I think an option to save a build(traits, utilities, weapons, runes, and sigils) and quickly switch between them when not in combat would be a great addition to PvP and also PvE. Currently the only way I have to save builds I am testing with, is to take a picture of my screen. This feature was included in Guild Wars 1, why can’t we have it in Guild Wars 2?

I can’t see this happening in PvE. What do expect will happen? You get a zerker staff of bloodlust or night, set to build, then salvage and sell sigil? The only was that this could work is a “deposit” of your armor and weapons. But +(over 9,000) for PvP builds!!!

Could you please explain how this would be used though? Like say I just got out of combat and want to swap builds. Would there be a tab that you hit “WvW build” then all your gear is swapped and skills changed?

This could only be as an option to save builds of trait distributions and utilities.

I see what you are saying with the weapons and armor, like maybe you would salvage or sell the weapons, if you have done that, then simply everything else will swap over except for the weapons.

Yes that would be pretty much how it would be used. Instead of sitting there for maybe 5 minutes making sure you have switched everything, you would select a build you have saved from a drop down menu in the hero tab.

Yes please on templates like in GW1. I’d like to at least see this for traits. I have to retrait a lot when I switch from one type of gameplay to another and it’d be nice to not have to look through screenshots I’ve taken to remember what the heck I had been running before.

Heal/Utilities/Elite templates being included in the template would be cool but not so necessary. I switch utilities constantly in WvW between running somewhere and making it happen when I get there. The utility templates wouldn’t do much for me personally.

It loads up template, but notifies you that some of the template’s elements/parts/whatever couldn’t be found. It’s not like it’s inventing a bicycle, it’s been done in other games ages ago.

This would be a worth while addition. It would allow people more freedom to experiment in their down time if they can readily switch back to something tried and true at a moments notice. I’ve seriously been considering rolling 2 extra clones of the same toon just So i can keep a PVE, WVW, SPVP profile stored. It’s nothing new in the MMO world but I think it should start becoming standard. Huge quality of life improvement for people who want to experience all three types of game play on a daily basis.

Yes, DO IT! I assumed they will introduce that with the free trait refund with the April Feature Pack (anything else would’ve been non well thought out). But yeah, they managed to introduce it without saving templates. I feared that this will happen and it’s still not here.

Why do you implement this like you already did in GW1 with templates and now you do the same in GW2 not giving us the option to save our builds? Sometimes I really wonder how the structures in this company work (now).

Anyone mentioning GW1 still hasn’t got the message- the only connection between GW2 and GW1 is the name, which was used to sell more copies at launch.

One of the best features of GW1 was the ability to change your build and skills and save all your builds, as well as share them between players. It made build diversity easy.

Why it wasn’t in GW2 from day one will forever remain a mystery (stand by for usual white knights telling me how easy it is to swap all traits, weapons, etc and why would I need a function for this). As I play several classes and have several builds for all of them, this sort of function would save me throwing pieces of paper around the room looking for a build sheet every time I want to spec back to a specific build for (say) my engineer.

The whole gear stat/rune/sigil system is in a bad need of a revamp imho. It is crippling experimentation in wvw/pve. I’d like to see a system where you can unlock sets of stats, runes and sigils for gear pieces, and then be allowed to swap them on demand, like the traits work now. For each armour piece, merging a rune will unlock it for that piece. Same for weapons and sigils. As for stats, an option to merge same slot armour/weapon/jewellry bits with different stats into a single item with swappable stats.

Right now, either you invest in a new armour set (and have fun with vault space), or you lose the previous runes. Or you gemcash to extract the runes.

So for example, instead of collecting a Soldier armour set with Traveller runes, another Soldier armour set with Melandru runes, and a Zerker set with runes of Strength, collecting the pieces would afterwards leave me with a single armour set with swappable Soldier/Zerker stats, and Traveller/Melandru/Strength runes.

I know i’d go ahead and craft/buy the various stats and runes with a system like that. As it is, i don’t bother after setting up a max of 2/3 sets per character.

This actually sounds pretty neat, and is probably quite close to what we’d get if this were implemented.

I envisioned build saving as involving additional tabs or pages for gear. You’d still need to physically equip the weapons, armour and trinkets on each tab (presumably additional tabs would be bought with gems). For example page one could be a full berserker set, page two soldier and so on.

I think this could add some depth to the game, while tackling some of the current inconveniences.

(1) Each page would function independently, and the equipment on each would be transmuted separately, allowing us more options for cosmetics along with the stat changes. I can’t count the times I found a perfect look for a character, only to come across another one I wanted to try.

(2) It could make weapon swapping for the single-set classes a bit less cumbersome. For example, an Ele can equip scepter/dagger on page one and a staff on page two. Doesn’t fundamentally change game play because you’d still need to leave combat to swap.

I will say something about PvE “build saving”. Well actually it should be called “trait & utility saving” since i cant imagine how it can work with our gear outside of PvP.

Have a possibility to save my traits & utility skills would be insane!

On my ranger:
-Trapper
-Condi tank
-Spirit Zoo
-Bearbow zerker
-Shout support
-Dodge master

On my warrior:
-Dungeon zerker
-Support worker
-Selfish stance tank
-Usain bolt
-Stun master

And many many more builds that I have and every time I want to switch between one of them I have to set everything again and again and again.

For example the best way to show how important it is – dungeons. For an organised groups of speed runners it is really important to switch few skills or traits on the way to next boss to kill it easier and faster. Some kind of build saver would be really helpful.

This is actually really suited for PvE(specially dungeons & fractals) where the convenience of having trait spreads and utilities swapped with one click gives the most quality of life change.

Gear template really isn’t necessary, armor and trinkets aren’t normally needed to be swapped out in PvE, weapons are fast to swap out too, but swapping out traits and utilities for maximum dps, solo skipping, “support”(might stacking, reflects and stuff) takes more than 1-2 secs.

This is very useful in PvE especially if you solo dungeons. I swap builds, armor, weapons, etc between bosses and mobs in some dungeons when I solo – especially Arah. In WvW, it would be useful again if you run with a zerg and have to switch from a backline setup to a frontline setup as your group composition changes.

There was another thread that went into detail about this concept, the general consensus on how it would work was …

1) You can only swap when not in combat.
2) You have to have the armor, weapons, etc in your inventory. Equally, you have to have enough open inventory slots to remove hold what you are removing or swapping from.
3) There would be a cool down between swaps, perhaps 60 seconds (a nerf of sorts, particularly for PvP game types).
4) You would get two save slots to start with, any more could be purchased from the gem store and it would be soulbound.
5) You cannot swap runs/sigils in and out of armor/weapons as you cannot today without destroying them or using an extractor.

Of course, there’d be more detail to it but that’s basically how a lot of us think it should work. Not only would it benefit the players, we agreed that ANet would be able to make some gem story cash from it too – so everyone would be happy.

I’ll try to dig up the thread …

Most importantly, for Anet – if they provide a Build Template mechanism with, say, 3 slots per char – they can then sell us more slots in the Gem Store as an upgrade.

For the other MMOs I play that have Build Template mechanisms, this is always done. Imagine how many slots we’d want/need to unlock to experiment with traits/skills/etc.

Actually, that would be a good idea for legendary armor.
crafting the pieces should actually be less expensive as to craft a legendary, but rquires to craft each slot for its own (separate head / chest / a.s.o.). What you get then is “eternal” armor with no stats nor runes. You can meld it with your already existing exotic armor to unlock its ascended stats with it (drag & drop), while also melding it with all kinds of runes (drag & drop) that you’ll be able to hotswap on the item from then on forth (double-click for opening the interface on it).
Make eternal Armor acc-bound and everybody has a new armor-set he’ll want to craft, a new farmfest to QQ about, and a new opportunity to cash in t6 mats.
To reduce the QQ a bit, you could make it into the first universal-slot item, so every class can wear it, regardless what armor-type they wear. Once they equip eternal armor, it will automatically generate the proper armor-value for the class (light to light / medium to medium / heavy to heavy) as long as it is equipped.

I wish I saved the reference but several months ago a similar suggestion was posted and a red post basically said they were working on something along the lines of templates but didn’t have anything to show at the moment. So, I believe they know we want them. It can’t be a 1:1 version of GW1 templates can it? The design implications are different as the combat environment has changed. Do they allow it in wvw? Will attrition battles be about who can swap out to the best counterbuild after disengaging? What are some other considerations that weren’t present in GW1?
