Please conduct more surveys
I agree, what better way to find out what people like and dislike about your game than just asking them? Would be far more efficient that filtering through the forums. I would take the time to fill one out.
“…let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we shall die;.”
Agreed, I like the survey Idea I even mentioned it myself some time ago in some thread I can’t remember :P

Anet, please conduct more surveys.
I believe you could get the information you need in order to target ‘problem’ areas, in a very precise and efficient manner.
Many people love doing surveys about something that interests them—they feel like they’re contributing and being useful.
Win/Win.
Thanks.
Sounds like a very biased sample. I am not an expert in the field but that seems like a pretty bad starting point.
lol, you can tell which players don’t want surveys. Might burst their bubble.

Which players are those, pray tell? lol
I’d love to see more surveys. I don’t think the results of those surveys would show what you think they’d show.

Watch and see lol. You’re not quite in that camp, sorta on the fringe.
yeah in game, or emailed surveys would be good. I have found in any other MMO that the general feeling about the game in the forums is the exact opposite of the general feeling of the players in the game.
I believe that the kinds of questions, and indeed the accompanying ‘radio button’ answers you’d need to select from, would remove any vagueness as concerns “general feelings”.
put surveys into either the launcher, or send us a survey via mail in-game, that we can either click a choice on or delete if we feel like it. I hate when people say this and that without statistics, but we’re all stuck in the same situation here – statistics are badly needed.
Predicted survey results:
15% of players want the open world to be harder.
15% of players want the open world to be easier.
60% of the players think the open world over all is fine but needs to be tweaked in a couple of places.
10% of the players don’t know what the open world means.
15% of the people want warriors to be nerfed.
15% of the people want warriors to be buffed
60% of the people want warriors to be beaten, stabbed and trampled.
10% of the people didn’t know there were warriors in the game.
Etc.. lol
A comeback of the beta survey boxes would be awesome.
The system already exists and it just pops up in the game so you would get the people actually playing the content doing the survey.
I would love to do some surveys and give my feeling of certain aspects of the game! I think it would be a great way to gain some input from the playerbase. Maybe even entice players with a small reward, like a few gems or something.
No gems. No one needs to be rewarded for giving their opinion. Also, I could envision those who only want the gems to just click the first answer in every box, or something else totally random.
I could also see forum threads saying: Get these survey pop-ups off my UI. Too much clutter. Lol. Or, stop sending me emails…I’ve seen that one a few times in Accounts.

maybe give a choice in game then “do you want to receive surveys via in game mail?” “yes” or “no”.
Still doing surveys on the forums is kind of pointless because of how little of us there is here and doing a survey in game would provide the best results.
And about the rewards – they could always hand out a “secret” reward for people that were doing the surveys for months. That way nobody would know that it’s coming, so the results of the survey would be fair. IT could enrage some people, but hell, beta testers got some vanity rewards and nobody complained.

I am not against surveys, I take them all the time as I’m just that kind of person. Just predicting the response to said surveys, having visited these forums for the last 8 months or so. Lol.
Nothing is ‘secret’ in this game for long, once occuring it is placed in the wiki almost immediately. Also, if it is ‘secret’, that sort of defeats the purpose of enticing people to take the survey.
I’d say send one e-mail letting people know there are surveys being conducted via the forums.
If they don’t use the forums. Then that’s their problem.
E-mail surveys are just too inefficient for ANet to bother with.

The forum, in my opinion, doesn’t represent a true cross section of what players who play the game actually want. It represents a subsection of die hard fans, because many casual players, who enjoy the game, won’t have a say if they don’t go to forums.
I know a lot of people who really like the game and don’t come to forums because they’re so negative. Some of them play every day. Should those people not have a say, because they choose to play and not come here to argue about stuff?

Too bad. If they want a say. Forums are the place to say it.
It’s like putting up a suggestion box at the end of a hallway and people complain in the most obnoxious hipster voice you can think of. “It’s too far too walk. You’re not catering to our needs. Hand deliver the suggestion boxes to us or we won’t tell you what we want.”
I’d rather Anet not waste their time on those not making an effort to contribute.

If ArenaNet were begging us to take their surveys, then we could dictate where they would be found. As it is, it seems some of the populace are asking for surveys, so suggestions to make them more accessible or otherwise enticing would only help the cause, and perhaps show the devs what a great idea it would be.

thats the way they should send surveys. make it so everyone could fill it out if they wanted otherwise delete the mail or ignore it. and yes some reward or incemtive wouldnt be bad for our time otherwise some may not even do it. it doesnt have to be a lot but enough for our time of doing survey
Years ago when I played Aion, they had ingame surveys every so often and these worked very well. I don’t think email surveys would be accurate at all, I’d imagine too many people who don’t play anymore not giving correct answers or whatever. It’s the playing population that should be polled.
I’d say send one e-mail letting people know there are surveys being conducted via the forums.

So people shouldn’t be polled, unless they vote? Not quite how polling works you know. And getting an answer of what a small percentage of players want isn’t particularly beneficial to the game.
If you bought a box, you should be in the survey. There could be a thousand reasons why someone isn’t playing currently, from just not liking the game, rl issues, or random attack by rabid finger eating miniature hirsute bovines. And what if you don’t log in on the day of the survey? SOL. Just email the surveys, or have it on site somewhere and announce by email and in game.
I have played a couple of games that did ingame surveys. It did not make a noticeable difference in anger levels on forums and not much difference in my play habits. All that happened was people complained that the survey did not cover the ‘right’ things. They complained that they believed something but the survey allowed people who did not agree with this to vote which is obviously wrong. And the list goes on. They get more and better data by looking at what people actually do in game rather than what people say everyone does in game.

According to this logic then COF p1 is the best dungeon ever designed, they should remove all the other races besides humans because everyone likes them better, berserker is the best armor set and they shouldn’t do anything about the other sets, warriors and mesmers have zero bugs because they are used so often, and they should only have designed a game featuring world event chests cause that’s what the majority do, everyone loves ascended and never had a problem with it because the majority in game are trying to get it, agony should be in all parts of the game because fractals are popular, and on and on and on and on.
Metrics are only good for certain things and are prone to viewer bias. Actual feedback from players, paired with metrics is a much more reliable tool than either alone.
I said it provided the best data. I said nothing about how these data where interpreted. That is up to the company. If they do a bad job of it they do a bad job and I find a new game. People not coming into the game to match those leaving is a pretty good indication that something is seriously wrong. It should not come to that stage but it has in the past and will in the future. I have no doubt this game is not at that stage, and hope it continues to avoid it.

Big Time Yes!
See this is the trouble I reported earlier. On sub only titles there’s a survey system that goes directly to the devs to let them know “this is why I’m leaving” they don’t have one of those here to help them understand the problems players face and It’s obvious no one is reading these forums or there would be more focus in these areas people would like to have taken care of.
That kind of thing is needed here despirately.
Watch this for a reason to be hesitant at using survey’s. Old but still valid.
Agreed with OP.
Gunners Hold
Voluntary feedback is most often provided by individuals that are either very happy or very unhappy, more so the later. The individuals that are in the middle, say content, often don’t take the time to complete surveys and this is usually the majority of the population. This is why you often see surveys that offer a chance to win ‘X’ if you compete them. They are trying to get a better sample of all customers. A good example of this is Best Buy which often offers a chance at a reward to complete their survey.
Think about all the times you have purchased a product or service such as a hotel and there are survey cards. Most people don’t bother with them unless they were very unhappy or loved it. I feel that a lot of people that don’t have much to say about GW2 would just shrug it off.
This forum is sort of like a living survey created by the players. If you look most threads are complaints but the population of people posting is small compared to the overall population of players. Most people that stand in the middle simply don’t feel the need to take the time to participate.
Survey who? Emails or these forums because there is a major different in point of views for the ppl who use these forums often and that of who plays the game.
Both.
Where dose the money and the ability come from to do this?
Also how do you world your question how do you deal with ppl who want these surveys just to borderland troll the game (there are at least 1 mil wow players who love the fact there are ppl in GW2 who are not happy and would do any thing to take the game down) how do you deal with ppl whom views are on the extremes?
The thing is ppl who tend to ask for surveys feel as if there views are not being looked at when it comes to how the game or realty any thing in life changes.

Surveys are widely used in business as well as federal and psychological information gathering. For hundreds of years they have been used to get an idea of what people think about certain things. Yes there is biased information, that is where the psychology comes in. You simply need to know that some people will chose the lesser options just to try and bring down the idea. But if the overall community is mostly positive that says something, it says a lot. The money and ability to do this is there, Arenanet and NCsoft have plenty of money. In fact NCsoft used to conduct, and still does make in game surveys so the technology and want is already there for the main company. The fact is that people in the game will have to log in to answer, people who are on forums will have to answer if they want to be heard. Discounting forum people just because some have left, want to troll the game, or are just angry little children takes away from the purpose. Because in creating unbiased surveys we cannot be biased against those who have left or felt unhappy about the game. In fact those people are just as important, because not every person who left was some childish attention monger, they might be able to give reasons why they left as well.

I would gladly take a survey that offers no rewards other than knowing I’d have a positive impact on a game I thoroughly enjoy.
You might get a better representation of us players and what we want.
As has been said, if they DO put surveys in, they should be in game.
If it’s on the forum the only thing we’ll discover is that warriors all think they’re too weak, thieves all think they need more stealth, ele’s are still kitten ed that bunker is the only spec worthwhile, and rangers want to be able to play without a pet.
(taken from the page 1 of each of the profession forums)
The forums are a bad place to make game decisions, because the only people here are either; like me, agitating for changes to some things (ele staff and ranger longbow) or are complaining that a whole class needs to be nerfed because they couldn’t beat them 1v1 with their face on the keyboard.
We’re a small cross section, and far and away the most negative cross section available. Not a good way to get feedback.
The beta box feedback would be far better, imo.

I would too. The last one they gave us really didn’t do it justice. We need a more direct line because the liaisons aren’t really helping i don’t think either that or there’s way too much that needs to get to the devs and management that just isn’t getting there. Not sure why.
