So, there are (so far as I know unconfirmed) reports of an ongoing DDoS attack against GW2.

I work in an internet/tech field, and while DDoS isn’t really my department, I had a thought:

Can’t ANet just move their IP address whitelist filter to outside their auth structure? if they were to drop requests outside the IP whitelist before they even hit the servers when volume gets too high, this could help mitigate the impact of a DDoS attack. Of course, this would mean legitimate requests from players whose IP addresses had changed would be hit hard, I’d imagine this would effect a much smaller part of the player population as opposed to crashing the servers entirely.

Obviously this wouldn’t help against a DDoS against the website as anyone can access it, but at least the game servers could stay out of the line of fire.

Thoughts?

no. this is not an attack against GW2

this is an attack against Cloudface, which is a widely used backbone service. It’s one of the biggest DDoS attack.

A lot of other games and services are affected too.

It’s outside of what anet can do unfortunately.

Basically a lot of companies outsource their servers to larger companies and they DDOS the larger company and take out multiple companies at once.
