What is the point of having a chat filter if Anet suspends players for spelling profanity correctly? I’ve heard many firsthand accounts of this happening to players and I see them end up still using profanity but bypassing the chat filter by spelling profane words incorrectly. Doesn’t the original enforcement method in Guild Wars make much more sense?

Like a bullet proof vest, the point of the chat filter is to mitigate the damage when profanity is used.

And, as it is still illegal to shoot someone who’s wearing a bullet proof vest, it’s still against the rules to swear at someone who has the chat filter up.

“Go kitten yourself you kitten kitten piece of kitten sucking kitten” is just as insulting to some as it is with the actual swear words.

The human brain fills in the naughty words automatically.

I’m think banning mostly happens to those who use profanity directly..not so much indirectly. I may be wrong.

The filter is there as a last line of defence for people who don’t want to see profanity; it’s not a licence to spew offensive language. If you don’t want a ban, don’t use offensive language in public chat channels, whether spelled correctly or not. And if you can’t speak without profanity, or can’t figure out what is going to be offensive to other people before you say it… learn. You’re going to have real problems getting through adult life if you don’t.

As noted, it’s there to stem the tide when someone decides they’re going to break the rules. It’s not a free license to say what you want.
