I disagree with this one. Precursors should never be just handed out for literally no effort.

Even though I don’t know what it consists of, since we know the precursor scavenger hunt is coming, I’m satisfied. Assuming, of course, the terrible RNG isn’t pushed to a particular component of the collection, like needing a different particular exotic to drop in order to get the precursor. Anything in the collection needs to either be craftable, purchasable from a vendor, or have fairly reliable droprates.

There’s no good way to make this work. If the precursors are tradeable, it would tank the market, and if they’re not…it would still be pretty damaging to the market. Maybe if they’re account bound and randomly assigned, it could limit the impact, because not everyone wants to make the legendary <insert weapon you wouldn’t use or don’t like> even if they had the precursor. (And couldn’t sell it.)

Kinda hard to see birthday precursors as being so awesome, in that light. Many people, myself included, can’t afford the precursor for a Legendary, so they might not mind the precursor market tanking, but I’m wary about the other economic effects that would have. I make most of my money selling rares and exotics on the trading post, and I have to wonder how much of their demand is fueled by people trying to forge precursors.

Just giving out tons of precursors is a reckless solution to a complex problem. Hopefully the upcoming precursor crafting will show the amount of time and thought the developers have spent on it.

Actually it would… The way birthdays are handled in this game means I (and everyone who had early access) would wake up one morning and find (personally four, but across all acounts thousands) of precursors.
It would be southsun all over again a few hundred times worse.

I know that most people will likely flame me for this…but precursors have ALWAYS been handed out for literally no effort. With the way RNG is you either get it or you don’t. There is no skill/effort/etc in getting a prec some people are lucky (usually more than once for some odd reason) while most aren’t. But that’s another discussion entirely. I just wanted to say I hate when people just say “You want something for no effort”, because that’s exactly what this system has been.

And just to set the record straight it’s not that I agree with the OP, just that I don’t agree with you. Besides if you think about it as you put 3 years into the game and are thus rewarded with a precursor…That’s a bit of effort, no?

To hell with the market, some people just want to play the kitten game not roleplay virtual tradesman.

Market decisions monopolize this game’s development way too much. Keep the market in crafting and convenience, not prestige items.

No… don’t send the market to hell…. If you tank precursors you tank Everything in the game that matters. Precursors are the ‘thing’ that holds the economy together, everything from the value of legendary weapons to the value of copper ore, soft wood, fangs of all variety, etc, etc. If you tank the pre (or the legendary market) everything else would essentially become worthless.

Why? Because if people quit forging for Pre’s with rare weapons than the price of the rare weapons will go down, (indirectly pushing ecto’s down). As well people would quit forging with exotics so the value of those goes down (directly pushing ecto’s down), as well as all T6 crafting mats (Fangs, Blood, Totems, Etc.) {Indirectly pushing down the value of ALL miscellaneous crafting mats (the less value T6 has, the less T5 has because of the mystic forge conversions)}. Between all the listed above it would force the price of Exotic Armors down (because crafting now costs less, which means making ascended costs less, pushing the values down on exotic even further).

As an added note: Giving everyone Pre’s might not equal giving everyone a legendary but it sure makes it a lot more likely we’d be seeing a lot more legendaries. Which would also decrease demand for exotic/ascended weapons given the stat swapping abilities.

So… No, the economy doesn’t deserve to be taken out just because Some people want to be given stuff with more value than they probably should.
(I’m sure Wanze, or one of the other Econ. specialists might have a few corrections to make, and if so let me know and I’ll change the post to reflect. This was just typed out in a little bit of a hurry)

No!

I have umpteen characters. That would mean I could get umpteen precursors.

Even if they were accountbound, it would crash the precursor market. People wouldn’t bother buying precursors, they’d just wait until they got one.

It would also completely negate any reason for A-net including the precursor scavenger hunt/crafting planned for HoT.

No to precurcer, but I’m torn between getting a unique mini that you can’t get unless you have an account at that time or a random mini from all the collection sets. I use to think the unique mini kind of sucked but than I thought about it and kind of like it now. Also it would be cool if Anet could make it where your oldest character gets the new unique mini and all your younger alts get a random mini when they get to their birthday. I like one unique mini but there is no use for more than one so giving the same mini to all characters on your account really need to change. Maybe they can make it selectable in some way like in some reward chests where you can choose what weapon or armer you want. It can be a gift box with the option to pick that years unique mini or a random one.

Opinions are like ______ everyone has one I could
put the correct term in but not everyone has kittens

Please no. That would defeat the very definition of a “legendary” weapon (as non-legendary as those weapons already are, this would be plain ridiculous). Precursor crafting/scavenger hunt is coming (confirmed), so it’s no longer a matter of RNG, and just handing them out would be even more pointless. I’d get three in the span of a month, six until Christmas. Why would that be desirable?

Thank you, Dasenthal, for elaborating on what precursors do for the economy, frustrating though they are. There’s gotta be a gold sink somewhere, and they’re a major one.

Personally, I hope the 3rd Birthday Gift has something unexpected, like the Birthday Blaster. It’s goofy, but it was a lot of fun to open it up, have that moment of WHAT IS THIS, and then run around blasting cake everywhere. Really didn’t see that coming.

Not literally no effort, since you still had to do something to get it. I will agree, though, that the current system is bad as the effort put forth in getting a precursor is horridly inconsistent.

Not nonexistant, but inconsistent. Farming hundreds of exotics to toss into the Forge is a very significant bit of effort, and this is what a lot of folks do. Others get them to drop off a moa. As such, you can’t say there is “no effort” in getting them right now. There very much is effort involved, it’s just horridly inconsistent.

However, getting them for your third birthday? That just means you made a character three years ago. You didn’t have to do anything with said character. And yes, there’s also the fact it would royally screw up the market to a degree we have never seen before. Even if the precursors were acount bound, demand for various lodestones, t6 materials, ore, wood, dyes, ectos, and mystic clovers would skyrocket prices.

The 3rd year precursor gift can work like that and not break the market completely:

1. Account Bound
2. You get to choose ONE precursor when your ACCOUNT first hit 3 year mark.
3. You will only ever get ONE precursor per account, the remaining characters who hit 3rd year would not get additional precursor.

So it basically only give away ONE ACCOUNT BOUND precursor to all the account for their dedication of playing GW2.
Three years is by no means short period of time. It is reasonable to reward one Precursor for the dedication.
