Problem with Ascended Accessory
2 words – time sink
Why is there only 2 ways of getting these?
1) 12 Commendations + 5 Gold
2) 40 Laurels + 50 Ectos-This is very frustrating because commendations/laurels are account bound currency that I need to use on multiple characters.
I recently changed my builds on 2 of my 80’s and I need to replace 4 accessories…equally out to 36 commendations and 40 laurels for 4 pieces.
I don’t care about the gold or ectos I need because I can farm all day every day to get that, but I am limited to the amount of laurels or commendations I can get per week.
I can only get 5 commendations per week and 7 laurels per week (10 for monthly) so starting from nothing it will take me 8 weeks to get all the accessories I need for my 2 characters? 2 MONTHS?!!? Then when I finally get the pieces a patch will make me have to change my build again…
You can get a total of 6 guild commendations per week if your guild also has puzzles open, which means you can get 4 accessories in 6 weeks or a month and half.
Forgot to add:
You can also get ascended items in World vs. World. Prices vary based on the slot you want.

The time limit is there to give you a feeling of constant gear progression (always working towards a new goal). They originally added Ascended items because people felt they were able to reach the gear cap (exotic) too quickly. So now you always have something to work towards. The game is still balanced around exotic gear (mobs didn’t get stronger when ascended was added), so this isn’t limiting your ability to do well in the game. It just gives you the feeling of always being able to do better. Don’t worry about getting all ascended gear as soon as possible, that’s not the point of it. It’s just there for people that want an extra challenge.

With the difference that content isn’t gated by this particular gear.

In-game you’ll realize it’s nothing like WoW.

The devs already answered that one – they want you to do guild missions. That’s why the second method (laurels) is purposefully worse than the first one.
So, the dev’s solution to the problem of ascended gear forcing people into FotM was to force them into other gameplay modes.

And when your guild only does missions once a week, and you miss those 2 hours, you’re screwed because it’s not like you can find those replacements in the gw2lfg website like you can for fractals.

Yes you can. Keep your eyes open. Got most of my commendations through gw2lfg.com.

So people want the best gear but they don’t want to do a dungeon, a guild mission or dailies, which is the open world. You can get them doing dailies and monthlies without ever doing a guild mission or ever setting a foot in a dungeon. And frankly, if you’re not doing either of them, you can probably wait.
The DR should be character specific not account wide.
WvW ascended, collect them all!

I don’t see Guild Challenges in the slightest. The most I’ve seen is bounty in gw2lfg.

I solved this problem by joining a second guild. It just happens that they did their guild stuff on a different day to my first guild.

We can’t get accessories or back pieces with badges of honor, and even the stuff we can get is limited by the laurels. I have ZERO reason to play my alt-chars these days.
And I wonder what the hell I’m supposed to do with all the badges I already have, never mind that I get even more just from playing and level WxP rank.

Or, perhaps, they want to do a dungeon – but they are told they have to do guild missions as well. Or, they want to do guild missions, and will hear “no backpack for you”. Or they play open world/WvW excesively… but only on weekends.

At one month per item (over a year per set, when it will be released fully) it’s just not viable approach. Especially when that set can be invalidated by a single class ner… balance. Or, if you don’t play every day.

If it was easy to get then it wouldn’t be valuable. Mostly the large guilds run all the missions, but smaller ones although they run less they run more frequently.
I do agree, since ascended is the tier to aim for, the game is punishing you if you wish to change builds, essentially having to downgrade back to exotics if you require a new stat distribution. Time gate progression is too harsh, the problem is not the time gated progression (even if its a bit OTT), it’s the needlessly over complication of stats and combos which makes purchases and changes too expensive both in currency and in time.
I’ve just given up on ascended accessories, the time/effort is not worth the reward. If I’m on and join in a random guild mission, fine, I’ll get the commendations, but I’ve lost any interest in getting full ascended…it’s not worth it.
Like already said, it’s just a huge time sink to keep people busy in between the little events while they work on the next big addition.
Time-gated content/progression is the worst thing to ever come to MMO’s.
You’re lucky if option 1 is even an option – for many of us out there we don’t even have access to guild events and thus commendations are a non option, you ONLY option is to wait literally months to accrue the necessary laurels

Why is it not an option? Hundreds of guilds host public guild missions multiple times a week. You’d have to go out of your way to not be able to finish your guild missions every week, it’s so easy.

Where can I find further information on that? – It’s certainly not common knowledge or something that is publicly advertised.
Getting INTO a guild is like getting blood out of a stone. The last guild I applied to 3 times, their application form took an hour to fill in each time and they kept losing my application, the guild before that the leader got stoned and booted me over an imaginary slight, the one before that closed over-night with no warning, and before that they all band-wagoned to a more successful server for the WvW… at this point I’ve given up even trying to find a guild… so you’re saying there’s guilds out there that just take in random people to do their precious guild missions, no questions asked? – Seems like crazy talk after my experiences so far)
