Watching the last WP video, he was going through the Bastion of the Penitent raid for story bits and reading a book dialog popup he came across the following dialog:

“An old, tattered book, assumedly from the prison library.”

I’m not a teacher or a grammar stickler, but for some reason it jumped out at me. “Assumedly” is not a word. It’s probably because WP read it out loud.

It should be “assumably” or better yet “presumably” for it to mean what it was meant in context.

My daughter wants to go into game design as a writer and narrative designer and after pausing the video, I used this as a teaching moment for her, that even big companies with large budgets can make mistakes, and why proof reading your work is important.

All this to say, I’m curious about the process of writing these small bits of dialogue.

Also, what other weird bits have people seen in the dialogue throughout the game?

All those words, presumably, assumably, assumedly are close enough in meaning that they could all be used in that sentence. The difference, at best, would be the level of precision or what one might want to imply.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

what about “allegedly”? you can see it everyday in newspapers.

“Allegedly” refers to an accusation.

“Presumably” is closer to what we’d use in modern English. “Assumedly” sounds (and looks) weird, so I wouldn’t choose it as a writer or an editor unless I wanted to make the speaker sound ‘fussy’ in a bad way.

It’s worth including as an in-game /bug report, to give the devs a chance to review. They’ll queue it up with a bunch of other text issues and decide which are worth re-writing and re-translating.

(It’s a good teaching moment regardless of what happens — sometimes business needs trump good editing, too.)

This sort of thing really rattles my cage. This isn’t the first time I’ve seen corrections on stuff that was perfectly correct. Back in my retail days, I used to put up signs on the store window that said, Help Wanted – Enquire Within because I knew some people would try to correct me, and say inquire was correct. Enquire was also correct.

People who questioned it had more of a chance of getting a job, because it showed they weren’t scared to think and challenge, but when you’re sitting at home on a computer, there’s no reason to say something is not a word when it is.

A simple google check would have gone a long way.

OP is sort of right.

Assumedly may be a word (admittedly one the forum dictionary is unaware of), but in that sentence, it comes across as awkward simply because it’s not a word in common use. Therefore I’d recommend "presumably", given it more accurately reflects what the sentence is trying to convey, and wouldn’t cause any head scratching.

Not in common use in our universe, does not exclude it from the game universe.

Bookah isn’t even a real word for us, yet for asura it certainly is.

English is a live language. It is not a tame language, as was written down in the books already decades out of date that your teachers used to tell you what the “one true way” of the language was.

It will have dialects, it will evolve, it will change the meaning of words, it will simplify and gain complexity. This is unavoidable.

You can either accept it, or you can stand on the beach shouting at the ocean, “no, you may not come in, I refuse you.” Whatever makes you happy, I guess.

It was so much easier when I only had to worry about one set of colloquialisms (ie. my own).

That’s a little too close to current political climates there =P

Probably only too close if we pay attention to the demographics that use the “disfavoured” dialects, really.

The word “armor” isn’t a real word either. Neither is “humor”.

To prove it, type the words into a reply here; the words are underlined in red.

Now, “armour” and “humour” are correct.

There are other, worse things in the writing and narrative that could be used as a teaching moments. The story and characters are essentially a bundled case of, “things not to do” examples.

Maths is not a word. It’s Math.

Right back at ya!

Things like that don’t bother me at all. I suppose I could even let irregardless go (ugh…that double negative!), but literally is literally destroyed of all meaning at this point. The dictionary says it is what it is, and also the opposite of what it is.

If that isn’t the precursor (doh!) to alternative facts, I don’t know what is.
