Possible steam release
Does steam have some incentive progamme for posting every 2 weeks in games that are not on steam?
This would not be up to Arena net but their NCSOFT overlords.

If it hasn’t happened already it’s probably never going to happen. Valve would take a cut of their profits and I don’t think they like that idea. We’d probably see a spike in population, but the only thing that matters is player retention. If numbers were to sink back down to what it was, they’d be in a bad situation with the Valve tax in that scenario.

If you just want to have gw2 launchable from your steam client with the steam overlay availiable, you can add it to your library as a “Non-Steam App” and still use most of the steam features on it.
Naturally it wouldn’t have trading cards or a workshop or those type of community features, but if you want to set up a steam group or something for your guild or whatever that’s a workable option.
On the developer end, it might actually be more trouble than it’s worth to integrate steam features into the Gw2 client. Converting the achievements to Steam ones, etc. The steam DRM and whatever security systems in the Gw2 client may not be fully compatible, etc.
Don’t expect Steam to handle patching, that’ll still be the game launcher. And the initial install will probably not be faster either.
RIP City of Heroes
GW is already on steam, which means NCSoft isn’t completely against the idea. However they probably don’t see the need at the moment to do so. Some publishers put older games on steam after they’ve already lost the surge of normal sales, kindof a last ditch effort to get players.
Either that or NCSoft didn’t like how things turned out with GW1 and decided against repeating it with GW2.
Valve takes a pretty big cut so it’s not really something you want automatically to do.
Well Steam does take a cut, so I imagine they’ve looked at it and said “nah not worth it”
valve takes per sale of a game like what 18-20% and ingame sales get taxed as well ( in a lot of cases) so Anet would loose a lot of money or have to raise all prices we currently have. So plaese no.
Valve also takes a cut off of every single transaction (cough gems for $$$ cough).
I’d imagine that being one of the major points to consider since you are giving up on a lot of money from gem sales in the long run.
Maybe that could be offset by a bigger audience, maybe not.
PS. I also love steam, just not sure GW2 will end up there for the time being. At least not before the HoT expansion has completely sold and the post expansion wait on content phase has arrived.
