Hi guys,
My friend purchased the GW2 Base game like a month or two before it became free, is there anything he will get now that it became free? Like gems or a reduced price in HoT?

Nope, he can just play the core game without the restrictions of the free to play accounts, but that’s it. No discount on HoT.

The free to play is actually an extended trial version with restriction so new people can get in to see if they want to buy. It’s not a full account like a paid for account. For example, you can’t go into Lions Arch until level 35 or talk in map chat.

He will get the out fit but he also got access to the game for 2 months before it went F2P. He will also get another character slot if he chooses to upgrade to HoT.

The core game has not been available to purchase since June 16th and the release of the pre-purchase edition of HoT, at least not officially.

If he purchased between Jan 23rd and Jun 16th, then he could have got a refund and pre-purchased HoT instead. He might find that if he purchased the game from ANet directly during this period of time, that they still might give him a refund on his core purchase if he buys HoT (they might not though, he should contact customer support to find out).

If he purchased it before Jan 23rd, then it wasn’t exactly ‘recent’, but he ought to have received the Heroic Edition items and the Royal Guard Outfit, which people who purchase the game now don’t get

I got my money back , but i had to asked anet for it , they give a few time before expansion for everyone who bought the game between the announcement of the expansion and the release of it , seems that the time for that has expired.

that was 31/6 that offer expierd but it dont hurts to try if you were eligable for it.

Most importantly IMO he gets an account which isn’t crippled by all the restrictions on free to play ones.

He can talk in map chat, make more than 2 characters with more than 3 bags each without paying extra, leave starter zones before level 10 and enter Lion’s Arch before level 35, receive daily login rewards, trade all items, exchange gems for gold, access the guild bank and do various other things which free accounts can’t do unless they purchase the game.

Went away for a few months. Wondered where that outfit came from. I used it on my Asura Revenant before she had exotics I will willing to use transmog on – and kept wondering what I’d done to get it that I couldn’t remember…

It looks really nice on an Asura too.
