Pre April 15th, I spent a lot of real money in the Gem Store. A lot. I mean, several of their employees can probably thank me for their plane trip to China. I liked the occasional toys (the Sonic Tunneling Tool, and the Boxing gloves, etc., may they rest in peace), but mostly it was Town Clothing. I bought lots of individual pieces, and full outfits from which I used individual pieces.

Post April 15th, I’ve been spending next to nothing. I have a huge pile of Gems from my Town Clothing refunds that sits untouched. Mix ‘n’ Match is gone, and Outfits are here. (Supposedly easier and faster to make, but the very first one they released clips with itself on my character. The skirt shows through the sash on her booty). I am not impressed with one-size-fits-all fashion. And I am especially unimpressed when their first offering had issues that have had no sign of being addressed.

If ANet insists on continuing ahead with the “outfit” system, then there is a simple way for them to recover some RP love and start freeing up my wallet again. Give us outfits made up of the old TOWN CLOTHES individual pieces and parts.

The artwork is already there. You play “Mix ‘n’ Match” for us, ANet! You can easily take all of those old already-existing individual pieces, and put them together into hundreds of different combinations for sale cheap. It could easily be a whole new section in the Gem Store. (Like Pokemon, or rabid minipet collectors, there will be people who want to “collect ’em all”!)

And PLEASE go back to giving every character a free “basic” Town Clothes outfit upon character creation. OUTFIT, not tonic! I still pray for the day when all of those clothing tonics you saddled us with become Outfits.

I would much rather see gear skins that can be applied to individual pieces, rather than all-or-nothing outfits. I guess the idea of outfits is that they can design more elaborate costumes and not have to worry about any part of it conflicting with other skins. If the outfit is cool enough, I don’t mind. I picked up the Shadow Assassin outfit recently, and could not be more happy with it. It is just awesome!

Also, yeah… what is up with all these comments? Nobody talked about the actual thread topic at all…

So I was all set to reply to the OP, then I noticed the thread hijacking going on . . . nope, don’t think that’s worth touching at all.

Really, from what I can tell . . . they did away with the “town clothing” system which had been in at launch since it was one of those things barely utilize. It was a little restrictive, and lacked a lot of punch . . . and they weren’t willing, or didn’t possess the time/money to put into expanding on it.

It was clear earlier this year they had almost no plans to really work on Town Clothing too much. So they did probably a wise/stupid – rather than ignore it, they rolled it into the wardrobe system when they did that update.

Your mileage may vary on how you like the effect, but I’m mostly okay with it . . .

Now, in favor of ‘mix and match’ . . . how difficult is it to make a NPC in the home instance (gods that thing is under-utilized) who can make a tonic for an appearance you set up through putting skins together and then generating a code recognizing “Pieces of the outfit: this is this chestpiece with dyes X, Y, and Z; this are these leggings with dyes A, B, and C . . .”

I’m not making an accusation or anything, simply asking – what would it take, tech wise, to do such a thing? I know there’s a way to get chat codes into preview of items, is there a way of adapting that as pointers for a tonic item? Is it possible to add dye schemes to those chat code pointers? Is this something you can drop on a couple interns for bonus pay?

removing the town clothes was pointless and stupid, and it would take more convincing than Anet is willing to do to convince me otherwise. they havent given us anything new in so long id almost say no one works there anymore if i didnt know better. no new classes, no new races, no new weapons for the current classes nothing in almost 2 years.

That which does not kill me, has made a tactical error.

I personally don’t care about Town clothes but it was a role play element and was took out from 1 Role playing game(RPG):P.

Destruction of the town clothes system really disappointed me. I loved those things. In my mind there’s no way to make the current system acceptable.

My town clothes and toys are still in my bank, where I left them. I just didn’t care anymore to get the gem refund in time.

I can’t forget though.

Outfits do have some benefits, the best of which is they’re easy. Easy to make, easy to equip. I’ve been using them for my alts on their road to 80, because I don’t want to bother with fussing with mix’n’match stuff. Then at 80, the actual fun begins. …much like the rest of the game.

Still, a good question, why didn’t they ‘outfit’ the town clothes and other tonic clothing?

I’d had an earlier thought of having a Town Clothes set of tabs, just to bring it back and mimic it after the existing wardrobe, since the concept is already in practice. It’d be a fair amount of extra code and testing, of course.

Still, I think a town clothes outfit would do wonders for those who like to RP and miss having their town clothes available. Same for those who invested in khakis, et al, and got tonics for those too. It would open up a continuing market for casual wear outfits, parallel to the adventuring ones.

Many alts; handle it!

Never understood why it was so hard to just toggle town clothes as being able to be used in battle.
Would have saved them the whole outfit shenanigans, would have made people that invested in town clothes happy, would have made town clothes themselves useful, would have spared everyone the horrible “roflmao everything is a tonic now XD” thing, which is quite possibly one of the worst choices in management I have seen in my gaming life, and it would have spared them having to dispense a million refunds.

No. clue.

…… I have a huge pile of Gems from my Town Clothing refunds that sits untouched. ……

I get the OPs “request”, but the above statement is like telling a Movie Theater owner, “I have a huge pile of tickets but no longer go into the viewing area.” You basically told them, “You have my money, but I don’t feel any incentive to actually use the service I purchased….”

I DO get the “I might buy more gems in the future.”, part of the post, but the above is in no way a “threat” to revenue.

OP needs to understand that there are really 2 extreme sides to this situation. Those that used Town Clothes (for whatever reason) and those that never even turned them on….ever. I hate to say it but I think the latter group is FAR FAR larger than the former, so while the decision about what the Wardrobe system did to Town Clothes is at the very least “questionable”, the number of players outraged by the change is not large enough for them to commit resources to change it.

Note that I could be 100% wrong and the next patch makes all Outfits 6 location skins for armor and lets you trade in tonics for usable skins (but I highly doubt it).

Yea, I haven’t bought gems in a long time and I used to be a regular buyer as well.

The outfit system sucks and I did get a bunch of refunds because of it, but really, the big reason I haven’t spent is because there’s not much worth buying…

I mean, most of the new items are either total rip offs (ex: the tree pack for your home instance that will pretty much never offset the cost of the gems that it costs to buy it) or are just totally bland (reskins of charr backpacks and fuzzy hats).

Kinda sad…I’d really like to support the game, but I’m not just going to throw my $ at crap. =P

I don’t think it should be understood as threat, it however very nicely shows that the OP does not even spent the gems he got refunded on the existing offers.

Having said that, I’m quite the opposite. Ever since “outfits” became easier to use and more importantly an option in combat I purchased them, whereas I never purchased “town clothes” before.

Still I find it a shame that the nice shirts and hoods vanished. I would buy them now if I could mix and match them with my armour.

Did not mean to imply the OP was posting it as a threat and thus I put the word in quotes….could have worded it more clearly, I guess.

I don’t see why they couldn’t turn the existing town clothes into outfits in the first place. They already took the time to give the single pieces matching pieces so you don’t go running around wearing just a shirt.

If nothing else the basic starter outfit for everyone would be nice to have. I like to use the outfits while leveling a character so I don’t have to worry about what their armor looks like. The basic cultural town clothes that were turned into tonics would be amazing as an outfit.

Pretty please with quaggan kisses on top.

Outfits do have some benefits, the best of which is they’re easy. Easy to make, easy to equip.

Town Clothes were EASIER to equip than Outfits currently are. You could keybind them to toggle on/off instantly with the click of a single button. Something they REALLY need to do with Outfits.

As for easy to make, I can’t speak for that. But it should be REALLY easy to make outfits using already existing pieces and parts, one would think, as I am suggesting in my original post. (They’ve already done it several times. The problem is that they designated the resulting costumes to be TONICS instead of Outfits.)

Here’s an old, OLD idea I came up with that was originally based on Town Clothes, but could be changed to operate as Costume Brawl Tonics instead. Yeah, I would buy these! It would certainly liven up the towns again.

More fun stuff, ANet! Gimme toys!
