Possible solution for Character Naming
I would really like to see this. For those of us who want lore correct names it is nearly impossible to create sylvari or asura characters due to the fact every name is taken and this would finally allow people to do so. And no I wont simply use a title because I can’t take characters with titles seriously.
How would you message the correct person in game?

This, I don’t want to have to find someone’s hidden number to send a whisper.
I really don’t like the idea of having extra numbers assigned to the end of my character names. If the number was “hidden” how would we know we are whispering when we do a /whisper charactername?
I would never support this- it would enable impersonation and allow people to defraud other people.
Can you imagine trying to decipher a map chat where 3 “Arya Stark”s are talking at once?
There are other suggestions that can open up more possibilities when naming characters. E.g. allow lowercase letters to be used at the start of words, upper case letters to be used in the middle of words, having access to apostrophes ( ’ ) and hyphens ( – ).
No for 2 reasons.
1 – As pointed before, it would be harder (if possible) to send mail/whisper to other users properly.
2 – I don’t want look around and find hundreds of Legolas, Sephiroth and so on.
(and the other 8 elite specs maxed too)

You can still whisper them by using the acc name with numbers instead of the character name.
To counter the problem of whispering, just right click the person you want to whisper. Or select the person in your contact list to whisper.
In all honesty, it sounds like the solution would disadvantage and inconvenience more players than your naming suggestion would help.

I like being able to /whisper Name, I see no real problem with leaving the system as. Not having countless of the same named characters in an area, in a party, or in your guild is actually nice in my opinion.
As for adding people to contacts, I have no intention of adding people just so I can whisper them once or twice easily.

And if they’re not in the same map or on screen? What if you have multiple people with the same name in your contact list or in your guild? How confusing do you think it will be when you have 2+ people with the same name in chat?
And what about the party menu where you add the name to join or invite a player?

So now people are inconvenienced by having to find the account name and type it out with the numbers so a small percentage of players can have the same in-game name?

To little benefit for the work that would have to be put into it. Not to mention the confusion that would come about as a result.
Better solution. Get more creative with your names. They should be unique. I’ve made 20 or so key farm characters in the last week, using different names for all of them, only once did I get the pop up that the name was taken.

Even if I did say that you can whisper using acc name+nr to contact somebody ingame dosnt mean I dislike or like the idea of having number behind character name.
I just simply gave an answer to how you would message the correct person.
I don’t like the idea of there being two Tony Hannibals.
The best solution is for people to put a little more creativity and originality in their character naming. I see so many people use names from fictional works (e.g. Daenerys, Sephiroth, Goku, and many more).
In my personal opinion of this character nr thing, I don’t see it being a good idea overall because I don’t want people to use same character name as I do, since I wouldn’t feel unique about my character at all.
The point with character names is that they are supposed to be unique.
If character names wern’t unique then everybody could just simply run around with same character name and some people might find it “annoying” & also people would want to have their character names remained only for them.
As I personally have a rare one word name I’d hate this personally. It’s the name I picked for me not everyone else
If they were going to allow anyone to use whatever name, they should just drop names entirely and make them cosmetic only. Your display name would be used instead where it mattered, such as chat. As an option, you could toggle between showing character or display names above the character and by pressing ctrl/whatever, both would be shown.

But what if someone uses one of your character names to troll and discredit you, but doesn’t use the chat box? For example – going AFK during a PvP match without saying a word?
Names still matter in the open world, not just in the chat box, as that’s where we see most of player’s names anyway. I don’t want to see a character called, I dunno, Fred Strange, and run up to him, thinking it’s one of my friends, but then when I say “Hi” they go “Who are you?”

I have 2 one word names for Sylvari, and 6 more characters with unique names which are more or less lore encorporated. None of my names have any foreign characters to “make it work” either.
Leave our names alone OP!
Just had an idea and wanted to share – currently, a number is assigned to our account names, ie, Joe.12345.
What if we had a hidden number assigned to our toon names upon creation so that more than one person could share that name? That way, it would eliminate the need for special characters?
I will solve this for you .. well, partly
Let’s have nicknames for our toons that will be visible only to us. If I want to call my curvy female ranger Legolas or burly norn guard Gimli, so be it. No one else needs to see it but, I will have an option to display my nickname on the character select and profile screens where the names actually matter. Other places and other people really don’t give much of a kitten about what my name is as long as they know who is not kittening it up for them, eg, casting moa on a mob inside dungeon.
I don’t accept that it’s a problem that we can’t have two characters with the same name. This is a solution in search of a problem.

^^ This ^^ would be a nice QoL upgrade. There are lots of names that include one or more of these options. Robin du Monde; Michael O’Tamlin; Beth Haven-Grace. Not sure of the upper-case letters in the middle of words, though. However, that may be my ignorance.

I agree. I’d love to be able to see names like Mickey O’Jones, but not MiCkEy O’PwNz.
I understand that most disagree, can understand that, and noted.
No. I don’t want another person having my name.
