Am I alone in feeling that some professions go with certain races than others? For example, a Norn Guardian sounds great to me, but just imagining an Asuran Guardian… * shudders * I would just like to know what Profession you guys think go with what races. Here’s my personal list so far, in no particular order:

Warrior: Charr, Norn, Human
Why: Warriors, to me, seem like they should be big, heavily muscled, ferocious etc. Sylvari and Asura don’t fit the bill. Charr seems to me like the ideal warrior, what with the claws, the fangs, Blood Legion, and the whole conquer the world thing.
Guardian: Charr, Norn, Human
Why: Pretty much, same as Warrior. I think Norn makes the ideal guardian because, well, I don’t know. They seem to me like the imposing tower of strength and armor that I feel a guardian should be.
Thief: Human, Sylvari, Asura, Charr
Why: Can you imagine a Norn trying to pickpocket? They’d get caught so fast… I’d say the same about the Charr, but they seem to have a whole legion that caters to thieves, so….
Mesmer: Human, Sylvari, Asura
Why: These three just seem like the most magical of the races to me. Asura seems cool, because of the whole “gremlin army” thing. Can you imagine arriving at a PvP fight and trying to click target the correct Asuran mesmer as a Norn?
Hunter: Human, Sylvari, Norn
Why: Humans and Sylvari seem the type to me, but Norns because of the whole “Great Hunt” thing. I can’t see an Asuran as one because some of the animals are bigger than they are.
Necromancer: Human, Sylvari, Norn, Asura
Why: Same as mesmer, but I put the Norn in because of all the NPC shamans they have. Necromancy seems like a shaman-y thing to me, I dunno.
Engineer: Charr, Human, Asura
Why: Charr because they have metal cities and even a whole legion that seems to cater to engineers, humans because they go with everything, Asurans because they are the smart ones and it seems logical that they woud build fancy gadgets. Not Norn because they seem primitive, and not Sylvari because they are tree huggers.
Elementalist: Human, Sylvari, Asura
Why: Same as mesmer.

I understand that you can be any profession as any race, so don’t troll. I just feel that some professions are geared towards some races more than others, and I wanted to get other opinions.

Professions are definitely not “geared” towards some races. You can be any race you want, and any profession you want. Sure, it may “feel” better to be a Human mesmer instead of a Charr mesmer, but does it really matter?

You are not alone, but that’s part of the charm of an Asuran Warrior that wields a toothpick. Or even a Charr Ranger that has a tiger as a pet!

Unfortunately since I only like Humans, Norn and Sylvari all my charicters fall into your catagories.

@Grimm: No, and that was why I put the disclaimer at the bottom. It doesn’t really matter and I just wanted opinions on what people think feel right.

Yes, actually, that’s why your “disclaimer” is useless.

This was a big problem for me before the game came out because whilst I never really role-play them I like my characters to fit the lore. I knew my main would be a human ranger and also planned to make a charr thief and sylvari elementalist. Then I hit a snag – I really wanted to play an engineer too, and a norn. I didn’t want those two to be seperate characters because 4 is already more than enough to keep up with, but they didn’t seem to fit together.

In the end I made it work by imagining a bunch of extra backstory. In short she is the world first(?) norn geek.
She’s a big girl, even for a norn, she could have been an excellent warrior except she never had the enthusiasm for rushing headlong into battle and lacked the coordination the profession requires. Alternatively she could have made a life for herself as a crafter because she was always fascinated by gadgets, but she’s too restless, too curious to stay in one place her whole life.

In the end she decided to throw tradition out the window, no matter what her parents (or the other norn) might think, combined her interests with some inspiration and maybe training from the charr and became an engineer.

I want to say that while some races might FEEL like they’re geared towards one class than another, this isn’t the case. The racial skills can sometimes be much weaker than a counter part.

I play a charr warrior and I found out one of the racial skills of a charr does the same thing as another warrior utility skill.

The Charr Roar (I don’t remember the name of the skill off the top of my head) is a much ‘weaker’ version of ‘For Great Justice’. It’s only weaker because I believe it doesn’t count as a shout and can’t be modified by traits and it lasts a couple seconds shorter than “FGJ”. Yes, the buffs could stack… but I think having two of the same utility skill is redundant when there’s so many other things I COULD get that would make my warrior more useful.

TL;DR. Yeah, the FEEL of races might be geared towards a class more than another, but generally the class skills are SO much better than racial skills.

When in Tyria, do as the Tyrian’s do.

This is a fun thread to read. I put a lot of effort into creating my characters, and I agree – there are some combinations that just feel natural. But unlike other MMOs where I usually will only play one or two races, I actually wanted to try every race in GW2. The story is just so fascinating and every culture so different.

Long story short, after making silvary ranger, asura thief, human elementalist and norn warrior (all seem like pretty generic combinations), I really wanted to try a mesmer, and the only race left to try was a charr. So I had to spend a long time trying to convince myself how it would work, but to be honest, it made that character so much more special and unique! And she looks awesome

Hmmmm. There are some races that don’t really seem to fit some professions, but I really think that it’s only certain archetypes, weapons, or builds within each profession that don’t really fit the race, not as much the profession as a whole.

For example:

Charr: I don’t think the majority of Guardian weapons would fit them. Namely, Staff, Scepter, and Focus. They seem to have too much of a magical bend to them that doesn’t really work for the Charr. Bows also seem like they wouldn’t fit the Charr that well, since their industrial nature seems like it would direct them more towards firearms than bows.

Charr thieves, though, I can see working simply because the profession covers several archetypes. It covers acrobatic fighters, pickpocketers, and assassins. I can definitely see the Charr going the more Assassin bit. Ever see a jungle cat stalking prey in the wild? I’m pretty sure Charr could pull it off.

Asura: Pretty much anything with a Warrior-esque bend to it doesn’t really seem to fit the Asura. They seem too magically/technically inclined to really legitimately charge into a battle with a Greatsword. Guardian I could see working, though, since the Staff, Scepter, Focus, and Torch weapons all fit the Asura pretty well.

Human: Yeah, humans are everything, always.

Norn: Pretty much everything but Engineer and possibly Mesmer fit. With the way they revere the mists and spirits and such, as well as being warriors, the magic classes just seem to work. Thieves actually work well with them ‘cause Norns are also hunters, so being stealthy is something that they’re completely capable of. Not so much pickpocketing and such, but sneaking up on prey shouldn’t be a big deal for them.

Sylvari: I can actually see them being pretty much everything, also, kind of like Humans. Engineer doesn’t seem to fit well at first, but if you look at all of the Alchemical stuff that Engineers get, having plant knowledge actually seems to fit that pretty well. I wouldn’t put it past seeing a Sylvari engineer toting around an Elixer gun and chucking potions everywhere. Seems more their style.

The Long Road
Goal: To have one character of every race, gender, and armor class combination at level 80.
Current progress: Human 4/6 | Charr 1/6 | Norn 1/6 | Sylvari 1/6 | Asura 1/6 | Total: 8/30
