ANet, can you provide any guidance on how much of PoF will be pre-downloaded versus downloaded the day of release? Some of us are on metered internet connections and this would help to determine where we might need to be that day in order to download data files using an alternate internet connection. Any information that can be provided would be appreciated. I am really hoping we have been getting a majority of the downloads as we go but don’t want to assume.

Last time it was about an hour before release.

I would like to think that we got the bulk of it with the demo weekend?

We already know we didn’t. The current minimum specs require 50gb of space…I think it was Gaile that said that is what PoF would take us up to (looking for that link).

Currently, the .dat file is only up to 35gb, meaning there is about 15gb worth of updates at launch if that is correct.

There’s going to be several more updates between now and the 22nd. The actual final patch will probably occur sometime before then, but I doubt ANet could make any promises to us about when the last patch will roll. Plus, I’m sure there will be 1-5 patches in the first few days. A lot of stuff can get tested, but we players are too clever and we’ll find all sorts of ways to break stuff.

So do your best to find an unmetered connection that you can use 1-2 hrs before launch and something similar for the weekend if possible.

Hop onto someone’s wifi an hour or so before it goes live. This is when they’ll likely do the pre-release of the game files. It won’t be sooner to prevent spoilers and economy reasons.

I doubt it will encompass the full 50GB, as with both Core and HoT, the recommended specs allowed for data over the coming years.

Most carriers have an option to buy an extra allotment of data for the month at a more reasonable cost. Around me the ISPs offer unlimited data for the month for $30 (for context, base service charge is $50 with 1TB data cap). If you have no other option it’s a lot better than paying overage fees if your data cap is really tight.

You could also go to a friend’s place with a portable HDD or USB stick and copy the .dat file. Your exe should recognize it and any further download should be fairly small.

I think that’s the OP’s original plan. The question they have is: when should they be at their friend’s? I think they were hoping to pick up as much of the patch as possible on the Tue or Wed before launch.
