Possible problem with future ascended gear

The ascended gear we currently have available is all back pieces and jewelry. In non ascended sets jewelry had one upgrade slot that was used to slot a gem of whatever stat combination the user desired and was available. However with the ascended items anet did not create a second upgrade slot for the infusions meant to be attached to the items and instead re-purposed the existing upgrade slot for this role. However to compensate for what would result in a stat loss on ascended items they added what would have been the loss of stats from gems to the base stats of the item (and a little more on top).

The question that results from this is what will happen when armor and weapons are released. Their upgrade slots are used for runes and sigils respectively. If anet does not create a second upgrade slot for ascended armor and weps specific to the infusions then they risk either removing the ability to use runes and sigils for ascended armor, or force conformity where specific runes will be build into the armor sets with no ability to change them.

The reason I think this may be the case is because it may be a limitation of how they coded the way items work in this game. Granted I do not know much on the topic of programming but if anet has the ability to make a second upgrade slot for gear relatively easily then why did they not do so for the initial wave of ascended items?

It was originally suspected that this is why they started with jewellery accesories – to give them time to update the code to support two slots (they admitted they had a problem with that) before armor and weapons are introduced. On the other hand, seeing as they are limiting build options across the board, it’s entirely possible that they will just give us hardcoded rune/sigil equivalents that support only a very limited number of builds.
