I’m sure this has been mentioned several times before, but quickly skimming through the forums I couldn’t find a recent topic about this.

Why are PvP League icons permanently visible outside of PvP?

I usually have player names displayed at all times, because it helps me keep track of others, especially during PvE and WvW. While these icons are only somewhat distracting, they bother me because they are pretty much pointless outside of that realm. They have no place in PvE and WvW, and it makes zero sense that these icons are attached to a player’s name and cannot be hidden.

May I suggest either:

  • Give us the option to hide them, but still be able to see names.
  • Get rid of PvP League icons outside of PvP maps.
  • Move the icons to a location that is only visible when the character is selected, similar to how map complete and mastery rank are displayed.

And why are they a problem? You could always select hid nameplates in the options menu.

Considering they are tiny, why are they really that big of an issue?

People who get the higher tiers should be proud. Actually, anyone who can get to a rank they feel they did well to get to should feel proud.

I just said, I display nameplates to see where players are for personal reasons related to my own game play…

…it helps me keep track of others, especially during PvE and WvW.

Sometimes in WvW, it is beneficial to me to have nameplates displayed so I can tell the difference between friend and foe.

They’re not necessary, and they’re not seriously hurting anyone.

They’re a problem for some people because they’re visual clutter they would rather not see. They’re useful because they encourage people by letting them show off, and by raising awareness of the PvP league.

There are pros and cons to them that get weighed against each other. Whether they’re currently at a good balance is a matter of opinion, but if you’re coming at it from a perspective of “Is it NECESSARY?” then you’re not going to get a satisfying answer.

I agree with this:

  • They aren’t “necessary”
  • They increase clutter substantially.
  • They are part of e-bragging, which is part of MMOs traditionally.

I’d prefer not to see them at all (even in PvP), but it doesn’t ruin my game to see all the kitten.

Because they want players to play pvp. One of the best ways to get players to play a particular game mode is to give them some sort of prestige. You know if you see a legendary player they are: currently active and a great player. Don’t complain because you yourself don’t have one.

I was agreeing with your assessment, up until that last sentence. Some people sincerely dislike clutter, like people who want to turn off Personal Story and Living World text in the upper corner. It’s not necessarily a question of insecurity, and when you make it personal like that, you’re not helping anyone.

Personal opinion. I see nothing wrong with them. It’s not like they are in your face. Next thing you know you’ll want mastery points hidden or titles. Really if you don’t like them disable name plates, if you must have them on, live with it. I wish I could turn of the stupidity that people say in map chat, but sadly I need to know when events are up and if people are needed in different lains ect.

While I acknowledge that you are offering a valid solution, it still doesn’t answer my question of why they are necessary outside of PvP. Also, mastery rank is already hidden unless you mouse over the character, whereas PvP rank is always visible.

Yes, I can turn off nameplates, but that is not the point I am getting at. I use nameplates to coordinate myself in certain situations, and having them turned off can affect how well I play in those situations. The extra clutter is not appropriate, and quite frankly, it does annoy me.

I’m not asking that the icons be totally abolished. I’m merely asking politely to have the option to hide them for myself. I honestly don’t see the problem in making a suggestion…

As far as I’m concerned they are achievements no different to a PvE player wearing his fancy titles and fancy gear with shiny legendaries leaving unnecessary particle effects everywhere.

It’s just a tiny badge next to the name.

I mostly play for the new Free-For-All arena in PvP lobby.

imo

Anet is pushing PvP and esports and is using these emblems as a form of ingame advertising. (If you notice, Masteries are only in PvE and even there they don’t show up unless you mouse over the player and WvW enemy ranks are only in WvW. The PvP icon show up outside of PvP in both PvE and WvW and appears without mousing over the players.) Since they are used for advertising ingame then ANet isn’t going to turn them off or give an option to turn them off.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

We can apply that logic to player titles, weapons, wings, pve icons etc etc etc…

Don’t expect it to change. Those emblems simply serve as the bragging rights that any dysfunctional gaming community need in order to feel that they have value.

It is good to have a pro league and its good to have leaderboards ans stuff like that, but the second you add a rating system, elitism and insults ruin the game for the majority of the players. And the little symbols are the way people judge you as worthy or not… gfg.
