First there were the Buried Lost Chests in Dry Top, then the Lost Bandit Chests in Silverwastes, now the Nightmare Pods, which all require us to keep CTRL pressed at all times to be able to see their name. For the Nightmare Pods, this is especially problematic because every second of hesitation in the labyrinth could mean death and having to start over, while you also have to be ready to dodge or use skill 1 any moment.

My computer has troubles with recognizing a lot of keys pressed at once and my wrist always hurts from the strain of having to keep a key pressed constantly, just to be able to see item names in the game. I’m not sure what the benefit of this is anyway and I can’t see any reason why we shouldn’t be allowed to always see names without having to press anything. Why can’t we just get an option to turn item names (like chests, gathering nodes, etc.) on and off like player and NPC names? Then everyone could be happy with the option they prefer.

Please, please consider to remove this unnecessary complication and make life easier for everyone whose hand/wrist hurts from this, or who is just annoyed by it even without pain because it isn’t good for anything in the game.

I’m surprised this is new to people. It’s something I’ve been doing since the game started, and in other games before that (although in Dragon Age it was tab). Like anything else once I worked out keybindings that worked for me it’s not an issue.

Yeah, for me it’s not a problem with which key to bind to it either. There isn’t -any- key I’d want to press constantly, especially not for something the game should be doing by itself. CTRL is as good/bad as any other key for me. I don’t even understand the reason for why there hasn’t been an option to show object names all along, since there is one for player names, for NPC names and for enemy names.

Pressing a key doesn’t seem like a lot of work to me, and certainly not gamebreaking. Chests and nodes, etc. should be “looked for” and not handed on a silver platter IMO that is part of the fun “Finding”. I don’t understand the reasoning for “the game should be doing by itself”.

This is not about work, this is about being pain for some players (I’m not the only one and have heard of others with the same problem in their wrist or hand) and a game is supposed to be fun, which is certainly diminished by pain. And if resource nodes in this game were intended to be “looked for”, like you say, they wouldn’t have symbols on the minimap. The same is true for bandit chests and the pling they have on the minimap. It also can’t be good for anything to accidentally keep activating other game functions, like skill linking, just because the game with its original key binding would force you to press CTRL constantly.

Edit: Oh, and if you still want that fun of finding, like you call it, you could always deactivate the suggested option to show object names.

I just run to a central area then press it, the range is pretty big. Also sometimes you can just see them if you look carefully.

At least until other options are availlable.

How about under F11 they add an option to enable a ‘Ctrl highlighting always on’ so you can turn it on or off permanently depending on where you are in the game world?

E.g. in Dry Top / Silverwastes, I’d switch it on to see all those items, and disable it elsewhere.

While we’re at it, I’d like to be able to see the objects through walls while holding down ctrl like you could in gw1. It’s the one thing from gw1 that I really missed when going back to gw2.

Personally i remapped that function to “Q” years ago. I run with “W” mostly and then
thats the best solution for me.

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.

Work-around: Here is a simple, low tech, unobtrusive work-around for you.
Required: Scotch Tape, 1 piece 4 inches long
Process:

  1. Hold down Ctrl Key
  2. Stick tape on key and around side and bottom of keyboard

This is a bit better then putting a weight on the key as it does not get in your way during game play.

I tested it early and no it doesn’t. I have a g15 that i could possible program though. I’m not all that bothered by it, but i can see how some people would be.

I’m surprised you are the only one who has said this, as it makes perfect sense.

I’d vote for them completing remove the ability to locate items using the ctrl key before making it so you can toggle it myself. Then people would actually need to search for something instead of having it highlighted on the screen.

Michael Walker, I just tried your solution with the Caps Lock key but it does not work for me. Imho the Caps Lock key does not toggle the Shift key if the application does not support it.

Did you remap the Ctrl key function to the Caps Lock key function, as I’m pretty certain that’s what Michael was talking about when he said to use Caps Lock…you do know you an remap any key to any other key don’t you?

As for those experiencing wrist/hand pain, this is most likely, but not in all cases caused by improper keyboard/hand positioning(though this does not apply to those that suffer from Carpal Tunnel as that can be caused by a different condition). I never experience any pain in my hand or wrist when constantly holding down the Ctrl key, but then I don’t hold it down all the time either, just when I want to look for something(don’t even bother in the Lab, would rather keep my eye on the Lum.

I seriously have it remapped for something else. Learning where the chest spawn locations are, watching other players, using simple sight or more often my mouse cursor I have little issue in finding anything even at great distance. Since I often rely on my mouse cursor for ground targeting and/or selecting targets it is never too far away. Also, my friends and I often target and call out chests when we are grouped.

I concur with the others that “hidden” or “buried” chests should take a little bit of effort to find.

I feel ya, OP. I find myself doing it in WoW all the time (along with pressing F to loot, which totally doesn’t work). It’d be nice if there were a command to toggle it on/off.

The flower pods are on the mini-map as little orange gears, the Luminescent Wolves are on the mini-map as red creatures, your character is on the mini-map…it’s highly conceivable to follow the flow of the map, your character, the pods and wolves just by looking at the mini-map(not saying you should play that way, but it is a tool to use for navigation)…the only thing not on the mini-map are the mini-chests.

I actually swapped my Ctrl and Alt button functionalities because constantly pressing/holding Ctrl was hurting my pinky.

Just to clarify, I meant remapping Caps Lock, not remapping “show stuff” to shift.

However, I play on the mac beta and it works just fine, started up parallels to try on a somewhat native windows and it doesn’t work there anymore, my bad :/

Personally, I think the chests, and other objects, should not be so easily highlighted. I like a sense of discovery with things like that, but holding ctrl removes that completely, so I do not use it.

I am all for having an option to always show objects, but I would rather have something more interesting. I had an idea on how to make object discovery a little more active and at the same time incorporate it into the mastery system. My idea is as follows:

While holding the right mouse button (to look around), there will be an invisible circle in the center of your screen (which could be increased in size by some mastery). Within this circle is your character’s object detection area. All objects within this circle will have their name automatically visible. And to add another element to this (which again could be improved by a mastery) there could be a range aspect as well. So object names will only become visible when they are both in range AND in the detection circle.

While not holding right click on the mouse, this circle will center on your pointer, allowing you to search the whole screen with you mouse. There could be a toggle to make the circle either follow your pointer or remain in the center of the screen.

I think the circle would have to be large enough to not make object discovery frustrating (it would have to be easy in normal (clear) conditions), while allowing some room for a small improvement through the masteries system.

Simplicity is complex.

Good feedback is key to getting the developers to listen to you.

Rebind it to one of the F# keys and change the functionality of that key to that of a toggle. Most keyboard/macro software can do it. Simply send a key down without the up.

ArenaNet doesn’t care about what makes peoples’ hands or wrists hurt. I have RSI, and it is flared up daily by this game (especially loot bags and the horrible process of selling my collectibles on the TP at anything other than instant sell value).

They have done absolutely nothing to curve this, ever. Nor anything to help remedy any other health problem (poor UI organization, no high contrast, etc.).

I used to respect them alot but their continued ignorance of disabilities and just how stressful their game is on the hands has seriously irritated me for a long time now and made me stop buying gems about half a year ago. I farm gold to convert to gems instead, that way I at least have some kind of benefit from my pain.
