I will purchase the upcoming expansion but I’m not sure on the pre-order. I spent $100.00 on HoT and temporarily enjoy the features it included, such as Gliding. When it came to the grinding, I became somewhat disappointed.

A Pre-Purchase will all depend on what content is included with the expansion at release … not on promised content that will follow that will be part of the expansion.

I keep seeing people saying ArenaNet has lied about this expansion, and haven’t delivered.

I just got back to the game last week, can anyone enlighten me on what promises they have gone back on? Or is everyone just whining for the sake of whining?

I can’t think of any promises backed up on. Maybe legendaries are not out as fast as people hoped and season 3 is slow as well but what they said they did come through on. No promises of easy mode where made for the self proclaimed nor super death for those others.

I’ve not seen too much complaining that ANet lied about the expansion. Some about a perceived change in direction/focus for the game though.

No I wont.

And I don’t see how even if you like HoT that you would think its a safe bet to preorder when we are still waiting for things advertised as part of Hot ( apart from Raids which to be fair are best served with a staggered release)

I will buy it if I ever do 9 months after release when I 1. know if its the sort of xpac that has content I would like and 2. have seen that promised content is actually in game.

100% no way. This expansion was released straight-up unfinished. It took months to get two raid wings, no legendary armor to this day, incomplete story ended on a bogus cliffhanger with zero resolution, WvW map released with atrocious bugs (that took months to resolve) and with revamp nowhere in sight, horrendous balance issues went unresolved for the entire PvP Season 1, bandaid fixes created an even worse meta for PvP Season 2, the list goes on and on. Scribing is still a mess that costs more than a legendary to level up to maximum. The legendary crafting masteries were horrendously broken for months.

This is ignoring the pre-launch deception about unlocking elite specs as well. What makes anybody think that the next expansion will roll out any differently? Overpromised and underdelivered… with the “fix it later” mentality at the helm.

I think it’s less “They lied!” and more “It didn’t live up to the hype,” for a lot of people. Precursor crafting and scribing are both very expensive, so that discourages some people from getting involved with them. Others might not be in guilds, so the guild features don’t affect them. The HoT maps are very interesting, but require looooong event chains (bad if you disconnect!) and the LFG tool is desperately in need of a rework to accommodate them. Everything is pretty grind-intensive, especially masteries and specializations. They reduced the numbers for both, and there are plans for other improvements, but that’s just another thing that people feel was underpolished or unfinished.

Considering we went a year with minimal content updates between LS2 and HoT, I can see why people were a little let down by HoT. I enjoyed it a lot and don’t regret the purchase, but that’s a lot of pressure, and HoT was a little shaky in a lot of areas. I’m hoping the next expansion learns from some of the pitfalls this one experienced, and it sounds like they’re at least aware of the problems.

I pre-purchased gw 2 and hot but right now I am not so sure if I will, hot was quite a letdown and with their wvw practically dead and pvp being ruined with the “lets be like moba” feel along with the sub par storyline.

I would first need to hear more details of what is to be added, and a much bigger map is required as if it is more hot type content then I do not know if I could continue supporting Anet.

The quality has dropped quite a bit from gw 2 to hot

I probably wont buy next expansion at all. This one is already nothing but unfinished mess with lot of features missing and no word on them other than “it will come someday”

WvW Iraq map is a fail and i wish them to delete it and bring back old apline zone.

PvP is so unbalanced, cheese followed by crap matchmaking that its not even fun (saying that as someone who had generally tons of winstreaks by blowouts).

2 (3 for heavy) new armor sets. And guess what? they look TERRRIBLE on charr. Look at the heavy helmet for example on a human and charr. No comprasion at all. Ty a lot.

New class which is rushed and full of bugs (main reason why i bought xpac)

Joke story, not so much contest, “3 biome” 4 small maps and so on.. etc.
Lets also not forget how long we have been waiting for any info regardless expansion just to see a new blog pop up about frogs.. its outrageous.. Other companies have no issues to spoil what xpac contains day one as they announce it.

Hmm i cant see myself buying next xpac anytime soon, let alone pre order.

I really hope we will see something usefull happening before and call is gives WELL HErés the next expansion… Unless the expansion is free for people who payed for Vanilla and HoTIn that case i do not care,

payed 74.99 for vanilla (6.5K hours) and 99.99 for HoT….(also some)

Sure. If I’m playing at all, I plan start the expansion when it launches and so I’d prefer to have the advantages of early purchase.

HoT definitely has its annoyances, but then so did the core game at launch. Lest we forget:

  • Guild chat didn’t work for a week for some of us (and 2-3 days for most of us).
  • The TP didn’t work at all for close to two weeks (due to the same volume issues it had during BETA).
  • Dungeon rewards were weak unless you grinded them like crazy.
  • Champs and World Bosses didn’t offer any substantive loot.
  • Lots of mechanics were terrible at launch and have been replaced by the wardrobe, the wallet, etc.

Not a chance.

As a rule, I do not pre-purchase games anymore. And after they cheaped out on HoT by charging fifty bucks for a tiny expansion that they wouldn’t even include a measly character slot with unless you pre-purchased, I certainly wasn’t about to break that rule. It was a sleazy manipulation tactic.

Heck, I still haven’t purchased HoT, and I don’t plan on doing so in the near future, either.

On the contrary, my point is that launches are always rough. I’m not deciding how to spend my money based on the stuff that didn’t go well; I’m deciding based on what I do like.

I like what I’ve seen to-date, I’m willing to live through HoT’s temporary issues for a few months.

A little of each. There have been quarks here and there. They basically ripped off the community who has been here from the start for charging full price for an expansion… But I say whatever money goes into this game is good. They also did pretty poorly on their ad campaign. There were some issues with preording as well but I can’t remember off the top of my head. Pre-HoT the outcry was that GW2 needed more challenging content. They naturally did this (As end game should when new end-game content is released.) and now the social standard is that HoT is too difficult for the casual. I mean, list anything about this game and someone has a problem with it.

I doubt the game sees another expansion after the failure they just had.
My best guess:
1) Crappy gem store updates
2) Some “Content updates” (you know, content promised in the expansion but not actually in it)
3) Then a slow and painful death with promises laced with…. soon™.

Will I buy the expansion? Absolutely not. Trick to me once, shame on you. Trick me twice, shame on me.

Nah my comment was geared toward the the bugs issue, that sort of stuff is going to occur regardless. They are pretty deceant for bug fixes ( except skill bugs…..they are terrible at that- mesmer bugs for years horror :O)

It was geared at the comparison of HoT to core…. You can’t with a straight face compare them due to immense difference in content but yet eerily similar launch prices. I’m prolly taking slightly out of context – but a lot of disconnect occurs when they release an expac and then months down the road say they are adding more giving off the appaearace of an unfinished product. Some players have had receant bad expriences with receant kickstarter games.

Overall agree with whatever people decide to do – it’s their money. I do promote against pre-ordering though, there was a time where it was getting the game early and then getting a bonus – Now it seems enticement by flashy freebie skins while skimping out of game, because once they get your money it doesn’t matter anymore.

depends on the pre-purchase (be specific here, pre-orders can be canceled, pre-purchases are generally for good) package benefits.

I got everything I expected from this expansion. I like the new maps (although I wish adventures were personal unlock and stayed unlocked), and I like meta-events (although I wish they were slightly shorter, I don’t often have 2~3 hours to dedicate to a map unless I have a few days off). I have not tried raid’s yet, the problems there really are not Anet’s design but something I expected with the way players go about things. I do generally like fractal changes, not super fond of instabilities but I am looking forward to potential changes.
I think Masteries worked well, the story seemed somewhat short, I wish LS2 was bundled as part of HOT since that was really the story build up, rather than sold separately. I think if you account for both parts the story was quite long and did give you a chance to feel for the characters (although it was very drawn out between LS release & wait for Xpac).

tldr; I got what I expected, and what I paid for.

I bought HoT two days before release. Sometimes I regret that deeply, especially when I stand in line for an adventure to open up which I in general despise and groan and moan my way through until I barely make silver success ot when I miss a glide by some measely inches and have to do the gliding stuff again, or when I fly to far and float over the creeping vines at the bottom of the map.

Then on other days, I wander casually through it to do this and that or for recipes.

To answer the question, only if there is no other game that can sweep me off my feet until then or the expansion covers territory that lies in my interst, like tengu, new fractals, open world changes and a story that is not just a shorter rehash of the Zhaitzan story.

Sadly I don´t have much hope for CU, I don´t want to play wvw only. Maybe Star Citizen.

I was also anticipating living world updates- for a few more years- Like the base game offered. Since then the only thing i’ve heard about them talking about is a new expansion.

It wasn’t until recently they commented- From reddit, more information on what is planned, but it’s months down on the line…from things i was expecting to get with Hot.

I waited for the last possible moment to pre purchase HoT. For me personally HoT has not been worth the money. I’ve done the meta events on all the maps some more than once, but ultimately I didn’t enjoy it, I wasn’t that much of a fan of silver wastes. To me HoT was worth the £28 I payed for it. If I had payed more I would have been very angry. But as far as content goes. There has been very little content added unless your a raider.

But currently ANet seem to be catering to the hardcore elite in both PvP and PvE, the poor folks that play WvW have been neglected for far too long, sure they got new maps, but from what I hear they are bad. I’ve had a look at them, and after running around for 15-20 minutes I stopped. I didn’t see anyone from an opposing side, they just seem like PvP in a PvE map.

But I’m getting off track, we all know the problems HoT brought. Lets just hope what ever comes next is not.more of the same.

Given how the video game industry behaves these days – pushing out unfinished, broken, micro-transaction-laden anaemic products at a high price tag (combined with review embargoes) – it makes absolutely no sense to be to hand over money months in advance for something entirely unseen.

The sad thing is though, the industry gets away with it because there will always be a minority of people who will hand over cash in a flash because of some misguided loyalty to a given publisher or developer and then attempt to shut down any dissent from the rest of us who prefer to be better informed about what they’re stumping up the cash for.

In the case of HoT – I still don’t have it, and from reading these forums and elsewhere, I have learned that because I’m a dirty casual who prefers to play games for fun rather than grind away what little free time I have, I learned that this expansion wasn’t for me.

I probably will even though I haven’t spent much time in the HoT maps yet and haven’t even completed the story (mostly due to my super casual playstyle and lack of time).

Since GW2 launched, this is the only game that’s been able to hold my interest, so even though I don’t play as much as I would like to, I’m okay with pre-ordering the next expansion.

While HoT may have its problems, ANet is working on addressing them (maybe not as fast as people hope) and I’m sure they have learned a lot from this expansion.

So i will yet once again wait until i see what gets patched in on patchday. Then i will consider what content will arrive if i buy the expansion and then i judge the price.

I keep seeing people saying ArenaNet has lied about this expansion, and haven’t delivered.

I just got back to the game last week, can anyone enlighten me on what promises they have gone back on? Or is everyone just whining for the sake of whining?

I don’t think it’s fair to say they lied. It’s just that, through a combination of their marketing and hype, and customer over-optimism, expectation were much higher than delivered. Some of these expectations changed before HoT, some after. For me:

Price:
Expectation – Maybe half the cost of the base game.
Reality – The same as the base game.

New class:
Expectation – Would come with a couple of free character slots.
Reality – Came with one free character slot, after massive backlash.

WvW:
Expectation – New maps would be added.
Reality – New maps replaced current maps, and destroyed WvW. Also massive gold sinks turned up.

Legendary weapons:
Expectation – We’d get a full set of legendary weapons.
Reality – Five months later we have three legendary weapons, and no time frame on more.

Precursor crafting:
Expectation – We’d have a fun and accessible way to get precursors instead of the massive gold sink.
Reality – We have a fun and accessible way to get precursors, broken up in the middle by a massive gold sink.

Guild halls:
Expectation – We’d get a small hall we could decorate and level with our guild.
Reality – We got a massive and pretty amazing hall we could decorate and level with our guild… with an enormous gold sink. Oh and they broke guild missions for a few weeks.

Story:
Expectation – We’d get a medium length story that addressed Living World questions like where Rytlock has been, and handled a sudden anti-Sylvari climate.
Reality – Eh… It sort of did some stuff well, but was really short.

Maps:
Expectation – Intitial, loads of new maps.
Reality – Actually some pretty amazing maps, but only three you can really explore, and all of them bound to timed metas.

Rewards:
Expectation – Loads of new armours and weapons, including the Revenant weapons from beta.
Reality – Keys. So. Many. Keys.

Fractals:
Expectation – Reworked reward system, including a legendary backpiece.
Reality – Initially broken rewards system, no legendary backpiece so far.

Raids:
Expectation – Three new raids.
Reality – So far, two thirds of a raid.

Dungeons:
Expectation – Nothing really. Maybe a couple of new ones?
Reality – Actively made the ones we had worse.

Post-launch:
Expectation – The content drought would end. We’d get living story again, and maybe even things like SAB or Dragon Bash.
Reality – Unless you’re a raider or a PvPer, then it’s occasional festival repeats for about a year.

Now a lot of those expectations were absolutely my own fault, and not ANet lying. But the problem is that ANet are so tight-lipped about what they’re doing that all you can do is guess about what’s coming. Combine that with some areas where they actually did way over-hype the content that was coming, or at least the time frame it was coming in, and it just makes it very hard to justify pre-ordering the next one.

Right now I have a hard time imagining I’ll buy it at all, much less pre-order it.

I look at all the expansions that have been delivered by AAA games and HOT is up there with the best. I would prepay, but not until close to the delivery date – keep Anet on their toes.

no frikin way, what i got is HM with annoyance, not an expansion i can love.
everything they showed is made with hardcore players in mind, the small and casual players get pretty much nothing and just a glider is no reason to buy an expansion.
