Just /age checked and I’ve been playing for 12 days with my main character at 95hours and 1minute old, level 70 Engineer.
I spend most of my time exploring, in World Versus World, mastering combat and… Shopping (curse you Black Lion trading company…)
Since I’m a new player, I promised myself from the beginning I would avoid making the game overwhelming by only practicing combat, exploring and figuring out which classes I liked best. That way, I could save crafting, modding and dungeons for when I’d become more experienced and less likely to get frustrated. 80 is fast approaching though, and I don’t want to be one of those players with a capped character who knows nothing about the game other than hack and slash. So if anyone could answer me a few questions I’d really appreciate it.

1. 95% of the time I’m in World vs World, it’s insanely fun and I enjoy the versatility of combat. From zerging, scouting, havoc and reinforcing towers and keeps. However, I have yet to kill even ONE person by myself… I’ve killed many in zergs, with a partner or with a small group but I haven’t ever succeeded in a one on one. Which is either due to me completely sucking, not being modded what so ever, or because I use a touch pad mouse on a laptop instead of an actual mouse…
So my question is: If I were to mod, what mods should I go for and would they make a big difference or would I hardly notice?

2. Thieves kitten me off… I can at LEAST defend myself against anyone else, even if I never win. But I can’t do anything against thieves because I can’t see them. They stab me a bunch then I’m dead without ever getting a hit in on them. I understand that there are certain abilities that can be used to reveal thieves from their stealthing, as an engineer, do I have any abilities that can do this?

3. What is the difference between PvE and PvP gear and where can I get PvP gear? As I’ve mentioned, I’m in WvW more often than anything and I’m a huge customizational freak, so I spend a lot of time in the vendors and trading company. However, I haven’t noticed any statistical differences in gear that would say PvE or PvP. I got a chest piece from an award box that was level 80 and it said right on it PvP. But I hit “deposit collectible” and now I can’t find it -__-’.

4. This question is far less important than the others but I’m still curious. I did a bit of research on armors and found that back slot items are listed under trinkets. I have a Charr backpack equipped right now that I found under the “container” tab though, and when I look in trinkets all I see are earrings and rings? I right click on ones I think might be back items but none of them have a preview option. Do back items not have that option or am I looking in the wrong tab?

5. I’ll probably be making another character after I reach level 80. I enjoy the engineer class very much, but I’m not finding it as effective in WvW as a lot of the ones I come into contact with. Not to mention it seems like a very under used class. But for now, I’d like to know what attacks I can use to stun enemies. I get blinded, confused, crippled and all that other junk all the time and it’s quite devastating because it leaves you so vulnerable. I’d like to apply those tactics on my enemies so I can be as effective as they. Are there any abilities that come to mind for an engineer that could do this?

I’m aware that I’m probably a complete nub so there’s really no need for name calling… I’m just trying to be as effective as possible so that I can stop relying on zergs to stay alive.

Necromancer, Ranger, Warrior, Engineer
Champion: Phantom, Hunter, Legionnaire, Genius
WvW rank: Diamond Colonel | Maguuma

Your PvP gear is only available in the ‘Mists’. It’s the PvP portion of the game known as sPvP or tPvP. All sPvP gear is cosmetic only, as all stats and builds are available to all players on a level field. When you deposited your sPvP gear it went to the gear wardrobe in the Mists, you can access it from there. You can go to the sPvP portion of the game by clicking the icon right next to the one that lets you enter WvWvW.

The mists is also a great place to try out new skills and builds as you have free access to all profession traits/skills and a plethora of different stat gear. There are training ‘dummies’ there to test you skills against as well. Have fun.

Ok so, my personal imput,

1. It’s perfectly acceptable that you haven’t killed anyone, you have worse gear, you have less traits probably a “not so optimized build” etc etc. Only the base stats are the same in wvw. For engineers i think they usually go with condition damage, precision and thoughness.
2. The best way to learn thief mechanics is to play one. Go to the heart of the mists and play abit around with thief so you can get a grasp of the profession.
Atm there are no skills to remove stealth per se. You can push them out of Shadow refuge (AoE stealth) with your shield #4 only.
3.Ok, it seems you haven’t heard of heart of the mists? On your ui click on the double swords, then click “Go to the heart of the mists”. This takes you to the spvp lobby. If you take a turn right after you enter you’ll see some lockers with your pvp gear. Now pvp gear doesnt have any special stats, its only skins. The stats are handled a little different in spvp.
For WvW he gear is the same as in pve.
4. Back items have preview option. Are you wearing Charr back warmer? That one doesnt have a skin.
5. Your best stun is on your elite “Supply crate”, but it’s a long cd. You have another stun on your shield #4 i think. Bomb kit has a knockback, shield 4 is also a knockback if you use the fliped skill. Slick shoes is a knockdown. Shield 5 has a daze… So yeah, engineers are the most disruptive and chaos inducing class !
You have a blind field in bomb kit and also a confusion bomb. Almost all engineers use bomb kit and grenade kit. Bomb kit is great because it gives you that blind field and if you use your shield #4 on it you will get stealth. It also works for healing turret F1 skill.

1. Thats because the game isn’t really that well balanced in general but especially not in PvP.
Engineers aren’t generally considered to be a “good” class even though they bring quite some utility and mediocre damage to the table in direct comparison to most of the other classes they simply loose.
That in conjunction with the fact that the engi hasn’t got the best chasing capabilities probably leads to your problem.

2. Well… read the first sentence of answer 1 again. Thats just what thiefes do.

5. The engineer has a lack of conditions that are needed in PvP. You’ve got an Immobilize with the rifle and a slow with the pistol but thats pretty much it I#ve never played engi myself so i might be missing something but overall theres nothing useful that would come to my mind.

5) Engineer is one of the best classes for solo or small-group fighting. While your abilities aren’t generally that great in zergs, a good engineer is a nasty enemy. As far as CCs go, I think you are second only to a ridicolous Warrior build. Pistol/pistol offers aoe blinds, confusion, immobilize, the rifle has a quite spammable knockback and immobilize, the shield offers projectile reflection, an AoE knockback and a stun or ranged aoe daze. You can’t go wrong with weapon choice

As for utilities, the toolkit has a nice pull, the flamethrower a nice AoE knockback, turrets especially when traited are CC machines, the elite supply drop is an aoe stun immediately followed by one of the turrets shooting a net… I could go on for ages…

also I don’t want to be rude but justice and liberty has no clue on what he’s saying and is talking out of purely common misconceptions Engineers are one of the most well rounded PvP classes and are the 2nd strongest condition spammers in game.

P.s. I think the game is pretty well balanced right now, with the exception of a few builds/abilities. You should have seen thieves and their deadly 2222222 at release.

“We have no first-person view because stupid people would lock into it”
“You can’t have more than 10 HS decks because that would confuse people”
“30 fps is more cinematic”

No, engineers are great in pvp. They’re balanced and stand a good chance against thieves. They are without doubt a “good class”. Engineers are not the best at chasing but they’re one of the best at locking people down.
Rifle is not that in pvp (imo of course), most people run pistol/shield and most engineers have succeeded that way.

Engineers have such a depth has a class that if we told you everything about them you would just feel overwhelmed.

Why do engineer players take literally everything you say about the class as an insult? What kind of attitude is that.?

As a matter of fact most if not any of the roles an engineer fullfils another class can fulfill as well while usually delivering either better utility or – in most cases – better dps.
I never said the class is bad or anything like that but again it isn’t generally considered to be good and that has it’s reasons.

huh? where did I say i felt insulted?
And he asked mainly pvp questions and since you never played engineer (you said it yourself) i don’t think your word is the best advice. My guess is you’re talking about pve, because in pvp they have been a welcomed class for a long time.

It’s the undertone that makes a post not it’s content.
That argument doesn’t make sense here. Thats like telling you you can’t call a class balanced unless you’ve played every class in the game.
Repeatedly playing against a certain class alon with general knowledge of game, skills and mechanics allows you to measure the strenght of a class.
