Ok, is this the norm or have I finally won at the RNG.

So i got 8 Shadow dyes from the 15. Umm, did i just hit the lottery? I’ve never done well with anything RNG related to this game before.

I knew it was too good to be true.

11.8% chance.

2 sigma range (~95%) with 15 packs is 3-9.

I had 7 dyes in 3 packs. 2 of them being Abyss.

It’s not that ridiculous of a chance, unlike what people say.

I purchased 3 sets of 5 dye packs for a total of 15. Out of that I got only 2 Shadow dyes, Orange and Turquoise and that was from the first set of 5. The second set gave me a mix of common and uncommon (blue and green quality). The last set of 5 packs gave me all common (blue quality) dyes. I’m not too happy about that last set.

I’ll just buy the ones off of the TP. I need green for my Necro so no big deal :-) Are they only temporary or will they stay in the shop?

The only thing special here is the fact that Abyss ( and the others in lesser way) is quite pricy on TP right now…and players are responsible for that (economy rules)
If hypothetically speaking all Shadow Dyes were only worth around 50 s, almost no-one would complain I think

Real life example..I would LOVE to get 5 uncommon dyes..as long as they are “gold”
So, getting the rares isn’t that special…getting the valuable ones is

Dye packs are always temporary.

I bought 5 last night. (I just happened to have 500 gems, so I figured why not). I got a Shadow Orange, which actually ain’t bad.

OK, so normally dye packs have 25 total dyes, only 5 of which are ‘new.’.

Drops are weighted slightly towards common and uncommon, so the chance for a new, rare, dye ends up being somewhere between 10-20%

I noticed that these new Shadow Dye packs have many more than 5 ‘new’ dyes. As such, they represent much better value than any previous dye pack.

There are 10 new ones, not 5.

Well, if you don’t want it, I’d love that Abyss

Not a fan of the shadow dyes at all, but congrats on getting The Blackest Black Yet. You can probably fetch some nice money on the auction house with that, as people seem eager to remove the texture from their armour.

Shadow Green and Shadow Violet (and maybe Shadow Abyss) are the only ones that interested me so I went out and bought Green and Violet from the auction house. There really are no other colors quite like those two in the current catalog and I had been going through all the colors trying to find a deep dark violet recently so this appearing just felt like fate.

I got 8 dyes in my first 20 opened, 0 in my next 5, then I stopped. Just one Shadow Abyss, my only duplicate was Shadow Magenta.

From map chat comments and my guildies’ experiences, it does seem generally more likely you’ll get at least one good one in a set of five than has been true for earlier specialty RNG dye packs.

In fact, thanks to my luck with having Abyss drop, I was able to get my missing dyes off the TP and this is the very first specialty dye set where I have them all. For what it’s worth, I suppose, since most of them will just look black to anyone watching me run by.

On the right materials the color variants are decidedly not black.

However, I don’t expect everyone to be running max graphics or eyeballing me up close, and the tints are subtle enough that seeing someone run by you won’t give much opportunity to notice “oooh, what lovely hints of purple.”

OP’s an anet employee trying to get you all to purchase the dye packs hoping you’ll get the same luck as he apparently did.

I wanted Shadow Orange and it was super pooper cheap on TP so I didn’t need to RNG.

Gaile, these dyes aren’t shadow! They are pure doom. There, a new naming convention for future DARKER dyes: Doom. Can’t wait for Pink Doom, or Shylac Doom.

Bought two 5 packs yesterday. Not one shadow dye in the first. Second pack: Every single dye was a Shadow dye! The statistical probabilty of that happening must be so very, very tiny it boggles the mind. No abyss though, but I’m not complaining. Not at all.

Based on these anecdotal accounts the data is pointing closer to a 1 to 1 relationship between the chances of a shadow dye and a normal dye, giving a 40% chance of getting any shadow dye per pack.

So is getting the dye about getting the dye or is it about hopefully making more gold back than you spent on gems and turning a profit-i.e. gambling-?

For me it was getting the dye. So I have bound all the Shadow dyes to my account, including several TP bought (I’m around 100 g down now) and sold my only duplicate since my guildie who wanted it got it from her own packs so I didn’t need to give it to her. I was hoping for a second Shadow Abyss to sell, but when I got a 5 pack with no shadow dyes in it at all I elected not to drop further cash on the chance.

I only want Abyss, so if I go for one of these packs, which I’m tempted to give it a go at this point, it would be for that, either to get Abyss, or to sell whatever I did get to better afford Abyss

But if you are going for Abyss you only have a 1/25 chance. Even if you buy a 25 pack for 2500 gems, there is a 36% of not getting it. A 5 pack is an 81.5% chance of not getting it.

Something is not right. It’s a bit odd that I got 5 of the same in a row of the shadow dyes.

When someone wins big while gambling, why do we say, “you did well”? What exactly did they do? Its not like the next person that buys the same amount of dye packs and gets next to nothing did any more or less than the first one. I just don’t fully understand the praise for successful gambling.

Apparently, “You did well” is translated “You got lucky! Congrats!”

Or maybe it’s translated, “You did well for buying no less than 15 dye packs! Thanks for the revenue!”

I have a 4% chance of getting it, I know that and expect not to get it. I just hope I do get some Shadow dyes that I can sell toward buying it. That’s all.

Got 3 packs and got nothing. Guess to the “no more buying gems with real money” now I will add the “no more buying ANY RNG” from now on.

Well you have a 21.6 percent chance getting no Shadow dyes with 3.

That is the best choice, if you’re not willing to put in an investment toward your gambling. You were never guaranteed anything as indicated by all the statements where people bought 5 and still didn’t get anything.

Four it the minimum you needed to have a better than average chance of getting at least one, but even if you bought one right now you still have a less than 50% chance of getting one at all.

If you can’t accept the possibility of getting nothing for your efforts you should not gamble. So you are making the right choice.

Its a combination of both. I will make more gold selling the dyes then straight conversion from Gems to Gold. However, I’m not sure I want to part with these dyes. This is the first set in awhile I was willing to purchase with some Gems.

Decided to give another pack a try….another Shadow Dye! Turquoise this time; it looks really nice on my Heavy Carapace Armor.

Seems like Lady Luck is more generous with this batch of special dyes. =)
