I play a ranged class. I often find that after killing a monster, the next auto-target is NOT the monster standing next to me. In fact, the target chosen is often obstructed or above/below me where I can’t even go easily, sometimes on the floor below.

I’ve been playing 3 years and it seems this wasn’t an issue until the last year. I’ve been unable to find a pattern for the selection.

Any ideas ?

Disable auto-target, use a hotkey to select either nearest or next target instead. Not only is it what you are looking for, it is much more helpful in all game modes (PvP)

Personally I disabled it shortly after launch just because of how annoying it was, especially with movement skills :/

From what i can recall its supposed to prioritize

Legendary
Champion
Elite
Vet
Normal

After that then Closest → Furthest

That’s highly illogical. Every single mmorpg in the history of ever has made it so tab targets the closest enemy. If it wasn’t automatically preset to that, there was always an option to make it so.

Who said GW2 was logical?

Tab certainly can be set to nearest enemy, mine is set that way. Tab is normally used to cycle between enemies, which can take some time but a lot of players prefer that option.

The issue here is if you use a skill that requires a target but you don’t have one the system analyses the present state of play, decides which mob you least want to aggro, and selects that one. It seems to ignore distance, angle, already aggroed enemies and any other criteria you might think useful. You can have a dozen mobs trying to kill you and it will still select the only veteran within range you haven’t managed to hit yet.

There is an option to switch it off, which is worth doing.

It’s been like this since launch – Priority is given to the nearest Moa or other non hostile creature in a 3 map radius.

There is an option to make it so. Infact there’s several options for targetting…perhaps you know hit that f11 key and fix it for yourself ?

Its not a new issue the AI for it sucks and always has done. As others have suggested set a hotkey for nearest target. But even then in wvw you will still see the autotarget target walls/gates rather than the guy stood infront of you hitting you, or target the npc over the real player/threat.

I thought the logic was it will select anything but the critter hitting you in the face.

Those moas, man, they’re bad. Give me nightmares. Even though I keep telling myself, “Stay focused! Engage the veteran Minotaur that’s pounding away at me”, I still see that moa out of the corner of my eye, munching away on his leaves. I hate that moa. Just as soon as I kill this Minotaur, that moa’s dust! No!!! Be strong! That moa means nothing! Nothing, I swear! Do not look at the moa … must not … Dwayna help me … AHHHH!!! You’re going down moa!!!

To be fair, moas are poultry nodes and often neutral XP-bags. It’s the Six telling you the feathery nuisances are ripe for the plucking.

On topic, is it just me, or has auto-/tab-targeting logic just gone right out the window in all MMOs? I had similar issues in WoW.
