuff about gw2 we totally take for granted now that have to absolutely be a trendsetter for the genre.
- When I try another mmo it’s always like AHHHHHHHHH QUEST HUBS!!! HELP!!!
Why the hell did I ever play a game that revolved around quest hubs?
- Or when you start moving around and you notice all skills are interrupting and you go like.. “wtf” Then you instinctively start reaching for your dodge button….
- When you open the map and see a tragic UI
- When you look at the minimap and say “kitten me”
The core of the game is really the best I’ve seen and we take them for granted until you play something else. So far, no competitors there.
Just FYI you don’t get infracted for naming other games, MMOs or otherwise. Some people like to use “the Other MMO” (which always makes me think of “the Scottish Play”) but I think it’s more for effect than anything.
Of course if you were to start a topic about why another MMO is so much better and GW2 is doomed now it’s out and/or must immediately change to become an exact clone of this other game and anyone who disagrees is a brain-dead fan boy then you probably will be infracted. But it will be for the content of the post, not naming another game.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
Not too long after the launch of gw2 I tried getting back into my old mmo too… I had left a lot of friends there, so decided to see if I could play both.
1. Why isn’t my character attacking..? .. Oh, wait. I have to stand still and let this mob punch me while I punch it back.
2. Doooooodge! <healer wondering why the hell I’m moving… Again.>
3. Why can’t I use my skills…. Oh. Right. Mana.
4. Fly, land, fly, land, fly, land. Right. 6 was bound to flying, not healing.
5. "Oke, I can kill this mob from downed state, np! <no downstate occurs>
This is impossible. <logout>
Gave my account and items from that game to a friend who divided the stuff among other friends of mine. Never going back there.
I tried some other mmo’s, but nothing keeps my attention like gw2. The fact that I also don’t feel ‘forced’ to login helps a LOT with my enjoyment of the game.
The mysteries dissapear and life stands explained.”
Kill credit. Any time another MMO has required me to be in a party to get credit for helping, and being helped with kills, I have almost instantly rage quit since GW2 came out. It is so unbelievably wonderful to not hate the fact that there are people around me.
Painbow.6059: Ignore what anyone else who doesn’t agree with me has said because its wrong.
I agree with pretty much everything in this thread. I always liked the idea of MMOs but until GW1 and GW2 I could never find one I really liked. I doubt I’ll ever be able to play another one (until GW3 of course)
To be fair though I’m sure there’s people out there who would list off all the things GW2 doesn’t have like mounts and raids and a subscription which IMO make it better as negatives, things that make the game unplayable and would really hate some of the things it does have.
But hey, that’s why it’s good that there’s more than 1 MMO in the world.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
The one thing GW2 has over most mmo’s is the nodes being able to be gathered by everyone..other than that…….
and the OP might have been talking about Age of Wushu
I really dislike most MMOs. I’ve always liked the idea behind them, or rather saw the potential, but very few MMOs can hold my interest for any length of time.
I agree, but I will take it further. I like the idea of MMO I just hate their implementation 99% of the time and think MMO are simply just really really bad video games when you compare them to SP. Honestly, I m beginning to just hate the genre, to the point where I might just abandon it.
This is an mmo forum, if someone isn’t whining chances are the game is dead.

Er… I was expecting you to say a different game.
You can’t really compare DF:UH and GW2. People play them for completely different reasons. There are very few people who play DF for its PvE, sort of like EVE.
It’s a very niche game, meaning that the players put up with a lot of BS design flaws to get the specific gameplay element that DF has to offer them and that no other game does. If you aren’t there for that specific gameplay element, then you lasting 10 minutes in that game is a testament to your patience.
I honestly thought you were going to say Rift lol
I always find it funny so many people always say how great it is to move while casting and they could never play a game that doesn’t let you move while casting and crap.
Then I log on my staff ele and wonder what the hell they are talking about. On the good side even if I had mana I would never run out. With an average cooldown of 15 seconds on non autoattacks, I usually just run in circles while I wait.

Er… I can’t say I’ve ever stopped casting once on my ele. By the time I finish a full rotation between all of my attack skills on all attunements, my first attunement and its skills are back up and ready >_>

Yeah, I know. It just happens to be a niche my friends like a lot. So they are willing to put up with the problems. It’s very 1996 in its presentation and UI, so I guess it’s not really a fair comparison. Nevertheless, the experience was terrible.
That said, if you are looking for a PvP environment that is winner take all, why make me run around and do PvE to gear up for it. Why make the experience so terrible?

you know.. theres this groups of people that think that gw2 will get destroyed to oblivion by eso once its comes out..
you know.. theres this groups of people that think that gw2 will get destroyed to oblivion by eso once its comes out..
Could be, but from what the company itself is saying (downplaying mmo) and that it is multi-platform I have serious doubts.
Even if it became hugely popular it would not ‘kill’ anything.
I imagine I’d feel exactly the same way with most other MMOs. It’s not that I consider GW2 perfect, but it just feels so much better to actually play than any other MMO I’ve played before (except for some aspects of The Matrix Online.. though a hybrid of that and GW2 gives me happy dreams).
you know.. theres this groups of people that think that gw2 will get destroyed to oblivion by eso once its comes out..
The same people will say ESO will be destroyed once Blah-Blah comes out. They will be wrong then, too.

Anyone that actually keeps up with that game knows it won’t be destroying anything other than itself. It’s gonna be a sad blemish on the face of Elder Scrolls.
Comparing Darkfall with GW2 is a bit like comparing the bottom of the trash container of a fast food with the best dish of a gourmet restaurant… the first is a pile of junk made by amateurs, and the second is a quality product made by top notch professionals.

So true. One is definitely like a fast food restaurant. Fast, easy, cheap garbage food and they give you a happy meal toy too. They even have funny mascots similar to Hamburglar, Grimace, Ronald McDonald and Sundae his dog, and Birdie the Early bird.
I dislike all MMO’s. I’m just wasting my spare time here waiting for a new game to come along that spikes my interest. It seems to me like a really bleak time for video games. I remember times where I was torn apart by all the games I wanted to play. Now I look at whats out and I’m scratching my head wondering when something I will enjoy will come out. Right now, I’m waiting on a game called DayZ to be released. Not sure on the date, but it was dropped that the alpha would be out this month. I played the mod and it was awesome and the only really bad thing about it was the hackers and they have apparently done a lot of work on that for the standalone.

Nice attempt at being smart, but quite silly too and a total failure at the end. Have you ever played Darkfall or its sequel?
The software is a pile of bugged junk, the game is a gankfest without any content. Comparing it to quality games like GW2, but also to any other AAA MMORPG (recent or older ones), is hilarious. You don’t compare a Traban with a Ferrari and pretend the Traban is better quality unless you want to be laughed at.

The MMO Genre is the worst monopolized market in the gaming world. Developers purposely make their games with bad design so that you “patch” its flaws with the cash shop.
Unfortunately GW2 is not immune to the “patch” cash shop (as we’re forced to use transmutation stones), but it is miles better than a majority of MMOs on the market. Which just goes to show how poor the genre is.
The reason people are asking all sorts of things from other MMOs to be added to GW2 is that they like GW2 for some reason and they don’t like the other MMO for the same reason so they want the best part of their mmos to become a part of GW2 so GW2will be perfect for them.
This tells a lot about all other MMOs
Darkfall Unholy Wars.
surprise surprise
anything with “dark” in the title is always going to be stupid tho.
(unless it was followed by camelot)
That doesn’t let Anet off the hook though.
Even their Lore and Art has been taking a sharp detour off into LaLa land lantely.
They need to get back on track, get ppl playing together instead of merely farming together, get their kitten skills Split up, and quit doing this Living Salesly bs.

You obviously have no clue about what production quality is. I’m not talking as a GW2 player, but as a software engineer myself for the last 25 years. GW2, but also WoW and many other games are definitely Ferrari quality software pieces compared to junk like Darkfall… or shall I say Darkfail.
Just compare EvE online to Darkfall then… both being supposed sandboxes (supposed for Darkfail, it’s more a gankfest than a sandbox) with a heavy PvP part. The difference of quality is huge. One (Darkfail) is a pile of crap made by amateurs, the other (EvE) is top quality software made by professionals.
EvE, GW2, WoW, etc… are in a totally different league than crap like Darkfail, in every aspect, be it technical, artistic or content wise.
So the OP not being happy with Darkfail isn’t really a surprise to me.
You may want to ask why I’m so negative about Darkfail… well, simple, those guys are trying to sell a pile of junk ($40) with a monthly subscription fee ($15) when you have 100% free to play games which have a hugely better production quality. This disgusts me not only as a professional, but also as a video game player.

I keep sampling other MMOs but have trouble sticking with them.
WoW I can stick with a bit longer because I have history with it. But things start to grate on me after a while.
This MMO, GW2, really was made for the ‘rest of us’ that were not happy with the common norms of an MMO. You can have a game that is an online shared world full of a huge number of players all there at the same time… and it can be anything.
But every other MMO is basically a copy of EverQuest… Which I’m told is a copy of Ultima Online… Which I know is a derivative of LPMud (That I was once a major developer of).
But Ultima Online was the last innovation in MMOs before GW2…
There are really only 3 MMOs out there: LPMud, Ultima Online, and GW2. Everything else is just a re-skin of one of those.
The entire format has been locked into one trope since 1997…
I don’t care of Ultima Online. I left LPMud in 1991. I finally have a third choice.
(Some might say fourth, as Second Life is ‘the other choice’, but that is a derivative of MUSH rather than LPMud.)

EQ is definitely not a copy of UO. UO was fully skill based (you design your character as you want to), while EQ is class/level based. UO is a sandbox, EQ invented the raid grind “endgame”.
And yes, GW2 is closer to games like UO or also Asheron’s Call 1 than to EQ, and that’s why I enjoy it so much. After 8 years of EQ/WoW clones, finally a top developer dares to do something different in a AAA quality MMORPG. Just for that, ANet deserves the money I give them.

With all its problems GW2 is still leagues above most other MMOs.
What i like to do (and did in GW1s time as well) is every now and then try one of those standard korean grinders just to remind myself how good we have it with GW2.

I know exactly what production quality is as well as production value. They are independent developers doing things on far less of a budget. A niche game that you don’t like. Regardless of your opinion on it they are doing fairly well with what they have and are competing with the current top MMOs.
I don’t like Darkfall myself, but just hate seeing people slam independent developers into the ground for trying to create something other than the usual copy paste MMOs.

/nod.
I concede that I have not tried Ultima Online and my comments to it were based on common statements I see. If it is different, then the line of MMOs being all the same starts at EQ…
Which means we have 4 choices, as I have yet to see a sandbox MMO. But I set my standard for that high: Give me a Second Life ability to make and upload PERMANENT CONTENT or its not a sandbox.

MMO’s sucks, plain and simple. Destiny and pso2 are the only ’mmo’s’ coming in the near future even worth mentioning, the rest without exceptions is a joke
I don’t play darkfall so I’m not sure if what I say is right. But is people clueless?
You can’t have shared resource because it’s a full loot pvp game where people fight over resource.
And 2 min on portal so people won’t teleport out when their in danger in a full loot game.
That is bad game design? That seemed the right thing to do.

Sorry, but being an indy developer doesn’t excuse the production of overpriced trash. There are indy devs who produce quality games… and thankfully many are rewarded for it. One good example would be Minecraft. But there are others, like aventurine (the Darkfail developers), who produce trash and ask more money for it than what AAA developers ask for their high quality games. They are obviously trying to milk unsuspecting buyers who indeed are attracted by “something different”… but sadly, being different doesn’t always mean quality. Would Darkfail be free to play, with a cash shop, I would be less harsh, but it isn’t… those guys think they can sell their trash the same price than top quality games and then also ask an as high monthly sub as top quality games too.
I don’t slam independent developers for trying to make something new. I slam them for creating overpriced trash which gives a bad name to the whole MMORPG genre.
It’s also amusing that you think that “they are doing fairly well with what they have and are competing with the current top MMOs”. Thankfully, that’s not even remotely close to be true. To be competing with the current top MMOs, they would need at least a 10x bigger player base, and that’s just to appear at the bottom of the list.

MMORPGs rely on keeping people addicted to mediocre content, so they keep doing mindless and boring tasks over and over for some small and irrelevant reward.
which is a sad thing and should never be the case. gw1 was amazing just because it had none of this.(and only small amounts in eotn)
gw2 is so far from this ideal tho…… :’(
I briefly tried a different mmo some months back. It was sooo boring. You needed to gain reputation for your faction or whatever it was and you had to run from the NPC, named Henry, to a spot in the city then back to him then to another spot then back to him then to another spot then back to him then…… I literally fell asleep while playing that game. My eyes closed and I started to fall over and jerked awake. Uninstalled shortly after that.
And don’t get me started about the loot rolls. I had only played GW at that time and that was new and unpleasant. Combat was a big yawn also.
I think people are just clueless. Darkfall is an open world full loot pvp game.
That is why resource isn’t shared. That is why it take time to teleport.
you know.. theres this groups of people that think that gw2 will get destroyed to oblivion by eso once its comes out..
The funniest thing about those sentiments is that ESO is clearly a GW2 clone.

Tinted glasses is strong in this one.
Guild wars 1 had just as much mediocre content as any MMORPG. The only difference is, you idealize guild wars 1, while you hate that Arena net for not making gw 1.5.
Anyways, the problem is with the genre, all mmorpg are mediocre because of their multi-player nature, they have to sacrifice a lot of things to prevent trolls, lag and they have to take into account bad players and computers.
But I suppose it is the cool thing to hate on guild wars 2 on this forum.
This is an mmo forum, if someone isn’t whining chances are the game is dead.

Yeah, that’s why I didn’t mention the game at first. I know its a different kind of game. It doesn’t explain why it can take hours to salvage stuff, or chop down trees. Unless it’s to provide a punishment for getting ganked.
it also may be that other MMO’s are more polished and I’d like them better. However, to me the difference was shocking.
