Hey Folks,

I am a new player. I’ve been playing the game for a couple of weeks, and maybe 15 hours in total.

I must say, this is easily the most mature, helpful, and friendly online community that I have ever experienced in a game. Perhaps I am jaded from the childish bickering and selfish behaviour that populates most online gaming communites, but I have been blown away by my positive experience so far.

I am a newbie, so I have often found myself at a loss to understand a certain game mechanic, or having trouble with a quest. I’ve used the map chat on a few occasions and always recieved very helpful replies almost instantly.

Yesterday, I was having trouble defeating the skill point challenge boss near Maw in Wayfarer’s. I knew there were lots of people somewhat close by waiting for Maw to spawn, so I sent out a map chat asking if anyone would help out in killing the boss. Within 3 minutes, 5 or 6 people had come into the cave and helped me kill him. Then, within the next 10 minutes, I got 2 personal messages from lvl 80 characters asking if I still needed help with the boss. This makes the game so much more enjoyable to me.

Later, I found myself stuck on another skill challenge in the northern part of Wayfarer’s. It was a brain cramp moment, in that all I had to do was “commune” with the skill marker, and I was just standing too far away from it, but again I sent out a request, not for help, but just asking how to get the skill point since I’d already cleared the dungeon. Not only did 3 people respond helpfully (and not make fun of me for being dumb), but 2 other people actually fought their way into the dungeon to make sure that I got it figured out.

I just came from playing Diablo 3 for 2 months, where everybody is either making fun of you for the items you are trying to sell, or attempting to scam you in some way, and this is a huge breath of fresh air.

Other thoughts regarding the game:

Really fun overall experience. I’ve just been kind of working my way through the personal story, and exploring the first area (Wayfarer’s). Decided to get 100% completion on wayfarer’s before moving on, and I completed it last night. I found that to be a pretty rewarding experience. I don’t have tons of spare time to contribute to gaming, but I like that I can log in for 30 minutes and not feel like I am wasting my time.

The only negative for me so far is that I am running on a Mac, and I have the game crash on me at least once per day, and general performance is just ok.

Welcome – enjoy your stay.

I see that you are new to the forums – just be aware that the community is completely different from the forums and those from the game. Often you’ll see people here crying and complaining about everything – they’re just a vocal minority.

The in-game community consists of people who are actively playing and enjoying the game.

The gw2 subreddit is a valuable resource, you should check it out
http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/

Some other handy links:
gw2lfg.com (helpful for finding groups for story & dungeons)
guildwarstemple.com/dragontimer (helpful for event/dragon timers)
gw2stuff.com (an even better event/dragon timer which prevents griefing, but relatively new so not as much as a user base as the above)

If you need tips or a slot bag to help with you adventures, just add me Vol.5241

How does that new event timer website prevent griefing?

-You can block bad entries (they are logged by a modified IP), so most griefers today won’t be able to grief tomorrow if you flag them yourself
-You can see the times that are marked as good. If there are several, chances are it’s the right time

It was probably the first thing that I liked about this game, is that they made it easy so be friendly, how many time have I been happy to see someone come and attack the boss I was trying to kill, that only happen in GW2, or when I am farming and I see someone come along, we don’t even need to be in a party, we just play together.

And also it’s probably the first game I play that when someone ask for help in Map chat, people actually try to help instead of bashing.

Hey Dubey welcome to GW2.

Yeah I have to say I left Tera for GW2 and the 2 communities are so totally different. Tera the vocal community are the dregs of the earth and it was a breath of fresh air to come to GW2 and get such friendly and helpful responses.

welcome. welcome. yeah in-game we joke around and have fun. the forums have a lot of complainers. in game you can just ignore them easily. arena net busted out the ban-hammer for cheaters and trolls. sometimes they will get banned and then complain about the ban, then arenanet will show the chat log where they were racist or hating.
so coming from D3, or even other mmos.. you dont HAVE TO 100% a map… some of the hearts are boring.

“hey jotun…look there is a rabbit about 10 meters away. you can easily go get it yourself… oh you cant be bothered..fine ill get it for you. "

uhm if finishing off a ma kitten lowing down your fun, then have fun. you will not explore the whole map if you only do the personal story. i find it fun when im gathering resources in a part of the map that seems isolated, and then…. a player runs by me being chased by something. i ask them if they need help with something. the pick up groups are fun.
