Played another MMO for 10 min. back to GW2
Would Darkfail be free to play, with a cash shop, I would be less harsh, but it isn’t… those guys think they can sell their trash the same price than top quality games and then also ask an as high monthly sub as top quality games too.
I don’t slam independent developers for trying to make something new. I slam them for creating overpriced trash which gives a bad name to the whole MMORPG genre.
F2P with a cash shop for a hardcore, pvp centric, FFA, full loot mmo? I think it is fairly obvious why that model would be highly unlikely to work.
I enjoyed the game despite the rather inpet dev team.
(edited by Fenrir.3609)
I think people are just clueless. Darkfall is an open world full loot pvp game.
That is why resource isn’t shared. That is why it take time to teleport.
40 dollars for the box and 15 buck subscriptions to play is the dagger to its own heart..i’d run COF 24 (essentially suicide) hrs before shelling out that for such a bland game demanding huge fees lmao
Hahaha not the mmorpg.com ratings please! You can’t be serious using those as reference for the popularity of a MMORPG. Do you realize that list ranks failed games like Vanguard, Ryzom or Warhammer higher than the world’s first MMORPG World of Warcraft? Talk about a pile of rubbish.

And asking a monthly fee as high as AAA quality games isn’t any better. Would they ask no purchase price and something like $10/month, it would sound more reasonable since their game is a pile of bugged trash. Asking as much as a AAA quality game is arrogant and greedy. The OP paid for it… sadly.

I wont lie, I played another MMO for about 10 years.
My friends and everyone was talking how much fun GW2 was so I decided to google it and seen it had a unique story telling method (which I love) and events on every single map. I fell in love with the music also.
I played for about 5 hours straight when I first got GW2 back in december and fell in love with it. Haven’t stopped playing since and this game is now “my main MMO”. Best thing with GW2 is if you get bored with PVE, click a button and boom, you’re in PVP or WvWvW.
Last week I repaid my 13~usd fee to play the old MMO I played for 10 years and after a hour I found out that browsing the web was more fun then playing the actual game. The game play is really sloooooow You hit the enemy once, he hits you back, then repeat about 15 times and you win!
I hope GW2 expandes and forces other MMO companies to sweat a little because in reality GW2 does have its faults but in general is kitten better then other MMO’s out there.
MMORPGs rely on keeping people addicted to mediocre content, so they keep doing mindless and boring tasks over and over for some small and irrelevant reward.
which is a sad thing and should never be the case. gw1 was amazing just because it had none of this.(and only small amounts in eotn)
gw2 is so far from this ideal tho…… :’(
Tinted glasses is strong in this one.
Guild wars 1 had just as much mediocre content as any MMORPG. The only difference is, you idealize guild wars 1, while you hate that Arena net for not making gw 1.5.
Anyways, the problem is with the genre, all mmorpg are mediocre because of their multi-player nature, they have to sacrifice a lot of things to prevent trolls, lag and they have to take into account bad players and computers.
But I suppose it is the cool thing to hate on guild wars 2 on this forum.
no it did not. it’s nice seeing you try tho.

At the time the sub fee was relatively standard. Dropping it woudn’t have done much for the game in the long run.
Furthermore the whole “same as AAA games” thing doesn’t sit with me at all. Most of those AAA games are wow lite polished kitten clones. Some would rather pay for the indie game.

Nice try, saying “most” people.
Just ratings don’t mean much. Even so, take a close look at how many ratings those games have, Darkfall has 260 and Guild Wars 2 has 1008. I think it’s fairly obvious who is the winner (by a very long shot) and how much of a difference there is here. I wonder if Darkfall ever had 1000 ratings how high ranked it would’ve been.

Yeah, according to that list, Vanguard, Warhammer and Ryzom beat Guild Wars 2 and World of Warcraft. Very credible. I think ANet and Blizzard laugh at that kind of lists all the way to their bank.
I guess “success” is also the reason why the first game of that list, TSW, went “free to play” shortly after its release…

Nope.
GW1 is a hugely flawed game. ArenaNet took it apart and basically self-destructed it before the game could reach its full potential, and it was impossible to salvage it so they decided to begin again.
And even then, even with all those issues, the game has always been better than the other MMORPGs. Mostly because it actually tries (most of the time) to be a game for human beings, instead of being a glorified Skinner box waiting for rats.

25+ years, and also playing MMORPGs since UO early beta 17+ years ago (and MUDs before that, too). I was developing professional graphic software on a Commodore Amiga when most people here didn’t even know personal computers existed.
Like it or not, WoW is still the most popular MMORPG of the planet. You don’t need to like WoW to acknowledge that. It’s just like that movie, Avatar… even if you don’t like the movie, it’s still the highest grossing movie of all times. Your personal opinion doesn’t matter, and neither does mine. Like it or not, WoW is still the most popular MMORPG of the planet.
WoW would need to gain 12 million subs to even touch Age of Wushu. It never has been the most popular on the planet, never will be.
In before the lock!
I started playing MMOs with the original Everquest and stuck with it from Velious to Planes of Power, before moving onto WoW and played that till defeating Arthas. After WoW I really couldn’t even look at another MMO without being instantly repulsed by the idea of playing one.
Then my brother in law introduced me to GW1. It was different enough from a traditional MMO that I’ve stuck with it. I still play it on occasion since I’m working towards Legendary Defender of Ascalon. I also played GW2 since Beta2 and I’m still very much enthralled with this game.
I’ve also tried other MMO’s since. Both TERA and RIFT I’ve found astoundingly mediocre, though TERA has a few winning moments. I’ve also been playing Neverwinter Online from open beta to ‘release’ and while I enjoy the solo quest and the fighting mechanics of that game, the rest of it isn’t all that interesting to me. I said to my girlfriend the other night, GW2 really has spoiled me to all other MMO’s.
I think it’s important to try other games, you might find a gem, or you might be reminded why your favorite is your favorite.

You deny something all charts confirm… have fun living in your own little bubble of personal truth. And you pretending Wushu has more players than WoW, even nowadays, is just the proof of that.

I see where our opinions differentiate then. Popularity trumps personal taste in your opinion. McDonalds was a fair comparison then seeing as that franchise feeds more and pulls in more on a day around the world than that gourmet restaurant does.

i went to swtor for a while it was ok despite horrible interface which was lol pay to use. but story of swtor was nice and playable unlike gw2 story which is horrible. storywise any other mmo is better than gw2 i think. they should really invest into making story something else than funny crap. it would make pve 100 times more interesting. i like to claim a big portion of people and not looking for funny teddy bears when they look for a fantasy adventure. and this is exactly what we get at the moment, teddy bear adventures.
i also tried neverwinter beta but gameplay felt so horrible i couldn’t play it for more than maybe 1 hour until i figured out it will probably never be at the level of gw2 in any way. quest grinding also felt pretty horrible.
have to say one thing they’ve made right here imho is the interface, skills and traits in general. it just feels intuitive and works in most parts even though balance needs some work in pvp.
on other hand gw2 lacks in story and some other parts like where the h are our guild halls??? or more pvp options like in gw1 for example. i hope we see improvement some day soon.
This is the reason I’m still playing GW2. After over 1,600 of game play, I am starting to run out of things to do and the monthly updates haven’t done much to help there. however, there really isn’t much out there at the moment that I find playable after playing GW2 over the last year.
Recent betas haven’t been much better, but eventually one of the promising upcoming titles will be as playable as GW2. Eventually.
It’s ironic that the game with the biggest potential, Wildstar, comes from NCSoft as well. I guess it’s good for NCsoft if they are the ones that can offer the only viable alternative for GW2 players who need a break and something new. Not so hot for GW2 though.

Player percentages. GW2 is in it’s right place. It’s a great game compared to what’s currently on the market.
There are several mmos which I have previously played which I would say I actually prefered to GW2. They might not have been as polished, or had as many players, but I enjoyed them more all the same.
That doesn’t take anything away from GW2, it isn’t a competition as far as I am concerned and I am enjoying my time in the game.

I don’t care for player opinion when the stats are obviously biased towards those who like the product. The population voting on those mmorpg.com ratings is definitely not representative of any general tendency. Just look at the amount of voters… some games have 1000+ voters, other barely 200, others not even 100. Talk about worthless data.

Darkfall is apparently a game for “Hardcore PvP’ers” where it’s basically just grind to win.
If a game is focused on PvP there should be no gear-advantage at all. A pvp-focused game with a skill/gear grind is for people with too much free time and a big ego to satisfy.
I recently read about a guy that spammed macros for two months and he still wasn’t able to be competitive in PvP.
I really considered buying the game because I like competitive sandbox games with full-loot, but paying a monthly fee to get ganked by people who have been grinding for ages is not my cup of tea.

I definitely agree with you there OP. I tried fooling around with LOTRO was completely and utterly disappointed. I’m actually shocked that these older games are still in business without bringing their UI with the times in many ways. And I hate having to go thru and play catchup with both leveling and gear with the antiquated questing system.
Even games like STO CO and NW all have systems of improved leveling choices so that they don’t hold you back with the use of the quest system. (they still use it but they’ve adjusted the rewards numbers so you’re not standing there doing that for weeks at a time like what I experienced in LOTRO).
WoW at least had the heirloom system to help with that but from what I’ve heard even they have trouble with their newest expac causing people to not want to play when they’ve returned because all of their friends are already max level and they have to go thru the entire process for the last five levels. They did have the option for getting 1 max level toon if they bought the special edition but still that doesn’t help for long time toons you’ve played forever.
It’s just something they’ll have to fix in these other titles it’s going to take time tho it won’t happen overnight.
With all of the good things that GW2 has brought to the industry I would hope that they’d learn that lesson as well and update their UI in the ways that have already been pioneered by other companies. There’s alot of good things here but they have ALOT of work to do with their UI to make it modern. Things other games have had for years should be in this title and we’re waiting with bated breath to see what happens with Anet next.
Things like:
LFG (WoW)
Guild Perks (WoW)
Global Map Event Locations (FireFall)
Dual Spec (Rift/WoW)
Outfitter/Cosmetic Wardrobes (LOTRO/WoW/Rift)
These things are simply essential to any modern game imo, not having them is like not having power locks or air conditioning in your car. Sure you don’t have to have those but they have long become part of the standard expected UI elements in every mmo.
(edited by tigirius.9014)
I may get infracted, but it’s Darkfall Unholy Wars.
Er… I was expecting you to say a different game.
You can’t really compare DF:UH and GW2. People play them for completely different reasons. There are very few people who play DF for its PvE, sort of like EVE.
It’s a very niche game, meaning that the players put up with a lot of BS design flaws to get the specific gameplay element that DF has to offer them and that no other game does. If you aren’t there for that specific gameplay element, then you lasting 10 minutes in that game is a testament to your patience.
I honestly thought you were going to say Rift lol
Yeah, I know. It just happens to be a niche my friends like a lot. So they are willing to put up with the problems. It’s very 1996 in its presentation and UI, so I guess it’s not really a fair comparison. Nevertheless, the experience was terrible.
That said, if you are looking for a PvP environment that is winner take all, why make me run around and do PvE to gear up for it. Why make the experience so terrible?
Yea. It’s also very indie in comparison to Arenanet. It was made by a team of 11-12 people. Arenanet is corporate. Would be like comparing a one man hot dog operation on a street corner to McDonalds…
I really dislike most MMOs. I’ve always liked the idea behind them, or rather saw the potential, but very few MMOs can hold my interest for any length of time.
I do agree with this, which is why I’ve never played one until now (sadly never played gw1).
Still a lot of repetitive content – hearts for example, and the gear systems, however it contains enough elements to be enjoyable without pressuring you.

By all means do quote me on where I compared their production quality or value. The only time I said anything about production quality or value with Darkfall was pointing out they had a far lower budget to work with. Don’t make things up.
GW2 is my first MMO. Before this I was playing BF3, BF2, BF1942, and HL mods, . All FPS games.
Whenever one of my buddies mention another interesting MMO, I search up a video on youtube to see what it’s like. All MMOs seem to have terribly boring combat mechanics, lame clunky animations, or are super extremely grindy. Either that or they’re ruined because they have subscription fees or are “pay to win.”
I would not play any other MMO out there at the moment.
you must be longing for destiny then? i sure am, if they do it right i’ll probably join it, tbh GW2 isn’t rewarding to do challenging stuff like high level fractals. the combat is the best one out there, but i just feel they have to nail the reward balance aswell. imo: time + skillfull play == the best g/h.
time + mindless grind == less g/h but still good, maybe 80% of the skillfull play g/h
but atm CoF farming is untouchable.
it’s still a great casual game witch i will enjoy for the most part.
I m beginning to just hate the genre, to the point where I might just abandon it.
Well yeah, this genre is nearly a “gaming” genre at all i’ve skipped a ton of titles until gw2 cause they all end up being glorified conditioning box at some point, if not from the get go. Never been my favorite. So being the top MMO atm doesn’t amount to much.
But c’mon, GW2 does have a horribly bland story, no choices no character and was horribly hyped to the point of total BS but it’s the closest thing to the quality of a sandbox single player RPG the genre ever got (if i’m wrong feel free to PM me ammo i might have missed).
Now to think about it. That’s really sad, after over 10 years.
the before and after gw2 for me, these are games I enjoyed or thought I might enjoy alongside gw2 problem is gw2 has raised the bar for quality and polish so far up none of the current mmo’s can keep me interested for more than a few minutes.
examples:
- neverwinter:
the rooting effect, the quests system, the trinity, the grind and choppy animations made me uninstall it quicker than I could say I quit.
- Rift:
choppy camera, slow boring gameplay, weird looking animations, the flawed map system
and this is a game I bought and played for 6 months, now I think what the hell was I thinking playing this crappy poorly developed game ?
It’s the same theme for almost every other mmorpg I have ever played before guild wars 2
to me even before gw2 was released, they were all crappy boring, grindy, poorly developed games.
Guild Wars 2 is the only mmorpg I can play because it has what I’ve been asking for years.
as I come from console gaming I never understood how or why anyone would play those crappy poorly developed sorry excuses for good games kind of BS.
all those games have a common theme, grind till you drop, boring slow static gameplay
The Secret World isn’t that bad :P
I get my GW1 “fill” there and their customization is supreme. I also I get to play as a person with “normal clothes” (Aka pants and hoodies with a pair of white sneakers)
Also Caithe voice (Kirsten Geary) has got t be my favorite MMO NPC of all time.
But GW2 is my home now. And it’s a nice, cozy home where only GW1 can make me leave. Even though I’ve raged on these forums a bit… I admit I love and admire what GW2 has become.
I’m usually typing on my phone
Hahaha not the mmorpg.com ratings please! You can’t be serious using those as reference for the popularity of a MMORPG. Do you realize that list ranks failed games like Vanguard, Ryzom or Warhammer higher than the world’s first MMORPG World of Warcraft? Talk about a pile of rubbish.
It’s funny how people love to quote MMORPG whenever their own game makes the top ratings, but the second any other game they don’t like gets up there “OMG MMORPG.com is rubbish! No one likes them!”
I don’t believe its tinted glasses at all, Guildwars was by far and above better than Guildwars 2 even prophecies, in every way, but then i always preferred Story, great game Mechanics, that didn’t hurt the player and actual Game-play over Sand boxed treadmill RNG cash cows… I guess everyone is different..

Actually if anyone is talking Rubbish it’d be you, World of Warcraft the worlds first MMORPG!!!! what are you smoking? or how old are you?
Because i was playing multiple MMORPG’s long before WoW raised it’s ugly head, I was actually enjoying Anarchy Online when WoW was opened, i thought WoW was bad then and i still do now, WoW was just a copy of a few others at the time, as with everything Blizzard make they copy everyone elses ideas…

I can’t go back to my previous MMO even if i want to.GW2 just spoiled me:
1.Being rooted on one place to be able to cast any spell??Hell no!
2.MMOs with queue entering times. With none overflow system to let me enter the game when ever i want to play it? that is so old fashioned
3.MaintanceWTF i can’t play every week in a specific time for ours
4.I just can’t make myself to going back to a quest and quests hubs
I really like GW2 and just can’t go back to other MMOs.Four years ago my 1st MMO was WoW.I played to the end of Cata and then went to GW2.I have never played before any Anet’s games.Later this year when i was bored of the game i tried some other MMOs like rift, tera and even a RPG like PoE but i just couldn’t get into them. They felt so out dated with their combat mechanics.

Another one with reading comprehension problems…
“World first” as in “the most popular, with the biggest player base”. I know it’s not the first MMO, I was playing UO beta 17+ years ago…
Djokovic is the “world first” tennis player, that doesn’t mean he is the first person to ever play tennis.
English lesson over.
A PvX guild for mature players with a life.
There must be a reading comprehension problem on your side here. I never said that. I said it was the “world’s first”, as in “the most popular”, or also “the game with the most players”.
You know, just like “Novak Djokovic” is the world’s first tennis player. It doesn’t mean he was the first person in the world to play tennis.
“World’s first” does by itself just mean “The first in the world”, not the highest ranked. Just be more clear the next time.

Stay in school kid, that’s not a reading issue, your English is messed up.
Lets hope I get the same feeling.
Maybe it’s suppose to be a lumberjack simulation.
That exact game would fulfill my every dream.
