I believe that free server transfers—even limited to a 24-hour timer—are causing more harm to the game than they’re worth. I realize there are good reasons why they’ve been implemented, and I do, on a certain level, appreciate being able to transfer servers without having to pay anything, but at this point I think most of their reason for existing is gone.

Here are the stated reasons for free server transfers and why they’re no longer needed:

Server transfers will be free until server populations stabilize. I think this is the easiest concern to answer: as long as server transfers are free, the population can never stabilize. Combined with public WvW rankings and players insisting on jumping to high-ranked servers (leading to WvW guilds leaving those high-ranked servers), free server transfers are ensuring that server populations remain in constant flux and that the WvW ladder will remain uneven at best. Closing free server transfers—with fair warning in advance, of course—would actually help to stabilize the populations.

Server transfers will be free until guesting is implemented. Can I be honest? I’m not convinced guesting is needed right now. You can already do dungeons and sPvP with your friends from other servers. While you can’t join them in the open world, I think it’s worth sacrificing that privilege—temporarily—to ensure more stable server populations and communities. Guesting is a great feature, theoretically, but I don’t think free transfers should remain until a feature that still doesn’t have an ETA is ready.

While it’s not a magic fix to problems with WvW balance and ranking, I do think that closing free server transfers as soon as humanly possible will go a long way towards stabilizing server populations and helping servers to build more cohesive, meaningful communities.

The free transfer system is being abused and needs to be stopped asap.

Free transfers should of been closed WEEKS ago…OR at least put in a 1 week CD on transferring. WvWvW is royally screwed up because of free transfers…

Yeah, they need to stop free server transfers asap. Or at the very least they need to lock down the higher populated servers. Right now they only lock them when they are full. They need to lock them down regardless of whether their status is full or not. I know they want guesting to be live first, but I think it’s for the best to lock things down and then introduce guesting later. The free transfers are actually preventing realms from stabilizing.

Free transfers should of been closed WEEKS ago…OR at least put in a 1 week CD on transferring. WvWvW is royally screwed up because of free transfers…

Agreed, the guilds swapping servers to be on the winning WvWvW is really killing things on our server, as 3 big guilds have recently left after losing one week (which is sad in itself).

I wouldn’t mind keeping the transfers open… but increasing the cooldown to 7 days like Rift. It was long enough that people will at least think twice about hopping servers and will have a good reason to do so.

Edit: after thinking about it longer… maybe 14-21 days? since 7 days would just mean they’d hop to the tier 1 servers weekly.

no… how else are we supposed to get the WvWvW part of world completion if we are on a not so good server?

Even Anet said to use the transfer service to get the WvWvW part of worl completion. Also many others said that was the way to do it in the other forum post I asked about it.

Until they do something about moving vistas and POI’s in WvWvW to outside strongholds I prefer they keep transfers free.

They need to close this, because it is already stacking and unbalance the WvWvW population. My server is now being overrun for weeks. What’s fun in that? We can hardly proceed at capturing at all.

We are always outnumbered 1 to 4. How we are suppose to defense and the foes are spawn camping all 3 exists from our base. Game over for us basically.

If you are patient any skill point that’s bugged will be fixed soon enough. I’ve had it happen to me several times and I’d report it and the next day it would be fixed and I could get the point. No transfers involved. And for the map completion, again if you are patient just wait for your server to get the part of the map you need the following week. There is no need to destroy WvW for these types of things and the free transfers ARE seriously messing with it.

Before they close down the free server transfer they need to program the game so that their support team can transfer your characters for you…My wife got hacked on her account and the hacker transferred her to a danish server. And of course Tarnished Coast (her original server) was full for over a week. And the only thing that GW2 support team said to us about replacing the gold, items, materials, or even transferring her back was…“Just consider this a fresh start.” There is alot that ANet needs to do before they cancel free server transfers…they don’t even have an account rollback ability yet.
