A lot of people didn’t like how the legendary armor actually looks – trenchcoats among them – so I thought to myself ‘why not make a set of armor based on your profession?’

-The skins themselves could be an added collection unlocked after you complete a full set of legendary armor of a particular type (EG heavy, medium or light) which would require delving into what made you truly a master of your profession

I even thought of a skin type that might work.

Engineer legendary armor:

Out of combat: Outside of combat the armor looks more like a sci-fi spandex jumpsuit with small humble plates of electronic armor covering the basic areas of ones body, sans the head which would have a neat set of Deus Ex style sunglasses or a scouter type headwear

In combat: in a flash of smoke, electricity and holographic projection the engineers body is now covered in a sci-fi style Power Armor, evoking images of Master Chief, Samus Aran or even Iron Man including a visor with an effect of glowing in the dark and having a tiny animated hud visible or a target reticule, with small (dyeable) lights softly pulsing on the engineers armor throughout. (I imagine the GW2 development team could really go nuts and have fun with this now that they have the basic concept down.) Once combat was finished another flash of charged plasma and the engineer is once more in less menacing choice of wear.

With the armor i had the idea of the engineer advancing their skills to the point that they have exceeded the current limitations of technology – even by asuran standards – and applied their craft to creating a truly unique set of armor that shows their technological genius. The armor can even work well if separated into chunks as it would likely look like how Tony Stark sometimes has just part of his suit on.

This is, of course, just an idea I had. Do you have an idea of where to go with legendary armors? How would you design a legendary armor? Would you go with professions, elite specializations, something truly different?

It took them a really long time to get even these 3 skins out. Can you imagine how much longer it would take to get out at least 6 more skins (depending on whether these 3 are used for any specific class or not).

Agreed with Ori – this is not something they did over a weekend. What you’re looking for, while a great idea, will not happen any time soon.

Logistically, armour in general takes the Anet team long to create. Making 3 sets of transforming armour with minimal clipping took even longer. Now imagine class specific sets. It’s just not feasible unfortunately.

They gave each elite spec ONE piece of armour and ONE weapon, relevant to the elite spec. They never made full sets of armour for each elite spec.

I would love armour unique to each race/profession combination (there’s especially a lack of any viable armour that fits the engineer), but even if we stick with just a single set of armour for each profession, that’s still an unfeasible goal, however much it may appeal to me. Pushing that up to legendary though, they might as well put all that developer effort into other more important things. And this is something I really want. I don’t think it will happen, ever, but I’d be very excited if it did.

(also it’s worth pointing out that the new outfits styled from the members of Dragon’s Watch could be considered profession ‘armour’)

I know it didn’t take overnight or a weekend. however, i imagine why it might have taken so long was due to the fact they were also developing the capability and technology for it. since they’ve finished at least 3 sets now i imagine it will go a lot smoother than when they first started – enough that they can make such armors for the expansion after this next one, or even a little before. i’m not expecting it to be done quickly or even by the end of next year.

besides, no one answered the question. if it were up to you, how would you make legendary armor aesthetically?

(Edit: And i really don’t consider DW new looks to be ‘profession armor’ as it’s tailored to each member specifically. Not every guardian runs around in wolfblood outfits.)

But what does an engineer look like? Or any profession for that matter?

Here’s my engineer, looking like an almost polar opposite of what the OP described. My thinking behind her outfit was that she’d want something practical, something she could work in and that meant hard wearing leather but nothing too constricting or cumbersome. No bundles of gadgets strapped in odd places or clunky metal plates or chains.

Also she’s a norn and she learned engineering primarily from the charr so she learns more towards the steampunk style (sans actual steam, and goggles) than flashy asuran magitech. Of course magic does have a place in her work, this is Tyria after all, but it’s housed in sensible, durable kit and doens’t need a bunch of blinking lights to tell you it’s working – you can tell it’s working because the target is on fire or dead.

The heavy armor screams warrior’s theme. Passable on Guard but not Rev’s theme.
The medium armor is horrid. Period.
The light armor could be saved by animation. But butt cape is a big no. Theme wise, it will work on ele. Mesmer and necro can go cry in the corner.
It doesn’t really matter for me, since I don’t raid.

Thread topic wise, i think it would have been perfect to make legendary armors based on profession rather than armor class. But in order to do this, they would have needed to start far earlier than 2 years ago. It would take lots of resources. Indeed, if they didn’t make 2nd Gen Legendary weapons, they would have probably half way done by now.

There is one more theme that Anet should have considered if profession based was too much work. It would have been awesome, if the legendary armor was based on ‘Cultural Theme’. A thing that has been literally untouched since the beginning.

I think with profession or cultural based, there would have been probably no excuse to lock it behind raid. So every one in any type game mode can work towards and enjoy it. They’d just have to find another carrot for raider.

Regarding access to legendary armors, being locked in raid. I’m sorry to tell most ppl that has been complaining and envying about it that GW2 circa 2012 vision has long left us. Anet has literally drew the line in HoT expansion that they were heading to conventional mmorpg route. Sad truth, but seems lots of ppl still live in the nostalgia of 2012 promises.
It would have been literally insane and stupid if you thought that the upcoming expansion after HoT is going to be anywhere near the premise of original GW2 visions.

It would have been a huge project. If they didn’t go with raid content and 2nd gen legendary weapon in HoT, they could have pulled it off. The side effect would have been huge content drought.

I don’t see how they are going to balance the difficulty of obtaining it outside raid to be on par within raid. Without upsetting raiders that is.
They need carrot for raid and they have decided it as the carrot.
If you could obtain it outside, regardless how difficult. Raid participation will dip even further, being the least played game mode already.
That’s just the way it is … roll with it. Most of us won’t see those armors. This is what it feels like playing conventional mmorpg and not raid. GW2 is no longer mmorpg that seeks to be different.

Raiders do raids because they enjoy them because the rewards are decent etc. I doesnt have to be a matter of difficulty but also a matter of time investment (but i wouldnt mind doing a series of 100cm’s types of fractals or even harder to get it). Funnily enough id argue pvp has less ppl playing lol. I am ok with not getting that particullar set even tho id love to have the medium armor and the light one. Again im not suggesting the same thing in other parts im suggesting diff forms of it in diff parts so if you like that particular set this is the way to take it. Also wvw and pvp having legendary armor thats a huge incentive to play it long term. Same with fractals.

Raiders are usually associated with exclusivity, ie. high tier, end game gears. “Decent Rewards” won’t get many playing even with good game play mechanic due to the grinding nature of raid for it’s associated reward.
I was raider for years, not in this game though. Trust me, no one is going to grind over decent rewards.

How does wvw is going to have difficult nature beside time investment? running around with train, kill and flipping nodes.
Spvp with high rating, yes.

Fractal is the new dungeon, it’s not going to have an exclusive legendary armor set attached to it. I can see legendary trinkets on it though, like backpack.

Open world pve? what? kill 10,000,000 Mordrem Sniper?

Highly unlikely they are going to open up access to legendary armor for non raider.
They are for sure not going to come up with new seperate set anytime soon too.

why not? The end game goal for gw2 is basically get enough gold and raids are a good source of gold for once per weeb also there are unique skins which you cant get anywhere else titles etc

Raid is not only source of gold. Raiders are also required to consistently beat mechanic which deemed to be hard and challenging in a consistent basis. It takes lots of coordination, skills and massive time investment to be specific. Excluding ppl that cheat and buy run of course.
It would be hard to replicate that level of challenge outside raid.

U should give raids a shot because the majority of bosses arent hard. I could argue the bosses in saw in wing 1 were as hard the first time as doing 100 cm for the first time.

Yes, I know it’s nowhere near as hard as what i used to get back in wow (vanilla, tbc and wotlk) and rift days. Because i’ve tried it. I have some Li in my currency bags. Was invited by ingame pre-HoT fractal friends when i came back from post HoT rage quit hiatus. I was pretty much still rusty and sorta got carried jumping straight into it without looking/researching fights much. My mind wasn’t there, i couldn’t commit, sensory overload element of the game that i hated (reason i can’t get into pvp in this game) and one thing lead to another … I pretty much screw up. The rest is history.
I don’t find it enjoyable, may be it’s my age, high latency or I’m still rusty. I dunno, I hated VG @ beta and still do.
I one shotted 100CM with pug on first attempt. It’s not hard, yes.
I know it’s not as hard as it looks. But there is certainly a reasonable big gap between raid and anything outside.

True but difficulty isnt the only thing that deserves of the legendary armor its also time commitment wvw doesnt have a way to show if someone is the best of teh best nor do fractals but both can so whos spend countless hours in them. With that being said there are ppl that only do certain bosses each week namely the easiest ones in raids so they sure as hell dont deserve the armor any more than ppl who clear all the raids each time and yet they will get theirs. Yah I certainly understand the sentiment that ppl who cheat/shortcut doesn’t deserve it too. But it’s a weakness in term of game design that allow them to exploit it. Not to mention Anet put buying runs on grey area.

The CM, few months ago. 4-5 months may be, I didn’t keep count. I assume you asking this because it has been nerfed.
I stop playing not long after HoT came out, i couldn’t really help it. I get nausea every time I visit HoT maps. Even after I came back, I try to avoid those maps as much as i could. C’est la vie … I don’t like HoT expansion in general.

Its not a flawed design its a choice to do it slower but easier. Also well even wow had bought runs back in the day. And also since what i suggest is diff skins the fact that the raiding one is still the hardest to get still remains unchanged and it carries its value regardless of the number of diff legendary armors that specific one is the raiding one and that specific one is the hardest or one of the harder.

It took them a really long time to get even these 3 skins out. Can you imagine how much longer it would take to get out at least 6 more skins (depending on whether these 3 are used for any specific class or not).

You mean 24 more skins.
There are 3 armor types and 4 races so that’s 12 skins for legendary armor right now.
If they had to make it per profession then…
(9 professions) x (4 races) = 36 skins

A cool idea but way too many skins to make that happen…now perhaps if the skins weren’t profession locked and released over time, sure. You can even consider the current Legendary set the “Dragon Hunter” set, and next set (whenever that may be) could be the “Daredevil” set. But releasing them at the same time and/or being locked by profession is just ludicrous.

Personally, I’d prefer each legendary set have a more universal theme rather than profession theme…pick a type of theme and then build off of that…for example: Egyptian/Bandage theme could be a set that looks like you’re covered in various wraps and then when the armor is envoked, it forms metalic pieces at various parts of the body, jewlry/anklet/adornments for light, heavy wraps (basically bigger/looser bandage wraps) with hidden spikes/blades for medium and straight up gilded plate with glowing trim for heavy.

No, I meant 6 more armor sets, which would be 36 skins since its 6 skins per set. I just used skin by accident.

Yes, they would have to be made to fit the 4 different character rigs, but it would only be 6 more armor sets, only 36 more skins. Though it would be 144 more rigs/items or whatever to make.

Let’s see.
9 professions x 5 races x 2 for each sex =90 unique sets..
By 2067 we’d be nearing the completion of all the armour sets.
Talk about setting long term goals.

Edit.

-Win a pip,lose a pip,win a pip,lose a pip,lose a pip,
lose a pip,win 2 pips,lose a pip,lose a pip…………..-

Now the good thing about armor is that there are 6 pieces of it. Instead of doing the entire set based on professions or cultures, they can do single pieces based on those things. Like a human cultural helmet, and gauntlets for warriors for example.

Yannir for males. (guard,thief,war,ele)
Sonya for females. (necro,rev,ranger,mes,engi)
All classes lvl 80.

It took them forever to come put with legendary armor back when they first talked about it you want them to make 19999999 version of it ha welll wish for the moon cuz that would probalby happen long before your idea ever did
