I don’t raid, I barely fractal, and I suck beyond words at PvP and WvW.
But I try, and that’s what counts.
Age, hours played, events and kills have no bearing on precursor rates, and they never will.
It’s all about luck.
If you take the gamble and flush rares or exotics and get something, good on you.
But the only way to make sure you get your precursor is to buy it directly.
Hey guys, wanted to give my input on this. I personally have played for a year now and since i have started i have mystic forged 7 precursors and i had 1 drop recently out of AC. The chances of a drop are so low that i cant begin to describe how lucky i got. Later that day i had gotten Zap, and the next morning i had gotten Colossus. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TC7lOsIYYzI here is a link to my video about it. Would like to know other peoples thoughts on this. Seems to me that precursor drops are not that rare. And yes i understand the percentages.
Is there a time you normally try for MF pres? or a day? (looking into variables)
Precursors are a mess. Don’t go for a legendary if you don’t like the skin and even if you like it. It’s not worth it.
I have another advice: don’t even go for a legendary if you don’t happen to have precursor, it really kittenes people a lot when they’re just waiting on precursor.
We don’t have much data about loot system, but what we know because it has been officialy said many times by anet is that loot system is very complex.
What I know from computers is, the more complex, the more bugs.
Every time I’ve heard a dev talking about loot, it was something like “I don’t understand everything about loot, because it’s too complex, but what I know for sure is….”.
If no one (or only 1 person) understand how it works globally, you can’t fix it.
Anet devs are professionnal, so they must have a team working on this subject from time to time, to check if everything is working as intended. I’m pretty sure some tests are done perdiodically, but are this tests realized on the live servers ? Because with past updates we all witnessed your perfectly working patchs on tests servers were introducing bugs on live servers, so there must be some differences there.
Since you’re instanciating maps based on guild/friend list/server, couldn’t you instance a map only for dev/beta test accounts ? That wouldn’t be to test future update (your server can’t run 2 version simultaneously), only to test present content.
I have 5000 playing hours and I recently check how much money I have and….
I have 14,000 gold in selable items… (That is after buying 9 permanent bank licence and have enough gems to buy 52 character slots.
If you have 5000 playing hours and you still can’t afford a precursor. There is only 2 possibility(you spend those 5000 hours in spvp which dont’ earn gold)… or you have enough gold to buy your precursor but you keep complaining.

And you play WvW and kit out your characters for solo, roaming and raids and lose kittenloads of gold because of non salvagable gear and weapons. (while anet now put a picetag on this gear, still not salvageable) balance is so out of wack you almost need to max out to stand a chance. thats about 400 g per char in sets of gear.
Tried my luck in the forge tonight. 500 rare great swords, 40 exotic great swords. Nothing. All swords & money down the drain. That’s RNG for you. Not sure which is worse, the mystic toilet or hoping one will drop from some random mob or event.
If you give up or stop caring (or both) you won’t have to be disappointed. That’s what I did and it’s working out great so far.
That being said I still want to see the entire system revamped.
Not so sure I do care. The only down side to using the forge is the money sink. Takes a while to build funds back up for another go.

GW2 was released on August 28th 2012.
Today is October 20th 2014.
That is 783 days since the game has been out. If we divide 5000 by 783 we get 6.3.
So basically you’re saying that we only need to play an average of 6 hours a day over the course of 2 years. To be able to get a precursor. Which is only one small part of a legendary weapon.
Well if that doesn’t sound like the most well thought out argument I’ve ever heard…

I’m trying to respond to the OP and everyone else which says he have 5000 playing hours and still no precursor.
That’s what the OP said right? He played 5000 hours and still can’t afford a precursor?

Hours played is irrelevant. Especially considering not everyone plays the same way and the same game modes. Where some are more rewarding in gold than others.
Whatever the case. The current ways we have to get precursors are un fun, un inventive, un interesting, boring, lame, lazy, poorly thought out, and tedious.
It really surprises me that the pinnacle of aesthetic progression which GW2 is all about comes down to an rng toss and that anet has been okay with that for 2 and a half years.

Jesus Christ! 14,000 gold? I’m accepting Storm (700g) kthxbai!
These precursor topics are always the same. People who want an easier way of attaining something that they have neither the willpower nor attention span to obtain. People say they have spent 5000 hours playing the game and have never gotten a precursor, but if they spent a fraction of that actually trying to save for one then they would have one, no problem.
And not to mention the amount of ‘ideas’ floating around about how to reward precursors based on skill, how long you’ve been playing and dedication etc. It’s a joke. You suggest this knowing full well that as soon as it’d be implimented you’d be elligible for one free legendary. Look at the bigger picture folks; people have legendaries, they work hard for them, they exist. Nothing in the game is unobtainable, just stop waiting for someone to make it easier and earn it yourself.
Take a moment to actually consider how you could impliment a method of obtaining a precursor without completely breaking the balance of how many there are, and when you come up with a fullproof system that retains the rarity and prestige that they currently have, tell me, I’m dying to know.
Edit: Also, obtaining a precursor is not RNG. A precursor dropping is. Same with all items. If you want one, they put a system in place whereby you can get one at any point anytime and with little hassle. It’s called the trading post.

Fixed.
There IS a way to get precursors/legendary the easy way – go get your credit card, convert gold to gems, and buy it.
I respect someone who put work irl and can afford the hundred of dollars necessary. It would be the same (and probably intelligently less time consuming) to do so.
I also want to see legendary feats > legendary RNG. But in my opinion, it’s equally a legendary feat to have the tenacity and patience to farm the money to buy it.
IT has to be something ridiculously difficult. Maybe 15,000+ AP, a couple hundred laurels, and steady long-term investment. Requires achievements from PvP, WvW, and PvE. Something that equals the effort and time investment of farming dungeons to make the gold to buy a precursor.
I have 1500 hours in this game, started on the first day when this game went out.
Got precursor in 2nd month (Zap) in 2nd try in mystic forge from 4 rare weapons – sold it for 200 gold (huge mistake).
1.5years away. Came back after 3 weeks of daily 10h farming bought precursor for 900 gold. Now farming for materials needed for my Legendary Hammer.
Currently at 70% of completion.
But i used over 400 gold in MF and got nothing. MF is only money sink. Chance to get precursor is 0.01% if you have 300% Magic Find its 0.03%.
Conclussion: Dont Gamble, farm the money and buy the bloody thing. But i know why you gamble you are a greedy **** thinking that for 1000 tries you can get 3,4 precursors, you were mistaken.

This is what the OP typed
AGE : 782 DAYS
HOURS : 5642 (with zero afk)
WORLD EVENTS : THOUSANDS
FOES KILL : MILLIONS
I would presume he did a bunch of world events and farmed a bunch.
There is a different when people tell me they have real life obiligation and can’t afford precursor. And there’s the person who definitely should be able to afford precursor and says he can’t get a precursor.
I admit half of my play time is farming, that’s why I have so many golds, and it burned me out, I can’t farm any more… But with the OP’s playing time and by what he typed, much of it is doing pve events which should generates money, I highly doubt he can’t afford a precursor.

I’m wondering, what’s more rare, a precursor or fractal sword drop?
Come to think of it I’ve seen more Grinning shields than I’ve seen Fractal Swords.
@op
Most people with issues about it are obviously the ones who had “bad luck” and who knows a couple of guys with “good luck”.
There are millions of accounts in this game, your sample size of “guys I know” is simply too small to reflect the actual probability to get a precursor to drop every time you roll for loot plus other factors like magic find, diminishing returns etc..
What part of RNG do you not understand?
And who told you that i dont understand it ? Probably you dont understand ! ! !
I am just saying that i dont like it and its totaly unfair ! ! ! …… now you understand it?
Try not only to read what i am saying but understand what i am trying to say also.
Except it is fair. Ridiculously so.
Moment to moment, you have the same chance as anyone else in the game of getting your precious exotic. That it doesn’t hit for you may suck, but it doesn’t mean it is biased against you.
Oh yeah. takes a drink
Something like :
1) Need to be 80 lvl to get precursor
2) Need to have number of hours to get precursor
3) Need to have over 10k or more AP to get precursor
4) Need to have some kind of achievement to get precursort
5. Need to never be able to get more than one in the entirety of your in-game history. These things are far too common.
