Q:

For some reason my characters run slower than other players and the speed decreases periodically and randomly. I always use swiftness and when running along side other players who have the same swiftness boon, I am still slower. The only time I actually match their speed is when I have super speed on, and even then they do not have super speed, just regular swiftness.

I’ve noticed this problem a lot and I’m wondering now if it has anything to do with internet connection or lag. Would a slower connection make it appear as if my character is running slowly even if the rest of the gameplay is running smoothly?

Or is there some other issue or mechanic I am unaware of?

A:

It’s a bug. Basically when exiting combat, you don’t always exit combat speed (so you continue running slowly as if you were still in combat). A good temporary fix is to log out (to the character select screen) and log back in (which will fix it until the next time it happens).

Running speeds:

All speeds are capped at 33% OOC, only the biggest modifier is used, doesn’t stack

Speed Buffs:

  • “+100”% running speed in all cases: super speed -> adds a great amount always reaching speed cap (thus only really capped when chilled), adds actual +100% in combat!
    (engineer has quite some acces to this buff, thief while in stealth)
  • +33% speed, reduced when incombat -> Swiftness (max pact commander in city, or guild hall with guild hall upgrades)
  • +25% movement fixed buffs for charracters from either traits/runes/signets
    (available signet: warrior, elementalist, thief, ranger, chronomancer,engineer, revenant,necromancer. Not available to Dragonhunter or guardian, nor to mesmer)
  • +22% speed, buffs from reward tracks (e.g. pact commander in cities, or guild hall with guild hall upgrades)
  • +15% speed from banners
  • +11% speed running speed, buffs from reward tracks (e.g. pact commander in cities, or guild hall with guild hall upgrades)
  • (=0%) base running, normal running speed from base character

Negative modifiers:

  • -33% speed -> In combat (affecting running only) You’ll stay in combat until out of LOS/FoV (enemy) (or range (self), variable leash lines will make enemies follow you for a (short) distance causing in combat for longer duration. To avoid getting in combat: avoid getting hit or attacking yourself, dodges and aegis will help stay at max speed… if you hide in range sometimes you’ll stay in combat even tough the enemy retires from battle so when this happens you probably attacked yourself (willingly or unwillingly) and you have not moved out of range. (I tend to cause in combat myself with dmg on dodge on warrior or mark on dodge, or lingering effects like symbols (think stacking swiftness and an enemy walking into my symbol( whcih can hapen behind some walls as well….)
  • -33% speed -> Ichor (condition, from some undead drakes in Cursed shore mostly)
  • -50% speed -> Cripple condition
  • -66% speed -> Chill condition
  • -90% speed -> Quicksand (run through mystic forge for idea)…
23 lvl 80’s, 9 times map, 4ele, 4ncr, 3war, 3grd, 3rgr, 2thf, 2msm, 1eng, 1 rev.
Been There, Done That & Will do it again…except maybe world completion.
