Please let us use gliders in many maps
Wouldnt they have to revisit the design of every zone to ensure that it is prepared to handle characters approaching from above?
Yep, they’d have to remake every single map to allow for that sort of 3D movement. I’d rather get new stuff.
Really, it’s for the sake of the game designer’s sanity.
If you suddenly get new travel options like gliders in areas that are not designed for it, it can open up a whole new world of bugs, glitches and explots. (Similar reasons to why Blink and Shadowstep require pathfinding. If it were only a line of sight thing, it would be really hard to avoid exploits for getting outside of the map)
So it’s just way easier to just make new maps for the glider instead of reworking ALL of the old ones to support it.
They’d ahve to completely redesing every zone, so the gliding wont break the map. They werent designed with it in mind, so i highly doubt it will happen.
Hm. Does diagonal 3d movement require that much work? I really thought it wouldn’t have that much of an effect on the map besides falling slowly..
TBH, if they can do that, it will be a awesome expansion.

Places in existing zones that players cannot currently reach would likely have been left incomplete from those angles out of player view. There would have been no reason to give them areal finish. With gliding players could see and reach incomplete sections of the map. Going back to finish existing maps for that 3d movement would likely be resource intensive.

The problem is the map is a shell. If you get at it from angles you shouldn’t, you’ll see thin edges. Or things like that building way up there on a hill? Deploy glider, approach —- and look, it’s just some random scattered columns and a 2D triangle, not a fully rendered building at all. MMO map designers use trompe l’oeil tricks, hollywood facades, and line-of-sight limits to reduce what has to actually be added.
So yeah, they’d have to re-render the whole map with a lot of new terrain that isn’t actually there right now.
Yeah, I guess that would be a problem. Whelp, at least there’s the expansion maps to look forward to.
I think I read where WoW had to rework a bunch of maps when they put flying in as many buildings were only facades, since they were only supposed to be seen from a few angles. With so many people paying $15 a month they could afford to go back and rework old maps. I doubt this game has the budget to do that.
ANet may give it to you.

Oh god yes. Yes it does.

Here, let me show you guys something. Here is what many of the game’s maps and areas might REALLY look like if you manage to get outside of where you’re supposed to be. Boxes just straight-up painted onto the wall with lots of extra empty space. This peek behind the curtain brought you by: Some stupid glitch that made me fall through the floor in Arcana Obscura.

This was the Beta mind you, but I was able to use the Glider in the SW section. I had deleted my first character and made another, who still had the mastery. Was idly gliding off the top of the fort waiting for meta event to start.
Hmm, that’s either a glitch or else they knew they’d have gliding by the time they were designing the SW map and they made it with gliding in mind. A new way to reach the floor of the Skritt cavern, maybe?

Silverwastes and Dry Top do have some verticality and might be designed for glider compatibility.
For that matter, the Maguuma Wastes might wind up being glider-enabled along with the Maguuma jungle maps. (Maybe even new wastes maps further north, post expansion)
