I’m sure you are aware that a lot of people are wondering why this 10.000 drinks achievement is so out of sync with the rest of the collection.

Like them I’m still at that stage where I have to decide to either go for it (and probably lose quite some gold in the end) or just give it up and sell everything.

What everyone is curious about now, beside hoping for a not likely to happen change, is how long Wintersday will actually remain and if it will be able to continue after Wintersday or during next Wintersday.

To put is into prspective: I’m someone playing more than the average gamer, but I’m far from grinding five repeatable minigames for hours without end… it is mentally and physically exhausting. I did now invest a lot of time this two days (last evenings and this whole european day) and I’m still under 1k (even with all the achievement bonuses). If we calculate that up it would take me about 20 days of (for me) heavy grind.. and I’m completely ignoring all the holidays coming up.

It would really help and a lot of people would really appreciate if we got a bit more information on this one.

PS: Pls reduce to 5k drinks!

you might have to buy some. but its day 2 of the event. many people will see the drinks, not care for the achieve, sell the drinks

as many people do this, the supply of drinks will go up, the price of dem will go down, and then you will be able to easily buy the amount you are missing.

n other werds, keep playing, you’ll prob get there sooner than u think, as long as u didn’t think it was going to be yesterday

That is what I’m hoping for but certain answers still would be usefull, no matter what you intend to do with Wintersday.

Still a new “holiday-skin”, that emphasise the season of gifts and christmasspirit, leaves a bit of a sour taste in ones mouth if you have to go “well.. let’s see how much is possible in all the time I can spare during holidays and after that… TP to the rescue!”

To some of us even buying them is impossible. I simply dont have the gold required to do that. I would be willing to work on the shoulders just as everyone else. I don’t care if it takes me more time than your average players but I’m still willing to do it.

What bothers me is that it might be time gated. I can only work on the shoulders RIGHT NOW which is impossible, because you know, holidays.

The amount required isn’t the problem. I’m fine with that.

you spend time to get it, time is monies. or you don’t have the time to get it, so you just spend the monies. or you mix n match so that u can get it.

truth, but since its an achieve, i think u can likely continue to work for it even after the event. the loot wont be dropping anymore, but chances are there will remain enough in the tp that you can game and make monies and buy up wat u didn’t earn during the season

so as long as u unlock the achieve, and do all the time limited achieves (jp, sno fight, etc) and all u have left to do is drank up, then u should be ok to complete it later on too

unless they literally lock out the achieve after the winter event ends, in which case, i’ll agree that its annoying to an extent. but i still think do able durin the holiday. the event will last and i think prices will come down

Since it’s part of the collection achievement, I say it’s very much intended.

An artificial gold sink, just worse than Nightfury: Make players pay sh|tloads of gold to buy crap they otherwise wouldn’t buy.
Thus remove gold from players, thus increase gems>gold convertes thus increase gem purchase.

Of course, if they “fix” this, I’ll gladly state something completely different.

The achievement itself could have been scaled down to 2500 drinks, then have additional achievements spread out across the other winter-themed maps. We have 5 winter-themed maps, and only 1 we need to venture on to wipe out a world boss 3 times.

IMO anyway, it makes more sense to have achievements linked to these maps, rather than going back to Silverwastes to chest farm for gold for all the drinks.

Now that I’ve finished all the achievements aside from the actual drink achievement itself, I see the amount of gifts roughly coming in. It would take no less than about 8hrs a day of pure gift farming these events to get the amount of drinks. It’s just quicker to go to Silverwastes.

Yeah, this is the only thing I arrived at. Cause otherwise its just not logical.

3x of this, ok… 3x of that, ok… 10,000x random item that every player in the game who wants the shoulders will be going after at the same time which must be done before they remove the wintersday achievements that give the collection items.

…wait, What? o.O

Between this and the jump puzzle I’m probably going to just start selling my gifts to pay for future legendary. That 10K drinks totals 700-1,000 gold currently on the TP anyway.

If we were explicitly told that, I might understand the cost, but that’s a mighty large assumption for the best case scenario. There just isn’t any reason to think that’ll happen, other than wishful thinking.

This 10k drink requirement is really bumming me out. I love Wintersday, and I love this skin, but I’m not spending all of the real-world holiday season running the jumping puzzle for it. (And I like the jumping puzzle!)

I’m still hoping the price will go down eventually, so I can buy drinks if I can’t earn them through presents, but I’m not paying 600+ gold for this skin. It’s just too much.

They could add chef recipes to make the booze so that they aren’t on a time limited supply. I had a recipe drop already for a winter recipe, I think it was a peppermint cake or something like that. Booze recipes would still encourage us to work hard but without sacrificing our families and real lives and jobs, we can get a good boost now while its on and later work on cooking up the rest of the brew.

Off the top of my head I can’t remember what the drinks are but we have ingredients such as mint, herbs, fruits, sugar, kegs, spices, yeast, so we should be able to brew booze.

Well, ofc you’d get all the beverage for free.
I don’t expect you have so much time to grind this for the duration of Wintersday, nor do I think you can endure it. (Most couldn’t. 60 hrs of JP or 100 hrs of Choir Bell in 3~4 weeks is beyond ridiculous)

Hint of making “fun” design and objective:

Make your own Devs do it. If they can finish it without any complaint and have fun while doing it, you have your design right. If they give-up half-way or think there’s no point, you have your design atrociously wrong.

a lot of people compare the ( Incorrigible Ale-Hound) (http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Drunkard) with this achievement but in guild wars you haven’t 30 days to farm the title… after that 30 days gifts will no longer be farmable so the prices will go up and up… and it’s christmas some of us have real life and can’t farm 15h/day…

in every event (halloween, xmas, etc) Guild Wars 2 fails Guild Wars 1 players… where is the spirit of you can do everything in the game?
where is the spirit of casual players can follow hardcore players?

now you can get why a lot of Guild Wars 1 Players disappointed with Guild Wars 2…

First off, thanks Gaile.

I always appreciate your time and effort to get the players answers to questions. And I know you can see how frustrating it is for some, but not an issue for others; all based on how you play the game we all apparently love…I mean…we’re still here…and still trying to communicate instead of just throwing up our hands and walking away.

I am one of those players who doesn’t mind playing to get a reward, but as a casual player, the 10K requirement is almost unattainable. At least not in a single year for a player like myself. I’m not swimming in Gold to just buy the drinks. I play 1-3 hours when I can, but life keeps me busy(being a dad, coach of a High School Archery Team, looking after my mom who just had back surgery, etc.), so I may only get to play 2-3 times a week.

I have many of the materials for the essences and the like, and I feel the achievements like doing the JP 3x and such are doable…its just the 10K drinks behind what appears to be, at this time, a time wall.

I am also one who, if the achievement carried over, would have no problem getting my gift each day from my Wintersday Tree in my home instance and keep working on the drinking portion all the way through to next year if need be…or the year after that. AT that point, 10K drinks is just a time investment…and I am patient. I’m not a Violet Beauregarde…and I don’t HAVE to have it NOW.

So thanks again Gaile…the sooner we can get some info and clarification, I think the sooner some will be able to enjoy Wintersday and not look at it as a grindfest…which is something GW2 never wanted to be.

I do because I can
I can because I want to
I want to because you said I couldn’t

I was going to make a new thread but Ill add the other thing to this discussion.

First, I opened my personal gift this morning and it was so nice. An emperial fragment and some really beautiful, nice and useful food treats (the ugly knitwear last year totally sucked and you know it). This year you made me smile, GW2. We don’t tell you enough when stuff makes us happy, even small stuff like this.

Second, about the mini games in the Wintersday event. You guys really need to give deep thought to some of the things you do. Wintersday should be a very happy time and relaxed. Trying to get the jumping puzzle is all the stress we need, especially while so many of us still have Heart of Thorns stressing us already. Give us some games that are really fun, not just running around killing and dying.

Why not be generous and please us every day with the things that cost you nothing—presents and fun games that don’t end up in a farming chore. It’s the happiest holiday for goodness sake.

I appreciate the good things, yes. Thank you. But sometimes it looks like the bottom line has taken GW2 over. Maybe get rid of the grench that runs your economy and put some nice stuff in monster chests instead of the TP.

You know what would be totally fantastic for next Wintersday (or omg if you could work it in for this one!) THE SUPER ADVENTURE BOX WOULD FIT IN TOTALLY PERFECTLY FOR WINTERSDAY!!!!!! Wow!! did I just have an truly magnificent idea? Yes, I think I did.

Or next Wintersday a grand opening of the Polymock arena!!!! I just know it’s going to blow our minds. Give it to us!!! Remember Polymock in GW? The rewards were some really fantastic NPC helpers. Wow!!

Gaile, I remember when you were a frog and the GW2 people danced around the Wintersday tree as elves. Don’t you miss it too? The noobs who have since come to GW2 need to get a taste of real generosity. It happens to be fun!!! If you are with us, then be with us. You need a visit from the Ghost of Christmas Past.

Thanks Gaile, but good luck. This one is a little different compared to GW1. For this one we only have a limited amount of time to obtain an ungodly amount of specific seasonal drinks that have a chance at dropping from a specific seasonal box. As such 10k drinks feels very over the top; especially compared to the other prerequisites that just have you do something or kill something 3 times.

2500 seasonal drinks consumed would have been a lot but doable, 10000 drinks simply is not and a clear indication that ANet just wants me to forget the holiday cheer and just fork over cash for gold. And I do not intend to spend $100 of my Christmas holiday funds on gems for an online game just to get enough drinks from the TP so I can complete a collection that already cost me 3g just to unlock.

So please give the person who came up with this 10000 requirement a nice bag of salt as he does not deserve a present this year.

I also think that this a bit too hard achievement for a seasonal achi. It requires either a lot of time or a lot of gold, something that everyone doesn’t have. Of course not all content in a MMO game can be achievable to all players, there has to be stuff that are really really hard so that the hc players have stuff to grind. But this is a seasonal event (and a christmas event none the less, time when many people can’t grind a game 24/7), it should be doable to everyone, the point of the season events should be fun not furstrating.

It would be reasonable to lower the demands or guarantee that the achi stays after wintersday.

Just want to help clarify a couple things for you Hauru:
1. Drinking achieve is not needed for meta. Complete 18 of 23(I think it is), and meta is done.
2. I believe the repeatable achieves DO count, up to a certain number of times.
I got that from Dulfy’s notes:
Meta achievement: Seasoned Toymaker
You only need to do 18 of the 23 achievements listed below the meta achievement requirement to complete this meta. The story achievement Grawnk Munch count for the meta but the achievement Generous Harvest does not. Unlike last year, the repeatable achievement also counts toward the meta but you can ignore them or do them if you prefer an activity (you won’t see checkmarks on the repeatable achievements under the meta but they do count towards it).

I do because I can
I can because I want to
I want to because you said I couldn’t

I beg your pardon? We were able to complete these titles over YEARS of playing Guild Wars 1.
Eastern, Wintersday, Talk like a Pirate, Chinese New Year, Wintersday in Summer.. you name it.

All of them dropped items for said titles.

To highlight the differences:

- Title will be locked away after the event so we have to redo it all over again next year?!
- 2-4weeks compared to ~7 Years…
- impossible to complete without TP (24/7 grind might work?)

Also being drunk in Guild Wars 1 gave you “anti knock down” with our beloved dwarven stabilty! It was totally worth it being a virtual alcoholic in FoW, UW, Dungeons (you name it)!

I just want to know that the achievement will not be locked once Wintersday is over. More than likely, it will be, and that’s a bummer. Why introduce things into the game that you know by normal means would require a year to complete, by no other means than “we locked the achievement.” ~700 drinks a day is a bit excessive over a holiday season where people are always on the go. I’m definitely not a casual in this game with ~8k hours logged, and even I said “wow” when this achievement came out.

We still don’t have any definitive answer? Come on. Can’t they just admit that you HAVE to grind it all right now if it really is so? I would be fine with that. I just want an answer even if its not what I hope for.

its funny to read all these threads about how unfair the achieve for winters presence is, and then all the threads about why HoT being difficult for solo/ made for large guilds is fair and people should earn their rewards…

Almost as if they were written by different people.

Actions, not words.

After Nightfury, I didn’t expect this would be light on our pockets… 10,000 drinks (currently 8s per/21 gold per stack) costs 840 gold. Sure we can scrape off a few hundred drinks by playing, but most of us will still need to buy several thousand drinks.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who has spent over 840 gold on a skin /shrug. It actually seems a pretty fair price in comparison to Nightfury and Preserved Queen Bee.

Also the text on Masterful Toast (when looked at from Winter’s Presence collection), says it is only available during Wintersday. So for those asking, it looks like we won’t be able to work on it once Wintersday ends. Just my guess, though

Just an idea here: What if the drinking achievement were split a bit -

Drink 2500 to get the item for the skin, but drink 10,000 for the title, except the title will not be limited to “during wintersday season”.

This way, those who already drank 10k don’t lose out as well

Guys really… Can you finally stop to compare GW1 stuff to GW2? As we all should have noticed by now, GW2 is a completely different game.
Stop living in the past, that gets really annoying.

As for the drinking stuff, I already got it done. If you do some little math and keep an eye on the TP, you can easily earn 5G per stack of drinks just from buying and reselling without even moving your feet to any of the the activities, you just have to be right on time, that’s all. Buy them as long as the price is low, resell them once they’re at least 2s worth more. You can do the Giftbox poker too, afaik mf counts on these boxes, so there’s a chance of getting a rare snowman, currently worth about 30G, and some water breathers for free.

There are the usual ways too, like farming and grinding. I’m not saying 10k of drinks is okay, but I’m saying there are several ways to make money even if you have to buy them in the end. Plus, I’m quite positive the price will drop after a week or two, just to start raising before the end of Wintersday again, for the late people.
So even if you have to spend a lot of money, chances are high to be paid back in the end.

Oh did I even mention that I don’t even like the title at all? Don’t know how it’s called in English, but “Drinker of high percented” as the word-to-word-translation of the German one would be (Trinker von Hochprozentigem) sound pretty lame. Plus, I wouldn’t be proud of a title like that IRL, why should I be ingame? The Candycane one is muuuuuch better.

I am not sure that I will be able to find out the answers to your questions, Starfall, but I’ll see if the devs are able to tell me the details you’ve requested.

(As a GW veteran and official Life of the Party and Incorrigible Ale-Hound, I’m thinking about going for the beverage thing myself. )

Can confirm that Gaile is both the life of the party AND an ale-hound

So you did the JP 250 times and got the rest from achievements and karma? doing something 125-times a day is the definition of the grind that anet so hated ^^

I’ve seen this question a lot recently and can only think of one answer. With dungeon gold nerfs and the general inability to raid for most of the public, it seems they want people to buy gems and convert to gold. Especially with gift cards around the holidays.

Meh, even without the “dungeon gold debate” its still costly, thus most people will have to cough up cash for gems.

Hint of making “fun” design and objective:

Make your own Devs do it. If they can finish it without any complaint and have fun while doing it, you have your design right. If they give-up half-way or think there’s no point, you have your design atrociously wrong.

QFT. If this achievement was a life time one that’s always available that’s one thing. This achievement is ludicrous. Having it as a requirement for the shoulders is doubly so.

If it was only required for the shoulder skin then it might be acceptable, but it’s needed for the meta achi too (I am assuming that the infinite ones do not count for that).

Yes I noticed my mistake a little later and corrected my original post. Sorry about that. I still think it’s too much for a seasonal event though.
