Possible Own Item Creation?

I was just thinking, personally I love guild wars in a lot of way and the only thing that ever really found lacking was the amount of different costumes or armor ect. So here is what I thought of, I also play Dota 2 occasionally maybe a game here and there and I know that they allow items and costumes to be created for their hero’s, it got me thinking because I can’t possible be alone on this when I say that there just isn’t enough different armors out there, not stats wise but just ascetically, personally I can think of several ideas off the top of my head that I would love to see created as actually “skins” if you want to call them that and I’m sure others are the same so here’s my question.

What if Guild wars 2 had a item creation option?

It could be just like what Dota has done and set certain guidelines for the items itself, people create whatever is on their minds in programs like Blender or other programs and color in Photoshop or any other. It can even be just skins, since the wardrobe has been added it’s perfect for it, there could be a tab just like the Black Lion Trading post but instead it’s the communities work, people can upload the items that are passed by the folks at Anet and can end up being for sale so you don’t have to buy the entire set it you have the option to buy the one piece like gloves, shoulders, back, head or whatever! I would think if this option was actually implemented into the game it would increase a lot of community activity even though I’m sure there is a lot already it would just drive more people to want to play and really let Guild wars just grow bigger and larger.

The parts itself can be set to cost a certain amount by the creator him/herself in gold/silver/copper or just make it 100 gems per piece or the full set 800 just like the stuff in the Store that Anet release themselves. With an option for designers to actual add their creations into the game it would make a lot more of variety in the game plus just another thing that won’t run out as long as people are creative, I don’t find a way the guys at Anet would possible lose from a option like this I mean there would be so much more content in the game and more things that actual people would want to buy with gems, In the end the clothes will be set by their guidelines whether it’s specifications in those guidelines to even lore if they wanted to plus they would profit off it and so would the community by more diversity in game and might even end up clinging people on longer instead of taking a break or moving on to another game.

To wrap things up I don’t know the things that would be required to actually set up something like this and it’s not exactly easy I’m sure but what Valve has done and the way the Steam workshop is behind them I don’t see why Anet can’t do something along the lines since in the end…….a option like this has a lot of promise.

Living story plus It’s own workshop in game in a one off payment MMO? Be revolutionary for the free to play industry

This is only possible if the MMO supports streaming updates (meaning the game will update as you play, no need to restart the client to see new content), which GW2 does not; even if it did, allowing the community the ability to publish content freely creates massive server loads and connectivity issues, not to mention absolutely juvenile and/or stolen content popping up everywhere (do you really want GW2 to become Second Life?).

There was another thread where someone mentioned SOE started a user submission program, where you can create something, upload it to SOE, and let them decide whether or not it’s appropriate to go into the game; however it’s unlikely even that would happen because the chances of someone sneaking in a model that they stole from another game/modder are fairly high and it’s impossible for a moderator to catch them all, so that just exposes ANet to legal liabilities.

Can understand the legal issues that come along with that but would that really be a problem if there’s maybe a few people from Anet taking the time and dealing with checking each possible piece of armor that comes out and doing a extensive review on them before they’re aloud to be added? if they constantly monitor the submissions I’d think that they would be able to keep everything in order, Even the way that Dota does it is basically only the top voted and/or popular items get loaded in so there’s still enough to be extensive amount of costumes but at the same time not enough to be ripping off one another here and there.

I definitely don’t want Guild Wars to be the next second life by all means I’m a 100% against it but if they kept it in moderation and not let people go completely insane you’d think any connection issues or copyright infringements would be non existent.

Blehh wish something along these lines was even in the works or considered, would be great but I can understand your reasoning against it.

GW(1) used to have contests for player submitted art for weapons & armor concepts. Winners would see their designs incorporated in the game. There are a lot of really talented artists out there and these contests were a boon to the game. I think GW2 would benefit from these. Before GW2 launched, I’m pretty sure there was just such a contest and that’s where the ghostly Ascalonian weapons came from.

I made a suggestion like this once. Basically have Anet hold contests every month or so where players create a weapon in 3D and submit it for Anet’s review. The winner(s) get their submission added to the game in some form. They had a contest like this before launch involving armor. I don’t know who or what the winner was though.

I also had a similar suggestion where the player would be able to craft “unique” weapons out of different parts like legos. Actually it would be like the morphing weapon system from Fable 3. You could craft a sword out of any combination of:

Hilt:
- A
- B
- C

Pommel:
- 1
- 2
- 3

Blade:
- X
- Y
- Z

And the pieces would fit together in different permutations. On top of that the weapon could be named after the player.

I’d turn my weapons into massive cardboard boxes. Let the pvp experts figure out my tells from that.

Yes that would really be a problem. How could anyone check everything? Suppose I steal someone’s picture they’re working on, but they can prove it’s theirs. They haven’t published it or anything yet, it’s just someone’s school project.

That person can STILL sue Anet for using their content in the game. The amount of time and money it would take would be prohibitive and at the end of the day there’s absolutely no guarantee that checking would find it.

But there’s another issue. This world is beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. Anet controls that image. They control it completely. Take away that control and this will become second life.

Unless Anet could veto designs and do you know what kind of bad feeling that would engender among the player base?

It’s too much work for too little return.
