Any chance you put it on with Black/ish armor?

Try it with some other colors and see if you get a reaction.

Plus, make sure you have post processing turned on.

What are some cool uses for this item?

I was pretty disappointed by the effect when I tried equipping the item the other day. (It just seems to make my character harder to see.)

I recall when Balthazar’s Outfit came out there was a Charr in DR wearing the outfit and the black refractor for a pretty cool effect.

I was lucky enough to get a black refractor in a ToT bag last week (my one major drop ever from a ToT bag, in three years of Halloweening in Tyria). I wore it a little bit to test the effect, then extracted it and sold it, because the best use I had for it was to go to my Endless Batwing Brew fund. It pretty much just turned me into featureless dark silhouette form.

ETA: My thief doesn’t look too good with it- but if you really build a character around it it looks awesome – like some necros, f.e.

As for cool uses, I guess if you like color variation options then trying it with many different dye color options would be cool. I don’t have the Black one myself, I only have the Orange one which I like the best out of the three.

can anyone confirm if the stats of the item will erase the stats on the item that you apply this to? So if I put this on an ascended amulet, I will end up with crappier stats?

You can’t put it in an ascended amulet. No upgrade slot for that kind of component.

ascended trinkets dont have an upgrade slot, just an infusion slot, so you have to apply it to an exotic anyways.
