I wanted to discuss the concept of playing the other gender. Is it wrong? or perhaps deceptive? I realised when playing my mesmer (as a male) that we look quite feminine with the purple/butterflies and thought how much better it would look if i was playing a female.

Anyway i just thought it would be interesting to see other people’s opinions.

Why should you care what people on the INTERNET think. Make your character however you want, whether that be based on you, or however else you want to design it.

I honestly don’t see this as an issue in any way. Most of my characters are male, thus reflecting my true gender, but one of them is a female. There was no particular reason for this, other than I wanted to see what some of the options were for women in the character creator.

I think that anyone who would go so far as to say playing a character of the opposite gender is “wrong” or in any way make an issue out of it is just taking the game way too seriously.

sigh this topic again? We just had a huge thread about this and at least a couple others in the past 2 weeks. Not sure why this topic needs so much debate….but it always comes up in every MMO forum at some point or another. Gamers seems to love to debate gender vs. sexuality in RPGs. But I don’t see a female or male character and immediately thing bow-chika-bow-waow about the person at the keyboard.

Trust me, your heterosexuality is perfectly safe if you choose to play a fictional character of an opposite gender. Likewise, your loyalty to the human race is also perfectly safe if you choose to play a Charr, a Norn, an Asura or a Sylvari.

Yes – again. Get over it. I would rather play Lara Croft than her father – is that odd or deceptive?

I feel the same way. If you are a girl and play a male toon, and Visa Versa. Why does it matter what gender you play?

I think the answer to this question is some dudes on the interwebs use games, to meet girls, and when they find out that, that “Smexy” avatar female toon, is really a dude. Their dreams are shattered about finding that special someone who likes the same games they do.

What I get from My girlfriend is, she thinks it is immature to play PC games, If she liked them as much as I do, then it could be another way of here and I bounding. So dudes get upset when that avatar they fall in love with is just another dude. For those that do not know: Pro Tip

MMORPG really means = Mostly Men Oline RolePlaying Girls.
GIRL really means = Guy In Real Life.

Yeah, links in me first response, I’m suspectin’ this one’ll be locked pretty fast. I guess ya gotta give it, though, if somethin’ comes up so often it must be important ta allota people. (or jus’ the same people in every forum ;P )

Talkin’ about the butterflies, though, got me thinkin’ about those pretty-magical-girls in anime, doin’ their spinny transformations an’ what. I’m never gonna get that image outta me head now an’ every mesmer I see, I’m gonna put “sailor” in front ah their name.

How is it deceptive??? It’s just a video game toon like any other.

The only time it would be deceptive is if you are looking at toons and trying to pick them up in real life based on their toons avtar.

How dare you say that about my charr mesmer!

Real legionnaires wear purple, and butterfly collecting is super manly

I got tired of that other thread a while ago, but I’ll just say that concepts of femininity and masculinity shouldn’t stop you from doing something. Just because something is feminine doesn’t mean it’s bad and vice versa.

And it’s only deceptive if you view other peoples’ characters as depictions of the player themself. Just don’t. My characters are characters, not me, I don’t project myself onto my characters.

Hello everyone.

Thanks for your contributions.

TakaEagle, as other players have already pointed out, this topic started a while ago and lasted for some pages in this thread, so you can always check the opinion of the players in that one. We let you discuss and add your opinions but after a while, the topic derailed. We have no doubt this will happen again with this one and therefore we will proceed to close it .

As already said before, play the game as you see fit: there are many combinations of gender/race to make each character unique in its own way.
