I realize Arena Net will most likely never act solely on the feedback given in this forum as it is by no means a fair representation of the entire player base of gw2. The forum only represents a small percentage of the player base, and normally, a pretty kitten off one. However, I do believe that there has to be some way to accurately poll a fairly good representation of the player base, in the hopes of gaining a relatively accurate opinion.

Im not filled with near as much animosity as some people about the addition of ascended gear but I can’t say I wasn’t a little disappointed by it. I signed up for this game because I believed the entire premise of the game was that there would be no more vertical progression, which sounded so refreshing after all the other lame MMO’s. I feel a little cheated realizing now that I was wrong. I realize that Arena Net didn’t exactly lie to us by saying that there would never be Vertical Progression, but it was certainly not published very well that we would have it and already so early into the game.

I feel that this move towards vertical progression, although a slight one, is still too big of a deal to put into place without at least a poll that would be available to all parties. I don’t see how we couldn’t possibly combine a forum poll with an in game poll, much like the ones we had in the beta weekends asking us what we thought of the content such as the starter bosses and spvp maps. Keeping the polls up for maybe 1-2 weeks, allowing each person enough time to vote once either on the forum or in game (due to the fact that many users on the forum no longer play the game because of fotm and ascended gear) on whether they want vertical progression should give a relatively accurate estimation of the feelings of the entire player base.

What do you all think? Pointing out faults in my theory and suggesting alternatives would be much appreciated.

And I apologize if there are already to many threads like this, or if I broke some rules by posting this, I just felt I needed to get my point across. feel free to lock it if it is unworthy.

BTW, as you may be able to see, I am personally not a huge fan of vertical progression, but I would be ok with it as long as that is what the majority of the player base wants. I just feel the players deserve more of a say, even though I am aware we have no right to it.

TLDR:

In hindsight it’s still difficult to determine what was hype and what were statements actually made by Arenanet. My understanding was that there wouldn’t be an emphasis on vertical progression, but it’d be more than possible to prove me wrong. I believe the current sentiment on the matter is vertical progression will be gradual but not extreme and not enough to lock players out of content. That being said, I’m okay with it. Vertical progression is really only a problem once content becomes available only to a select group of people, and the way things are now we could actually use a difficulty spike if anything.

To be honest, I’d challenge the notion that Ascended Gear in its current form is really a detrimental form of vertical progression. Rings are incredibly easy to come by and require only a maximum of 20 runs to acquire, and only lock players out of content if they’re a) playing fotm and b) not acquiring infusions. For most people in the upper fotm levels, this isn’t really the case. What’s more is that the current methodology of acquiring Ascended gear is going to change very soon and become infinitely more accessible through crafting and the removal of the party limit. Unless the system undergoes a severe change, there doesn’t seem anything to be worried about.

I like a “small” vertical progression!
Exotic still competitive!
You will not die with just one hit to a legendary!

Several games in the past have had forced polls at login, and I absolutely loved the idea. No more arguments of “vocal minority vs vocal majority”. You knew who the majority was and who the minority was.

Unfortunately, the vocal minority wants to hold as tightly as possible to their grip, so every time this gets brought up you have one or two people scream, rage and cry that they’ll quit if everyone in the game is given the chance to vote equally, and not just forum dwellers.

Because that would obviously be the worst thing ever.

I actually agree, let’s have a poll and find out just how people feel about Vertical Progression. If the poll were to show that people are okay with it, I’d just have to deal. But I think the truth of the matter is that many people know precisely how such a poll would really turn out, which is why they won’t do it.

Remember when our developers talked about “strengthening the core game”?
How’d that work out for us so far?
Now let’s try some ideas that will really work.

I don’t care. They need to have something to keep farmers interested in the game. I’d prefer it be cool-looking armor and weapons than anything else.

I don’t care what you thought anet said, anyone with a brain could see from the start that gw2 was a hybrid between gw1 and traditional mmo’s.

The level cap at 80 rather than 20 is your first clue.

LMAO!!

That’s right! Who cares what they said! You should have known what they were thinking! It’s your own faults for not even using half your psychic brain powers!

Gah, the nerve of some people. Don’t even bother to read minds before coming and complaining about a game.

=D
