That’s not what’s causing the spike.

But is the number being sold increasing, decreasing, or remaining the same?

If the number available to be immediately sold is decreasing, then people could:

- Not actively trying to get precursors with the intent to sell. This would cause prices to rise as players will buy the cheaper ones first.

- Being bought faster than being sold. This could be due to players trying to get gear all set up for HoT characters or finish up base game content to be ready for HoT’s release.

- The natural ebb and flow of any economy with an unstable means of acquisition (RNG related in the case of GW2).

The announcement that only 3 new Legendaries will be released with HoT, many people that were holding off on making a Legendary till the ‘Gen Twos’ have decided to go ahead and craft ones they were already interested.

Rest assured that there are MANY factors that help to determine the prices of precursors, and it is certainly not a conspiracy. A lack of any heavy/intense farming events has reduced the supply of t5/6 mats. People taking breaks has lead to a decrease in cheap fares/exotics meaning forging Pres is more expensive. There are plenty more but I’m sure you’re getting my drift.

*As far as The Legend…Daredevil and Druid confirmed to use staff (a Rainbow Staff and a Unicorn shooting Shortbow Meta incoming..hehe), Rev uses staff, Necro uses staff, Ele uses staff, and Mesmer uses staff. That’s a LOT of profeßions that will be able to share the same Legendary (not to mention two Mediums and three Lights who can share Asc. Armor).

I’m just happy that there will be a way to craft Legendaries without relying entirely on the TP.

The legend suffered more than other precursors under the price rise of elder wood, which gained about 50% in value in the last 2 months, as you need 10 planks per rare staff.

Rare staves are already spiking over 1g, so the high price of the legend is just a reflection of that, it has just become very expensive to forge.

There is also a dwindling player base, except maybe during beta weekends but any precursors dropped there, wont make it on the market, so there arent many legends being acquired through loot drops but with no significant game updates for over half a year, people find less new opportunities to spend their gold on, so precursor price is rising.

I have never ever bought a box of fun from the gem store. I have like 20 of them. There’s one in almost every achievement chest.

Read the other posts in this thread. The Quip and Moot require the boxes of fun. You can also obtain them through AP chests.

I would love to take you on that wager, but I don’t think you even are serious about it. And I do not want to get The Legend any other way than ingame, either I get really lucky with a dungeon chest or The Mystic Toilet decided that it is time for me to get another pre-cursor after hours and hours of greens and blues.. and some occasional yellow. So far, the mystic toilet have gave me 2 pres and I got most useless pre from a dungeon chest during year 1.

I think it’s worth bearing in mind precursor prices dropped significantly after it was announced that it would be possible to craft them in HoT. What we’re seeing might just be the prices going back up after the panic selling.

Similar situation with Elder wood, when everyone was farming Firefox clusters the price dropped, now there’s less farming so the price is going back up.

I dont think the HoT announcement had much to do with precursor prices going down in january. It had more to do with cheap t5 snowflakes flooding the market, making forging precursors very profitable during wintersday. If the HoT announcement was the trigger, i would assume pre prices going further down the closer we got to release, which wasnt the case. The popular pres all gained 30-50% in value since march.

The legend has definately seen the highest inflation but that is mostly due to the high elder wood cost and as mentioned by somebody else, staff is a popular weapon wielded by many classes.

Concerning crafting costs for a rare staff, you need 10 elder planks, 6 mithril ingots and 15 t5 mats.

In March, when the Legend was cheapest this year, it cost ~900g, now its ~1350g, so 50% more.
In march you paid 1.2s for an elder plank, 1.1s for mithril ingots and 1.7s for t5 mats.

1.2s x 10= 12s (27% of the overall value)
1.1s x 6= 6.6s
1.7s x 15= 25.5s

Now you pay:
Elder 3s x 10= 30s (48% of the overall value)
Mithril 1.2s x 6= 7.2s
t5 mats: 1.7s x 15s= 25.5s

Overall the crafting cost of a rare staff went from 44s to 63s, so also nearly 50%.

Those extra costs came nearly exclusively from elder wood.

Anet didnt nerf elder wood faucets, the player base simply stopped farming it enough.
Since there has been a lack of new content in the past 6 months, many player simply stopped playing or are leveling alts, which doesnt yield much elder wood.

At the end of June, when the new balance patch went live, many players went shortly back to their mains, to craft their new builds and try them out in lvl 80 content, which shortly injected some t5 fine mats, elder wood and mithril but that has ebbed down weeks ago.
Beta weekends also take a big regular mat faucet out of the game, as many players are on their beta accounts and dont farm mats for the regular market.

The Legend is only currently sky rocketing because anet has announced that Thief is getting staff, it was the same when the Bow went to Guard, that is why others are dropping, I expect to see the Rifle fall off the chart before HoT unless Anet say something, it was the same for Chaos Gun after the nerfed traits on Thief, it became way less attractive to have.

I expect to see, Pistol, Rifle, Shield, ( and underwater weapons ) to completely fall off the radar.

You need to buy one now. Remember ogre wars? It took months for anet to fix it. The new precursor hunt will probably have bugs as well that will take months to fix, and there will probably be items needed in the precursor hunt that would cost more gold in total than buying a precursor now. Buy a precursor now while the prices are still not sky high. /s

What makes you think the prices will go up once ANet offers another acquisition route? Putting aside both your appalling pessimism and that crafting systems are far less likely to contain bugs than world events, even if it’s bugged so that it’s a bit slower than it should be, that’s still going to result in a reduced demand for precursors bought over the TP.

Thanks, though actually I thought they were saying that it had the crafting recipes for precursors and that they would require Boxes o’ Fun. I deleted my post once I realized they were talking about existing recipes for The Moot and Quip.

Well, we know that it will become craftable comes HoT, so TP price will not get any higher than the price and effort needed to use the crafting route.

Some pros and cons of inflation. Inflation isn’t all bad and may even be good over all

Con: your vendoring money doesn’t go as far.

Pro: If you sell mats on the trading post then you’ll make more gold.

Pro: Icy Runestones and salvage kits are practically less expensive than before inflation. If you sell powerful blood for 10 silver then you’ll need to sell more of them to sell to reach your icy runestone goal than you would if they were 50 silver.

However, i think legendaries are incredibly stable in price because so much different mats and currencies go in it, so it doesnt matter too much, if one mat spikes by 50%.

June was just the last time I did a data pull to compare. I don’t really follow the economy much anymore which is why there’s a gap.

I do agree that the costs for legendaries appear fairly stable as they don’t appear to have significantly moved since then. The only thing that really rose were the sell order prices. Crafting twilight/sunrise to make Eternity to sell gives you two legendary skins for 60G. Highly likely it’s not worth doing now as I’m sure others saw it and are doing it.

It’s just to show that pre-cursors like The Legend is going up insanely and the drop rates is so very low, it is impossible to get it by any other means other than dropping tons of rare staff into the toilet bowl…..
And now with Thieves getting staff…… the price is going to be even more insane!!!
Don’t worry, I really won’t take you up on the wager, as I also don’t think it will go up to 1million gold. But 5k gold is rather a realistic amount though….

I think it was in one of the interviews by the vbloggers where Colin said that. Maybe someone who remembers the exact one can post it.

I don’t know why people would still buy them off the tp when you’ll be able to do the mastery instead…. saving a ton of gold. Investing time in that would be preferable over gold grinding… maybe that’s just me.

Why are you irritated today by this? It’s been like that for two legendaries since the game launched. And anyone interested in those just has to wait to get 5 boxes of fun: they drop from AP chests and from the chest of BL goods that we get ~1/week from login rewards.
