I used to really be into WvW until the map change, though I started jumping back into it since they brought some of the old maps back.

After I took a leave of WvW, I really got into PvP a lot more. Since trying out WvW again, it’s been frustrating — since I’ve noticed I’m not competitive in WvW anymore, the only thing I can think of is I’m terribly outgeared.

Reason I say this is in PvP I hold my old, usually get my share of kills, and in unrated matches probably run a bit >50% wins, which seems about right. When I hit WvW now, it’s almost like insta death now, especially with any caster/cloth classes. The only real difference I can see is gear, since PvP levels the field on gear/stats.

Most of my characters are in exotics, honestly, I just don’t have the time needed to get ascended/legendary. I’m curious for those who WvW a lot, what kind of gear do you have.

They’re just different game modes, PvP basically has a damage cap anf through a huge variety of sources you can get way more damage in WvW. You just need to plan for it. Even if ascended gear was removed you’d still have people spiking you for fatal amounts.

Since you’re posting here, you own the game. Since you own the game, you get login rewards, which include laurels. Since you get laurels, you can get Ascended Rings and Amulets (and Accessories with 50 Ecto per). Ascended trinkets make up most of the stat difference over exotics. I do fine in WvW with only Asc. trinkets, unless:

  1. Up against a better build
  2. Up against greater skill
  3. Outnumbered
  1. Since HoT launched, I’ve seen a lot of Elite Spec skills in use. While I’m dubious they’re as insanely OP as some are claiming, they are certainly in heavy use, and some of them are either more effective or at least counters to them are not as well known, yet.
  2. I have no idea if the average skill range in unranked PvP is lower than that in WvW, though I suspect that the better PvP players are playing in ranked, thus (perhaps) truncating the skill range.
  3. Quantity has a quality all its own.

WvW is also a sandbox mode. PvP achieves complexity by being heavily regulated, WvW lets you do anything. If you want to make a group stealth thief and run in a party with 4 rifle berserkers using all 3 types of consumables and full ascended glass gear, and 1 hit kill entire groups coming out of spawn, that’s fair game.

While I am quite new to WvW, what i’ve seen seems to be more an emphasis on builds and coordination. In sPvP everyone is effectively even and it’s about using your skills and the small environment. Because this environment doesn’t shift drastically from match to match the builds can stay fairly stagnant (not accounting for those at higher levels of play of course) Whereas in WvW you can either be a jack of all trades and do okay everywhere but nothing special. Or you can choose to spec for a specific role.

I would say look at how you like to play in WvW then look at some popular meta builds currently out there to get you started. Once you’ve built yourself in a particular area be conscious of the fact if you go into a fight that your build isn’t suited for you will be melted. It’s actually one of the more rewarding aspects to the game that I’ve found so far, you will see some insanely talented players on the field that really know their stuff.

As an aside for the ascended, you don’t really need to focus on making Elonian, Damask, or Deldrimor ingots every single day. Just take the time to craft your time gated bit and then once every few days or so spend some time farming and craft them up in bulk then forget about them again. After awhile you’ll find you have plenty of mats to craft a piece of gear then start the process over. It makes ascending your gear a lot less painful and doesn’t require a massive farming commitment.

All Ascended jewellery is available very cheaply if you have a guild.

Weapons/armor don’t make that much difference, unless you are fighting 1v1. Even then skill can more than make up the difference.

A much bigger issue is imbalance between professions. Rangers are still very strong in PvE but weak in solo WvW/PvP.

What? No. Rangers are one of — if not the best — 1v1 classes in the game and have been for 4 years. It was in group combat that ranger slows down, but druid helped with that.

Thats why i never able to enjoy WvW, i don’t like the idea of maintaining food/utility buff, all BIS gear in order to be competitive to another player.

PvP aspect imo should always provide equality and balanced gear in order to promote the player skill level differences. Although it is still fun to steal camp, cut off supplies, making chaos and avoid enemy players in WvW to me.
